We have proposed for the task of hourly electric load forecasting a hybrid neural system combining unsupervised and supervised learning. The system consists of a recurrent neural gas (RNG) network and many Elman neural networks (ENs). RNG is a modification we introduced in the neural gas (NG) network in order to enable it to do clustering using a sequence of input data. For verifying the RNG's performance, many architectures are compared in the learning of global and local models. In a global model only one supervised network is trained and in a local model the training examples are grouped by a clustering algorithm and each one of these groups is sent to different supervised networks. These architectures use different clustering algorithms (NG and RNG) or different supervised networks for prediction (ENs that are trained by backpropagation or backpropagation through time, and feedforward networks).

It is possible to acquire human motion as 3-dimensional time series data by the development of sensing technology in recent years. The DP matching method is well known for recognition of time series data such as voice. The similarity between two time series data can be measured by DP matching. However, since human motion data consists of multiple mutually-synchronized time series data, the similarity between two human motions needs to take into consideration not only the similarities between two person's motion data of the same part, but also two person's degrees of synchronizations of all the part's movements. This research aims to rate a user motion by measuring the similarity between the user motion and a teacher's model motion. By considering two types of similarities called movement similarity and synchronization similarity, we propose a way for measuring human motion similarity.

The proposed approach is applied not only to generate the free gait for a quadruped robot walking in difficult terrain, but also to judge the robot stability. This report summarises and builds on the results of the "Directions and Methodologies for Empirical Software engineering Research" group discussion. In particular, we considered the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to empirical software engineering research in light of the discussions and presentations during the workshop. The following sections describe each of these aspects of our discussion in turn. In addition, to finalise our discussion we agreed on a three-point plan for future work.

This paper describes the results of the working group investigating the issues of empirical studies for evolving systems. The groups found that there were many issues that were central to successful evolution and this concluded that this is a very important area within software engineering. Finally nine main areas were selected for consideration. For each of these areas the central issues were identified as well as success factors. In some cases success stories were also described and the critical factors accounting for the success analyzed. In some cases it was later found that a number of areas were so tightly coupled that it was important to discuss them together.

A variety of alternate training strategies for implementing the dual heuristic programming (DHP) method of approximate dynamic programming in the neurocontrol context are explored. The DHP method of controller training has been successfully demonstrated by a number of authors on a variety of control problems in recent years, but no unified view of the implementation details of the method has yet emerged. A number of options are described for sequencing the training of the controller and critic networks in DHP implementations. Results are given about their relative efficiency and the quality of the resulting controllers for two benchmark control problems.

Because joins are time-consuming operations in database systems, many researchers have done a lot of research work for improving the performance of join algorithms, including join filtering techniques. This paper presents a new filter, the signature filter, to improve further the performance of various join algorithms. We have carried out experiments in an object-oriented database system to analyze the filtering ability of signature filters and the performance of join algorithms with signature filters. The relationship between signature and bit vector filters is also discussed in this paper.
