IoT edge platform has become popular in various distributed environments. The edge devices need to communicate BigData among them or with the cloud servers by collaborating with AI technologies for finding events from the applications. Those devices exchange data streams from such as distributed sensors and remote image/video devices. We focus on an acceleration technique for the communication performance using a stream-based lossless data compression technology. This paper proposes a parallelization technique for the compression process in a software environment running on a multicore processor. The technique invokes concurrent compression processes assigned to multiple threads with splitting a data stream to chunks. The paper exposes three scheduling methods for assigning the chunks to the threads: in-order, hybrid and out-of-order. As an original data order of chunks must be obtained in decompression side, the proposed technique introduces packeting mechanisms in each chunk by adding headers to support the scheduling methods. Through experimental performance evaluations, we discuss the packeting overhead focusing on compression ratio and speedup by the parallelization with three scheduling methods.

To model the periodicity of beats, state-of-the-art beat tracking systems use 'post-processing trackers' (PPTs) that rely on several empirically determined global assumptions for tempo transition, which work well for music with a steady tempo. For expressive classical music, however, these assumptions can be too rigid. With two large datasets of Western classical piano music, namely the Aligned Scores and Performances (ASAP) dataset and a dataset of Chopin's Mazurkas (Maz-5), we report on experiments showing the failure of existing PPTs to cope with local tempo changes, thus calling for new methods. In this paper, we propose a new local periodicity-based PPT, called predominant local pulse-based dynamic programming (PLPDP) tracking, that allows for more flexible tempo transitions. Specifically, the new PPT incorporates a method called 'predominant local pulses' (PLP) in combination with a dynamic programming (DP) component to jointly consider the locally detected periodicity and beat activation strength at each time instant. Accordingly, PLPDP accounts for the local periodicity, rather than relying on a global tempo assumption. Compared to existing PPTs, PLPDP particularly enhances the recall values at the cost of a lower precision, resulting in an overall improvement of F1-score for beat tracking in ASAP (from 0.473 to 0.493) and Maz-5 (from 0.595 to 0.838). © 2014 IEEE.

This study explores the feasibility of using large language models (LLMs), specifically GPT-4o (ChatGPT), for automated grading of conceptual questions in an undergraduate Mechanical engineering course. We compared the grading performance of GPT-4o with that of human teaching assistants (TAs) on ten quiz problems from the MEEN 361 course at Texas A&M University, each answered by approximately 225 students. Both the LLM and TAs followed the same instructor-provided rubric to ensure grading consistency. We evaluated performance using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) to assess the alignment between rankings and the accuracy of scores assigned by GPT-4o and TAs under zero- and few-shot grading settings. In the zero-shot setting, GPT-4o demonstrated a strong correlation with TA grading, with Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient exceeding 0.6 in seven out of ten datasets and reaching a high of 0.9387. Our analysis reveals that GPT-4o performs well when grading criteria are straightforward but struggles with nuanced answers, particularly those involving synonyms not present in the rubric. The model also tends to grade more stringently in ambiguous cases compared to human TAs. In recent years, digital technologies have been used to support discussions about the city and also to involve citizens in participatory public processes. However, despite the widespread use of social media platforms, old issues related to engagement and participation still persist in digital initiatives. The main goal of this study is to carry out an empirical evaluation of a collective intelligence model that combines crowdsourcing and social storytelling to support discussions about the city from a bottom-up perspective. Within a design science research approach we designed a participatory action study that was carried out through a workshop with students and professionals from different areas, such as architecture, urban design and information technology. As a result, we were able to assess whether the collective intelligence model was acceptable to the participants by investigating whether the behavioral assumptions were valid and thus outlining some contributions to the field of urban informatics. © 2022 IEEE.

Over the last years, the engine calibration task has mostly been conducted based on the engineers' knowledge. As a result, considering the complexity of modern engines, finding the most suitable configuration for each situation has become an impractical and expensive task. Apart from causing engines to be produced with inadequate calibration configuration, it can also decrease the lifespan of their components, degrading their efficiency. This paper proposes a machine learning-based digital twin model for pressure prediction in a fuel injection system, split into two steps. First, we extract statistical engine features based on a predefined time window to represent the engine behavior over time. Second, a digital twin implemented through a machine learning model is used to predict pressure levels in the fuel injection system. As a result, the predicted values can be used to assist the engine common rail system module in avoiding undesired engine states. Experiments performed on a new dataset, built over a real diesel-based engine, consisting of 208 features and over 1.3 million instances, have shown the feasibility of our proposal. The proposed scheme can predict in an advance time of 0.1 seconds the pressure levels for a fuel injection system with only 0.057 RMSE. Moreover, it increases its error rate by only 10.6% if a 0.5-second time advance is required. © 2022 IEEE.

In agricultural water research, the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has emerged as a pivotal approach for large-scale data collection. Water availability in the context of water quality is very important, both for domestic and industrial purposes. For domestic purposes, drinking water and bathing water are separated. Meanwhile, for the palm oil industry, boiler filler is differentiated from additional process water (dilution water). Water quality parameters can be assessed from turbidity and Total Dissolve Solid (TDS). Measurements using measuring instruments separately and repeatedly require significant energy, time, and costs. This research was conducted with the primary objective of presenting a novel method for categorizing water quality with the approach of IoT sensor technology. The research methodology entailed the utilization of an integrated IoT water sensors system in conjunction with manual water categorization. The methods consist of (1) system design, (2) design and installation of sensor and IoT-based microcontrollers, and (3) accuracy and precision testing compared with laboratory measurements. The precision of the integrated IoT water sensors was assessed through a dedicated sensor precision test, resulting in an accuracy rate of 94.4% for the turbidity sensor and 97.5% for the TDS sensor. Notably, this approach successfully discriminated drinking water with valid categorization, while other water types, including groundwater, water with tea, and water with coffee, yielded null categorization results. © 2023 IEEE.

The management of nurses' orders to a Peruvian hospital pharmacy faces efficiency challenges, which affects time spent on patient care. This context highlights the need for a system that optimizes this process. In this sense, a web-based system is proposed for the automation of orders from the nurse's cell phone, which uses a customized model for automatic speech recognition. The development of the system was divided into three stages: first, data collection with 21 orders placed by three nurses and 978 audio recordings to validate the automatic speech recognition model; second, implementation of the system allowing agile order processing; and finally, evaluation of results in terms of time and accuracy. The findings indicate that the processing time ranged from 37.70 to 60.15 seconds, representing a 97%-time reduction in operational tasks. In addition, the Word Error Rate was 10.51%, significantly lower than the 25.05% of Whisper Large V2. These results demonstrate the system's potential for adoption in various hospital contexts.

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects a considerable percentage of women of reproductive age and is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, leading to symptoms such as pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea. The aim of this study is to develop a predictive model for the classification of endometriosis using four Machine Learning algorithms: Random Forest, LASSO, SVM, and Naive Bayes. For this purpose, a dataset from the Global Health Data Exchange was utilized, consisting of 1,000 cases of patients with endometriosis. The methodology included data cleaning and preprocessing, as well as the evaluation of each algorithm's performance using four metrics: precision, recall, F1-Score, and accuracy. The findings revealed that the Random Forest algorithm was the most effective in identifying endometriosis, outperforming the other algorithms with a precision of 0.99 for the “endometriosis” class and an overall accuracy of 0.98.
