Impact of Building Design and Operating Strategies on Urban Heat Island Effects Part II: Sensitivity Analysis

This study investigates the mutual thermal interactions between buildings and the microclimate within urban area centers. Buildings are the primary energy consumers in cities, and one of the main causes of the urban heat island (UHI) formation. In this article, a flexible simulation environment is developed and used to model the mutual thermal interactions between building energy systems and their urban surroundings in Phoenix, AZ, characterized by its hot climate. The impacts of various operating strategies for both commercial and residential buildings are assessed on both UHI effects and energy consumption. Specifically, the study evaluates the impacts of indoor temperature settings, precooling strategies, and air infiltration/exfiltration rates. It has been found that heat rejected by air conditioning systems significantly impacts UHI formation in urban centers located in hot climates. Specifically, commercial buildings were found to cause more UHI effects than residential buildings due to higher cooling loads. The impacts of heat rejected from heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are found to be more dominant than that from air exfiltration on the microclimate of urban centers. For urban center made up of commercial buildings with a street aspect ratio of 2, heat from air exfiltration is estimated to be as low as 10% of the heat rejected by HVAC systems. Balancing electron transfer and intermediate adsorption ability of bifunctional catalysts via tailoring electronic structures is crucial for green hydrogen production,while it still remains challenging due to lacking efficient ***,one efficient and universal strategy is developed to greatly regulate electronic structures of the metallic Ni-Fe-P catalysts via in-situ introducing the rare earth(RE)atoms(Ni-Fe-RE-P,RE=La,Ce,Pr,and Nd).Accordingly,the as-prepared optimal Ni-Fe-Ce-P/CC self-supported bifunctional electrodes exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity and excellent stability with the low overpotentials of 247 and 331 mV at 100 mA cm^(-2) for HER and OER,*** the assembled electrolyzer,the Ni-Fe-Ce-P/CC as bifunctional electrodes displayed low operation potential of 1.49 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^(-2),and the catalytic performance can be maintained for 100 *** results combined with density functional theory(DFT)calculation reveal that Ce doping leads to electron decentralization and crystal structure distortion,which can tailor the band structures and d-band center of Ni-Fe-P,further increasing conductivity and optimizing intermediate adsorption *** work not only proposes a valuable strategy to regulate the electron transfer and intermediate adsorption of electrocatalysts via RE atoms doping,but also provides a deep under-standing of regulation mechanism of metallic electrocatalysts for enhanced water splitting.

Time-varying formation-containment control for heterogeneous multi-agent systems with communication and output delays via observer-based feedback protocol

In this article, the time-varying formation-containment control problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MASs) with an observer-based state feedback protocol is studied, where both communication delays and output delays are taken into consideration. By introducing an augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals (LKFs) candidate and employing less conservative methods to estimate its derivative, an improved quasi-formation-containment criterion is derived. On this basis, some observers and controllers are designed to allow for a larger maximum upper bound (MUB) of time delays on the premise of guaranteeing the fulfillment of the time-varying formation of leaders and the bounded convergence of followers. The estimation of the MUB determines the allowable delay range for system stability under the designed observers and controllers. Moreover, a distributed algorithm is developed to calculate the MUB of time delays, the observer gains, and the controller gains. Finally, two simulation experiments are implemented to demonstrate the obtained results, which verify the superiority and practicability of the criterion and algorithm. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

This study centers its attention on communication among ALS patients with severe symptoms, which is essential to daily life and the part that remains a difficulty. Also, communication is important to promote social participation and ability of independence. To promote social participation and improve the ability of independence without the restrictions for patients, the purpose of this study is to develop a wearable interface that enables communication based on the patient's voluntary intent, without temporal, spatial, or physical restrictions, and to confirm the feasibility of intention transmission using a new text entry algorithm. The developed interface utilized a see-through type head-mounted display (HMD) with a gaze estimation sensor to enable patients themselves to transition between cyberspace and physical space and to communicate by the system without restrictions of posture or usage environment during daily life activities. The letter selection is triggered by a change in the direction of the gaze trajectory. This method of letter selection reduces the burden on the user by avoiding the effects of dwell time and other factors associated with gazing input. The key layout for text input UI considers the characteristics of human eye movements, to minimize key selection errors and allows for quick viewpoint movement. To confirm the feasibility of the basic performance, we conducted the experiment with three able-bodied participants using the developed system and a conventional system as a comparison system, respectively. As a result, the developed system was able to input sentences in the same amount of time as the conventional system. The results show that the developed system has the basic performance of a communication interface with a new character input method based on eye movement functions. Therefore, we confirmed the feasibility of transmitting intention using a new text entry algorithm to enable communication without the restrictions. © 2024 IEEE.

Non-Bayesian social learning enables multiple agents to conduct networked signal and information processing through observing environmental signals and information aggregating. Traditional non-Bayesian social learning models only consider single signals, limiting their applications in scenarios where multiple viewpoints of information are available. In this work, we exploit, in the information aggregation step, the independently learned results from observations taken from multiple viewpoints and propose a novel non-Bayesian social learning model for scenarios with multiview observations. We prove the convergence of the model under traditional assumptions and provide convergence conditions for the algorithm in the presence of misleading signals. Through theoretical analyses and numerical experiments, we validate the strong reliability and robustness of the proposed algorithm, showcasing its potential for real-world applications. © 2024 IEEE.
