This paper tackles the short-term hydro-power unit commitment problem in a multi-reservoir system - a cascade-based operation scenario. For this, we propose a new mathematical modelling in which the goal is to maximize the total energy production of the hydro-power plant in a sub-daily operation, and, simultaneously, to maximize the total water content (volume) of reservoirs. For solving the problem, we discuss the Multi-objective Evolutionary Swarm Hybridization (MESH) algorithm, a recently proposed multiobjective swarm intelligence-based optimization method which has obtained very competitive results when compared to existing evolutionary algorithms in specific applications. The MESH approach has been applied to find the optimal water discharge and the power produced at the maximum reservoir volume for all possible combinations of turbines in a hydro-power plant. The performance of MESH has been compared with that of well-known evolutionary approaches such as NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, and MOEA/D in a realistic problem considering data from a hydro-power energy system with two cascaded hydro-power plants in Brazil. Results indicate that MESH showed a superior performance than alternative multi-objective approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy, providing a profit of $412,500 per month in a projection analysis carried out. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Real-time, guaranteed safe trajectory planning is vital for navigation in unknown environments. However, real-time navigation algorithms typically sacrifice robustness for computation speed. Alternatively, provably safe trajectory planning tends to be too computationally intensive for real-time replanning. We propose FaSTrack, Fast and Safe Tracking, a framework that achieves both real-time replanning and guaranteed safety. In this framework, real-time computation is achieved by allowing any trajectory planner to use a simplified planning model of the system. The plan is tracked by the system, represented by a more realistic, higher dimensional tracking model. We precompute the tracking error bound (TEB) due to mismatch between the two models and due to external disturbances. We also obtain the corresponding tracking controller used to stay within the TEB. The precomputation does not require prior knowledge of the environment. We demonstrate FaSTrack using Hamilton-Jacobi reachability for precomputation and three different real-time trajectory planners with three different tracking-planning model pairs. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Experimental Evaluation of a Checklist-Based Inspection Technique to Verify the Compliance of Software systems with the Brazilian General Data Protection Law

Context: Recent laws to ensure the security and protection of personal data establish new software requirements. Consequently, new technologies are needed to guarantee software quality under the perception of privacy and protection of personal data. Therefore, we created a checklist-based inspection technique (LGPDCheck) to support the identification of defects in software systems based on the principles established by the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD). Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of LGPDCheck for verifying privacy and data protection (PDP) in software artifacts and systems under execution compared to ad-hoc techniques. Method: To assess LGPDCheck and ad-hoc techniques experimentally through two quasi-experiments (two factors, two treatments). The first, in vitro, inspected the vision and requirements specifications artifacts of an integrated accounting information management system. The second, in vivo, they inspected a public and available mobile application used to support legal services to citizens in Brazil. Results: The studies indicate that LGPDCheck improves inspection consistency, detects more PDP defects compared to ad-hoc inspections, is more efficient than ad-hoc inspections when inspecting vision and requirements specifications artifacts, and is comparable in effectiveness to ad-hoc inspections. After initial use, LGPDCheck received positive feedback and was perceived as a useful and easy-to-use technique for detecting PDP defects. The professionals strongly recommended using LGPDCheck for this purpose. Conclusion: LGPDCheck is a feasible checklist-based inspection technique for detecting PDP defects in software systems. However, further studies are necessary to strengthen confidence in LGPDCheck as a recommended technique for privacy and data protection in software artifacts and systems in Brazil. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

With the augmentation of traffic exponentially, we observe that traffic congestion does not guarantee road safety or enhance the driving experience. In the recent past, Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV), a social network paradigm permits social relationships among every vehicle in the network or with any road infrastructure to render a radically useful environment. SIoV is beneficial for the drivers, in improving road safety, avoiding mishaps, and providing a friendly-driving experience. In this paper, we propose a traffic scheduling algorithm to gain the maximum throughput for the flow of vehicles at a road intersection with the formation of social relationships among the vehicles and with the Road Side Units (RSUs). The algorithm estimates the flow rate of vehicles for lanes at the intersections exploiting the volume of traffic moving through the given road. A condition matrix is designed for the consistent movement of traffic considering different routes on the road segments. Social relationships are devised on various aspects of travel needs for a safe, agile, and better driving experience. Simulation results illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme with high traffic throughput, service rate and reduce the total travelling time, delay time, and average waiting time in comparison with Dynamic Throughput Maximization Framework and Adaptive Traffic Control Algorithm. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

