Effect of tensile axial loading on seismic performance (plastic shear deformation) of a laminated rubber bearing (LRB) was clarified. Cyclic loading tests were carried out to evaluate the relation between lateral force and lateral displacement of the LRB under seismic conditions (i.e., axial loading) and under worn conditions (i.e., 300 cycles). A strain measurement scheme based on image analysis was used to obtain the local strain fields of the LRB. Localized strain fields under tensile axial loading occurred more markedly at the corners of the free surface of the LRB than those under compressive axial loading. The seismic performance of the LRB under tensile or compressive axial loading was degraded severely after shear deformation incurred during 300 cycles. After 300 cycles, for the LRB under compressive axial loading, large localized shear strain fields occurred at the rubber layers underneath and on the inner steel plates, whereas, for the LRB under tensile axial loading, such large strain fields occurred at the rubber layers around the upper and lower steel plates. © 2005 EUCENTRE. Cooperative driving technology with aid of inter-vehicle communication attracts increasing interests recently. Under cooperative driving guidance, motion of individual, vehicles can be conducted in a more safe and smooth manner. In this paper, cooperative driving at blind crossing (crossing without traffic lights) is studied. A concept named "safe driving patterns" is proposed to represent collision free movements of all encountered vehicles at crossings. The algorithm to determine a "safe driving pattern" is presented, too. The solution space of all allowable movement schedules is then described by a spanning tree in terms of safe driving patterns. Moreover, the corresponding trajectory planning technique considering lane changing around crossings is also discussed.

Micro topographic feature was obtained by laser holographic fabrication on the photoresponsive polymer. Surface feature was localized using photomask for developing two dimensional cellular pattering. Fibroblast cells were cultured and proliferated only on the patterned substrate. Obtained cellular pattering suggests that the laser fabricating with photoresponsive polymer would be applied to regenerating new tissue and developing biomedical device of living cells. © 2005 IEEE.

The development of the World Wide Web (or Internet) has provided the ability to connect the entire world together. Thousands of web servers located around the world allow users to connect and communicate with one another. Additionally, a huge transaction based product sales business has evolved, via the Internet. For many, the next generation of the Internet needs to focus on collections of servers and users working collectively together to solve problems. Grids and the Global Information Grid (GIG) are terms associated with enabling technologies that provide the framework for collections of servers and users to work together. Network Centric Operations and/or Network Centric Warfare are terms that refer to the actual concepts, applications, and processes that will execute on the GIG and solve real world problems. Moving to this "next generation Internet" provides many exciting opportunities as well as many difficult challenges. This year's panel will explore these opportunities and challenges from several different perspectives: government, defense industry, commercial industry and academia.

The flutter and limit cycle oscillation(LCO) behavior of a 45 degree delta wing-store model, with various store spanwise locations, is studied using an aeroelastic model which includes a high fidelity, nonlinear finite element structural solver and a vortex lattice aerodynamic model. The store aerodynamics are modeled using slender body theory. The computed results are compared to a previous computational model and to experiment. The zero angle of attack flutter behavior of the wing-store configuration is shown to be sensitive to the spanwise store location. This is predicted accurately using the current methodology. LCO results for zero angle of attack are computed for two store spanwise locations and compare favorably with experiment. For a clean wring configuration and a configuration which had the store located at y/c = .291, the flutter results show very little sensitivity to the model angle of attack. This too was predicted accurately using the current model. However when the store is placed at y/c = .545, the experimental flutter data show a large sensitivity to angle of attack with the flutter velocity decreasing by almost 20% when the model is placed at an angle of attack of two degrees. This is not predicted in the current work and it is possible that unmodeled flow physics such as leading edge vortices are the cause of this difference.

The "global" and the "local" in knowledge management

Purpose - This paper aims to unravel the complexities associated with knowledge sharing in large global organizations through a field study carried out in a large, multinational company (Du Pont), focusing on the critical issues, concrete practices, bottle-necks, and constraints in knowledge sharing. The tension between "local" production of much of the knowledge and its globalizing is specifically addressed. Design/methodology/approach - Qualitative analysis based on a detailed case study of the knowledge-sharing practices in two business units, two functional areas (R&D and engineering project management) in four countries. Findings - Focus on certain types of organizational knowledge to the exclusion of others can be counter-productive. Knowledge management (KM) systems need to be integrative and flexible enough to facilitate the dynamic interplay between different forms of knowledge across the space and time. research limitations/implications - The results of a case study are somewhat limited in terms of their generalizablity. Practical implications - The insights from the study offer useful guidelines for designing systems and processes for sharing and managing knowledge in large, diversified organizations. Originality/value - Most field-based investigations into knowledge management tend to focus on specific KM projects. This is one of the few comprehensive studies that analyzed knowledge-sharing practices and constraints at both local and global level in large organizations. It elucidates the key facilitators and inhibitors of knowledge sharing in such organizations.

The objective of this research is to develop a wearable power assist device which helps a person to lift up a heavy object. The device is designed to support him by holding his upper body weight and reducing his inner force. It turns to the reduction of a compression force of his lower back discs, which is a major factor of a lower back injury. In a lifting-up motion, he twists and bends his body, which means three-dimensional motion analysis is necessary for the compression force analysis. However, most of related works on the compression force analysis have been carried out in a vertical plane. For understanding the characteristics of a lifting-up motion better, this paper presents three-dimensional analysis of it. Using a motion capture system, we measured a sequence of body positions with and without the power assist device in different object location and mass, as well as surface EMG (electro-myogram) signals. The compression force of the lower back discs is estimated by a three-dimensional biomechanical human body model utilizing the position data. The results show that the range of the twist angle of his body is about 30 degree in maximum and the compression force increases about 10% due to the twist angle. With respect to the effect of the power assist device, the magnitude of the surface EMG signals of spine muscles is decreased when wearing the power assist device. It means the proposed power assist device gives a good support to him.

A model-based approach to adaptive control of chaos in non-linear chaotic discrete time systems is presented. In the case of unknown or time varying chaotic plants, the Lyapunov exponents may vary during the plant operation. In this paper, an effective adaptive strategy is proposed for on-line identification of Lyapunov exponents. The control aim is that the plant output changes in accordance with the output of the linear desired model. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

A new approach to adaptive control of chaos in non-linear discrete time systems with delayed state feedback is presented. In the case of unknown or time varying chaotic plants, the Lyapunov exponents may vary during the plant operation. In this paper, Lyapunov exponents are used to select the controller gain. An effective adaptive strategy for on-line identification of Lyapunov exponents is proposed. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Neural networks, including support vector machines (SVMs), and principal component analysis (PCA) etc., and their applications have received increasing attentions from many fields such as information processing and systems control. In this paper, we study some useful features of the neural networks, support vector machines and principal component analysis, and apply these methods to the information processing, localization and navigation problems of mobile robots on the basis of the information acquired with multiple sensors, such as visual, ultrasonic and infrared sensors. A Hopfield-type neural network scheme is proposed for real-time optimization and navigation applications. To recognize the doorplate numbers and human faces, support vector machine is proposed for the vision system of the mobile robot. The principal component analysis network is used to process the data acquired by the ultrasonic and infrared sensors to obtain the location and orientation information of the robot. The principal component network can also give feasible directions for movements. © 2005 IEEE.
