Proposes a method for data clustering in a n-dimensional space using the elastic net algorithm which is a variant of the Kohonen topographic map learning algorithm. The elastic net algorithm is a mechanical metaphor in which an elastic ring is attracted by points in a bi-dimensional space while their internal elastic forces try to shun the elastic expansion. The different weights associated with these two kinds of forces lead the elastic to a gradual expansion in the direction of the bi-dimensional points. In this method, the elastic net algorithm is employed with the help of a heuristic framework that improves its performance for application in the n-dimensional space of cluster analysis. Tests were made with two types of data sets: (1) simulated data sets with up to 1000 points randomly generated in groups linearly separable with up to dimension 10 and (2) the Fisher Iris Plant database, a well-known database referred to in the pattern recognition literature. The advantages of the method presented are its simplicity, its fast and stable convergence, beyond efficiency in cluster analysis.

In this paper, we propose and discuss about some communication layers of conversation analogous to that of computer networks. The layers relate to understanding levels of participants of the conversation whether among artificial or human agents. Human beings control the layers to perform efficient and correct communication. To control the layers, it is necessary to get discrimination of them from receiver's behaviors and to make selection of responses. Some analysis about these problems are given based on the proposed communication model. Furthermore, efficiency and ease of communication are considered from the viewpoint of communication layers.

A number of neural network models and training procedures for time series prediction have been proposed in the technical literature. These models typically used uni-directional computation flow or its modifications. In this study a novel concept of bi-directional computation style is proposed and applied to prediction tasks. Since the coupling effects between the future prediction system and the past prediction system help the proposed model improve its performance, it is found that the prediction score is better than with the traditional uni-directional method. The bi-directional predicting architecture has been found to perform better than the conventional one when tested with standard benchmark sunspots data.

In this paper, we extend the language we proposed in [11] to make it possible to program arc-consistency algorithms. We also propose a hybrid algorithm that integrates the interval-consistency (IC) and arc-consistency (AC) algorithms. For a constraint, the algorithm checks IC when it is non-binary and checks AC when the constraint turns into binary. The algorithm is well-balanced. Its reduction cost is close to the IC checking algorithm, while its reduction power is close to the AC checking algorithm for most problems. The experimental results show that the hybrid algorithm may be a little slower than the IC checking algorithm for programs that do not require strong reduction power, but may be an order of magnitude faster than IC for other programs.

The dynamics of international military operations and commitments, coupled with accelerating information technologies, can lead to confusion and uncertainty Customary rules recommend caution, even stopping, when confusion and uncertainty are present, yet the needed changes counsel toward accelerated efforts. Currently, systemsengineering does not completely address delivering "operational war fighting capabilities," or foster commanders' confidence to fully exploit those capabilities upon delivery. Acquisition reform supports accelerating delivery of systems. likewise, accelerated delivery of "war fighting capabilities" within any opponents' fielding and deployment cycle is imperative. Technical advances in modeling and simulation, utilization concepts, and innovative evaluation methods create an opportunity to facilitate codevelopment of doctrine, operations, and training prior to producing hardware systems. On-line simulation and evaluation tools can overcome the need for physical systems. Specifically, this paper lays out the opportunity to evolve systemsengineering to another level, operational engineering, which leverages from the modeling and simulation environment, prior to hardware production. That modeling and simulation paired with coevolution of procedures and on-line analysis will produce a trained customer base, fully prepared for deliveries of "operational war fighting capabilities".

We propose an adaptive regularization algorithm for smoothing dense range images using a novel, first order stabilizing function. The stabilizer we suggest is based upon minimizing the reconstructed surface area and is derived in the native, spherical coordinate system of the range scanner. This allows adjustments to be made along only the direction of measurement, thereby preventing the data overlapping problem that can arise in dense images. Adaptation is achieved by adjusting the regularization parameter according to the results of 2D edge analysis. Results indicate effective noise suppression along with well preserved edges and details in the reconstructed, 3D surfaces.
