The Qualitative Simulation Graph Methodology (QSGM) is a general purpose qualitative discrete event simulation (QDES) framework, well suited to address the PERT scheduling with resources problem. The coverage property of QSGM has two important implications for the PERT scheduling problem. First, it means that all possible schedules are represented. Second, it means that, as long as the delay time intervals are not violated, we can characterize all possible outcomes of a decision that needs to be made in the schedule. This gives rise to the possibility of robust point-in-time scheduling decisions without needing to rerun the simulation in order to get the results.

The problem of robust H ∞ filter design for uncertain continuous-time linear systems with multiple time-delayed states is addressed in this paper. The uncertainties are assumed to belong to convex bounded domains (polytope type uncertainty) and the time delays are supposed to be constant. Delay-independent as well as delay-dependent stability conditions assuring robust stability and a prescribed H ∞ disturbance attenuation for the filtering error system are established, in both cases, in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be efficiently solved by standard optimization procedures with global convergence assured. Two illustrative examples are analyzed.

Java has reinvigorated the debate on the `best' language to use for CS1. Much of the controversy centers on the goals of CS1, specific language constructs that either hinder or support the first formal introduction to programming, and, even, `real-world' relevance. Missing from typical discussions is the effect of the language choice in CS1 on CS2 and subsequent courses in the CS curriculum. In all such dialogues, it is important to note the characteristics of the department at hand. While many programs can afford to choose a language (such as Scheme) purely for pedagogical reasons, others (if not most), due to pressure from students, industry, advisory boards, select a language with some market appeal. Small departments that serve students who expect an immediate transition to a professional job typically choose a traditional procedural language like C, Pascal, Modula-2, or a popular OO language like C++, Java, Ada95, or Visual Basic. Hence, we focus here on the choice of one of these languages, and the resulting effects on students' progression in the CS curriculum.

The U.S. Navy recently conducted an analysis of alternatives (AOA) to set the stage for determining the characteristics and acquisition strategy for its next generation aircraft carrier. The platform design selected is expected to be in service throughout the 21st century. The parameters under consideration for change in the new carrier design lie in the areas of propulsion and electric power generation, aviation, survivability, service life, and total ownership cost (TOC) reduction. The issue of affordability is paramount This paper focuses on the need for the program management office and its supporting cost analysis staff to understand the life cycle cost (LCC) of the existing and proposed future aircraft carriers and to then translate these LCC's into meaningful information for cost-conscious decision making. The challenge is to relate the LCC in terms the key decision-makers and the engineering team can use to satisfy their respective roles. Thus, it is necessary to translate the results of the given ship design alternative LCC's into the paradigms of the respective stakeholders: Fleet User (operators of aircraft carriers) Ship Designers (translators of the fleet operator requirements) program Sponsors (providers of the funding resources) program Management Office, Ship builder and Supporting Industry (executors of the acquisition and construction of the ship) Navy and OSD decision-makers (overseers of program execution) The paper describes the aircraft carrier LCC breakdown structure that has resulted, in part, from a recent navy/shipbuilder integrated product team effort to capture total ownership costs.
