Arabidopsis is a widely used model plant to gain basic knowledge on plant physiology and development. Live imaging is an important technique to visualize and quantify elemental processes in plant development. To uncover novel theories underlying plant growth and cell division, accurate cell tracking on live imaging is of utmost importance. The commonly used cell tracking software, TrackMate, adopts tracking-by-detection fashion, which applies Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) for blob detection, and Linear Assignment Problem (LAP) tracker for tracking. However, they do not perform sufficiently when cells are densely arranged. To alleviate the problems mentioned above, we propose an accurate tracking method based on Genetic algorithm (GA) using knowledge of Arabidopsis root cellular patterns and spatial relationship among volumes. Our method can be described as a coarse-to-fine method, in which we first conducted relatively easy line-level tracking of cell nuclei, then performed complicated nuclear tracking based on known linear arrangement of cell files and their spatial relationship between nuclei. Our method has been evaluated on a long-time live imaging dataset of Arabidopsis root tips, and with minor manual rectification, it accurately tracks nuclei. To the best of our knowledge, this research represents the first successful attempt to address a long-standing problem in the field of time-lapse microscopy in the root meristem by proposing an accurate tracking method for Arabidopsis root nuclei. © 2025, CC BY.

Adaptive Contextual Caching for Mobile Edge Large Language Model Service

Mobile edge Large Language Model (LLM) deployments face inherent constraints, such as limited computational resources and network bandwidth. Although Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) mitigates some challenges by integrating external knowledge bases, inefficient cache management can still result in high retrieval latency and frequent cache updates. To address these issues, we propose an Adaptive Contextual Caching (ACC) framework that anticipates user needs by proactively caching semantically relevant data for mobile-edge LLMs. ACC utilizes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) module to refine cache replacement policies, balancing user context, document similarity, and the overhead associated with cache misses. Experimental results demonstrate that ACC increases cache hit rates to over 80% after only 11 training episodes, outperforming FIFO, LRU, and semantic-only caching while reducing retrieval latency by up to 40%. In particular, ACC also reduces local caching overhead (i.e., the cost of updating the cache when a miss occurs) by as much as 55%, enabling scalable, low-latency LLM services in resource-constrained edge environments. © 2025, CC BY.

Interest in the two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) continues to intensify, driven by their suitable band gaps to supplant silicon as next-generation semiconductor materials. Among various TMDs, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is renowned for its superior electrical properties in carrier density and mobility under ambient conditions. Despite its notable attributes, the behavior of monolayer WSe2 in the electron-doped regime under cryogenic conditions remains largely uncharted, particularly concerning its magnetotransport properties. In this study, we reveal the transport mechanisms of monolayer WSe2 from high temperatures down to the cryogenic regime. As evident by Efros–Shklovskii variable-range hopping (E-S VRH) in the cryogenic regime, strong Coulomb interactions arise between electrons. Above 8 K, an uncommon nonsaturated quadratic large magnetoresistance (MR) can be explained by the wave-function shrinkage model, which is consistent with the E-S VRH transport mechanism. Notably, the nonsaturated quadratic large MR shows a magnitude up to 1740% at 13 T. These findings underscore the potential applications for monolayer WSe2 in cryogenic field-effect devices, magnetic sensors, and memory devices and mark a significant advance in magnetotransport research.