This paper presents a novel system architecture that integrates blind source separation with joint beat and downbeat tracking in musical audio signals. The source separation module segregates the percussive and non-percussive components of the input signal, over which beat and downbeat tracking are performed separately and then the results are aggregated with a learnable fusion mechanism. This way, the system can adaptively determine how much the tracking result for an input signal should depend on the input's percussive or non-percussive components. Evaluation on four testing sets that feature different levels of presence of drum sounds shows that the new architecture consistently outperforms the widely-adopted baseline architecture that does not employ source separation. The professional training of the engineering student must be innovated in order to meet the accreditation criterion and with the requirement of the university law that requires presenting an investigation to obtain the bachelor's degree and another to obtain the professional degree of engineer. In order to develop in students, the skills to search for scientific and technological articles, and the critical skills to evaluate documents and extract the main ideas from them in relation to a particular topic, the SRAR method or specialized report review method has been proposed. It has been applied during five academic semesters in the electronic engineering telephone systems course, with satisfactory results. The SRAR method has six stages:*** of the SRAR method and proposed topic, 2. Initial bibliographic search, 3. Autonomous training, 4. Selection of articles for review, 5. Study and evaluation of articles 6. Writing of specialized report for review of articles.

The development of competencies in the professional training of an engineer includes: knowledge, skills and attitudes. For the development of skills, laboratory practices with physical equipment, virtual systems and remote systems are alternatives; the practices in the place of work performance through technical visits or pre-professional practices in the factories and maintenance workshops. Dual learning includes the participation of students in theoretical sessions in the center of studies and practical sessions of the installation and maintenance of machines and equipment in factories and workshops. The semidual learning proposal considers 50% of the practical sessions in the laboratories of the study center and 50% in the facilities of the industrial company. The experience of the application in the course of electrical machines is reported, where the application of the Semi-dual learning method in five academic semesters was planned, from 2019 - 1 to 2021 - 1, to date it was applied in the semester 2019 1, with satisfactory results.

A dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) system for breast cancer detection using contrast enhanced digital mammograms

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are gold-standard techniques for breast cancer detection. The newly contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM) integrates the complementary strengths of FFDM and MRI, and is being incorporated into the practice of leading institutions. The current clinical practice using CEDM is sub-optimal because it is primarily based on clinicians' trained eyes. Automated diagnostic systems under the conventional machine learning paradigm suffer from drawbacks, such as the requirement for precise segmentation, extraction of shallow features that do not suffice for diagnostic images, and adoption of a sequential design without a global objective. We propose a deep learning (DL)-empowered diagnostic system using CEDM, the core of which is a novel dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) model. The proposed system is innovative in several aspects, including (1) a dual-mode deep architecture design;(2) use of transfer learning to facilitate robust model estimation under small sample-size;(3) development of visualization techniques to help interpret the model results and facilitate inter- and intra-tumor malignancy quantification;and (4) minimization of human bias. We apply D2TL to classify benign vs. malignant tumors using the CEDM data collected from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. D2TL outperforms competing models and approaches. © 2019, © 2019 “IISE”.

The purpose of this research aims to show a thesis motivation strategy for systems engineering and electronic engineering undergraduates that allow them to obtain their bachelor's degree and professional title according to the three-stage methodology, first: know the technology developments of companies and universities from developed countries, second: to select research topics taking into account the global development, companies issues and the community of university environment, third: disseminate the selected topics and conduct research on these issues with students in their courses. As a methodology application, two universities were visited, one in Germany and another in the United States;each professor developed a research topics portfolio related to their research lines, professional interest and specialization. Students are able to start their final thesis research when they are at the fifth or sixth level. © 2019 IEEE.