The capability of the spin-orbit torque (SOT) generated via phenomena such as the spin Hall effect in heavy metals, in switching the magnetization of an adjacent magnetic material, has been studied extensively over the last decade. The efficiency of SOT generation is commonly quantified in terms of the spin Hall angle θSH. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally that implanting platinum (Pt) with phosphorus (P), resulting in Pt (P) d, where d denotes the implantation dose, increases θSH by a factor of 7, from 0.06 (d = 0) to 0.43 (d = 10 × 1016 ions/cm2). The enhanced θSH along with factors such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and resistivity, lead to reduction of the critical current density for switching the perpendicular magnetization of ferrimagnetic rare earth-transition metal alloy Gd26Fe74, by a factor of nearly 27, from 4.0 × 1011 A/m2 (d = 0) to 1.5 × 1010 A/m2 (d = 10 × 1016 ions/cm2). Further, the switching current density at zero thermal fluctuations and thermal stability factor were evaluated and found to be 2.0 × 1010 A/m2 and 61.4 (d = 10 × 1016 ions/cm2), with the latter being sufficiently above the required threshold for commercial memory applications. Our results suggest that Pt (P) could be a strong candidate in realizing efficient SOT driven magnetization switching leading to the development of improved memory and logic devices in the future. Oxidative stress, characterized by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, plays a pivotal role in inflammatory responses associated with both chronic diseases and acute injuries. In this study, OXidative Stress PREDictor (OxSpred), a supervised learning model tailored to accurately annotate the oxidative stress state of innate immune cells at the single-cell level, is introduced. Compared to the traditional gene-set-variation-analysis-based enrichment method, OxSpred demonstrates superior accuracy with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.89 and offers interpretable embeddings with significant biological relevance. Using the predicted ROS states, precise elucidation and interpretation of the roles of novel innate immune cell subtypes can be achieved. Overall, OxSpred enhances the utility of single-cell transcriptomic datasets by providing a robust in silico method for determining intracellular oxidative stress states, thereby enriching the understanding of innate immune cell functions during inflammation. © 2024 The Author(s). This study presents a novel approach to human keypoint detection in low-resolution thermal images using transfer learning techniques. We introduce the first application of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in thermal image computer vision, establishing a new paradigm for mobility assessment. Our method leverages a MobileNetV3-Small encoder and a ViTPose decoder, trained using a composite loss function that balances latent representation alignment and heatmap accuracy. The model was evaluated using the Object Keypoint Similarity (OKS) metric from the COCO Keypoint Detection Challenge. The proposed model achieves better performance with AP, AP50, and AP75 scores of 0.861, 0.942, and 0.887 respectively, outperforming traditional supervised learning approaches like Mask R-CNN and ViTPose-Base. Moreover, our model demonstrates superior computational efficiency in terms of parameter count and FLOPS. This research lays a solid foundation for future clinical applications of thermal imaging in mobility assessment and rehabilitation monitoring. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Resistance spot welding of three steel sheets is used in automotive manufacturing. The determination of welding conditions for three steel sheets welding is more difficult than that for two steel sheets welding because in the former case, two interfaces are simultaneously welded. The welding condition to improve the weld strength of thin and thick sheets’ interface is required for thin, thick, and thick sheets welding. In addition, avoiding weld spatter is an important technical concern for the three sheets welding. This paper discusses the triply coupled effects of elasto–plastic large deformation contact, electric current, and thermal conduction for the three sheets welding via triply coupled finite element analyses. The triply coupled effects of thin and thick sheets’ interface and those of thick and thick sheets’ interface are compared to discuss the special characteristics of the triply coupled effects of three sheets welding. The nugget diameter of the thick and thick sheets’ interface is larger than that of the thin and thick sheets’ interface because the electrical contact resistance and the base electrical resistance of high-strength steels are higher than those of general-strength steels. Furthermore, the chain of the coupled effects of electrical resistances, Joule heat generation, temperatures, and electrical resistances is strong. As the effect of welding current on temperature by the coupling effect for the thick and thick sheets’ interface is stronger than that for the thin and thick sheets’ interface, the possibility of spatter increases. Increasing the nugget diameter solely for the thin and thick sheets’ interface using electrode force is difficult because the effect of the electrode force on the nugget diameter is approximately the same for both interfaces. On the contrary, material characteristics can affect the nugget diameter solely for either of the interfaces. The possibility of spatter increases for the welding condition with a sheet gap bec

In this paper, we present an approach that can handle Z-numbers in the context of multi-criteria decision-making problems. The concept of Z-number as an ordered pair Z=(A, B) of fuzzy numbers A and B is used, where A is a linguistic value of a variable of interest and B is a linguistic value of the probability measure of A. As human beings, we communicate with each other by means of natural language using sentences like "the journey from home to university most likely takes about half an hour." The Z-numbers are converted to fuzzy numbers. Then the Z-TODIM and Z-TOPSIS are presented as a direct extension of the fuzzy TODIM and fuzzy TOPSIS, respectively. The proposed methods are applied to two case studies and compared with the standard approach using crisp values. The results obtained show the feasibility of the approach.
