Conventional methods for pathogen detection mainly rely on time-consuming enrichment steps followed by biochemical identification strategies, which require assay times ranging from 24 hours to up to a week. However, in recent years, significant efforts have been made towards the development of biosensing technologies enabling rapid and close-to-realtime detection of waterborne pathogens. In previous studies, we developed a plastic optical fiber (POF) immunosensor using an optoelectronic configuration consisting of an U-shape probe connected to an LED and a photodetector. Bacterial detection was evaluated with the immunosensor immersed in a bacterial suspension in water with a known concentration. In the present work, we tested the sensitivity of a new optoelectronic configuration consisting of two POF U-Shape probes, one as the reference and the other as the immunosensor, for the detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli). In addition, another way of detection was tested where the sensors were calibrated on the air, before immersed in bacterial suspension and then read on the air again, making the immunosensor more sensitive and with a faster detection time. The developed sensor was capable to detect the presence of E. coli in a concentration of 10 4 CFU/mL (CFU - (Colony Forming Unity) in less than 10 minutes, a shorter time than in any previous studies applying fiber-optic-based biosensors, and much with a simpler and quicker methodology when compared with conventional laboratory technology.

With the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, the world has been increasingly reshaped across multiple domains - healthcare, finance, education, and creative fields. This expansion transforms individual tasks and facilitates complex collaborations where humans and machines work to- gether in unprecedented ways. Through machine learning and, more specifically, large language models (LLMs), AI now plays a crucial role in enhancing productivity. Recent technological advancements have significantly boosted the text generation capabilities of LLMs, enabling them to simulate personas that can represent groups or specific well-known individuals. By simulating expert perspectives, LLMs provide insights to guide human decision-making across various collaborative frameworks in Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Personas, as simulated identities, have proven helpful in group brainstorming sessions, consensus-building exercises, and virtual advisory boards, which help represent diverse viewpoints and facilitate group decisions. Among these CSCW methods, the delphi method is a well-established approach for reaching consensus among experts through iterative feedback and structured discussions. This work introduces a framework to manage and evaluate LLM-generated personas simulating expert input in delphi studies. Our contributions include a framework designed for evaluating LLM personas in delphi studies using a text similarity validation technique comparing real and simulated expert opinions and an evaluation of a delphi about Brazilian higher education, assessing the LLMs' reliability in real-world scenarios. Findings show LLMs can effectively replicate expert perspectives, enhancing AI integration in specialized decision-making.

The learning game “Present of the Future” has shown great potential as an effective tool for promoting futures literacy and speculative design in various educational and professional contexts. Through interactive and collaborative scenarios, participants are encouraged to explore future possibilities and develop creative solutions to contemporary challenges. despite its promising impact, the game still lacks a structured and systematic process for evaluating the user experience on three levels: the immediate reaction to the game experience, the retention of learning in the short and long term, and collaboration in creating future artifacts. We propose a detailed experiment and an evaluative questionnaire composed of open and closed questions to fill this gap and provide a foundation for critically analyzing these dimensions. Although the experiment has not yet been conducted, the research establishes a robust theoretical and methodological framework that will allow, in future stages, the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to complement and enrich this study. Thus, we expect that the future application of these practices will contribute to a deeper understanding of the pedagogical and collaborative effects of the game.

Data selection can be used in conjunction with adaptive filtering algorithms to avoid unnecessary weight updating and thereby reduce computational overhead. This paper presents a novel correntropy-based data selection method as an alternative to conventional data selection mechanisms based on squared error values. We developed a variable correntropy sensing algorithm to maximize the instantaneous correntropy function for the Gaussian kernel function to mitigate the impact of impulse noise and other forms of noise that can be disregarded in data selection. The proposed data selection mechanism can be implemented with any adaptive filtering algorithm. In simulations, the proposed method (implemented with the least mean squared algorithm) outperformed comparable error-based data selection schemes in terms of hit rate and miss rate, and the resulting weight updating ratio was close to the expected weight updating ratio. © 2023 IEEE. The development of intelligent techniques based on real-time monitoring for machining applications is one of the challenges of Industry 4.0, as in the Aerospace Industry. Drilling is the most used process before the assembly of airplane sheets, that nowadays are composed of different layers of materials with different optimized cutting conditions. The fault diagnosis during drilling stack materials is important to reduce cost and improve the process quality. Using a machine-tool, it is important that the fault diagnoser does not use a large amount of memory and be capable of detecting faults in a fast manner. In this paper, we propose a timed automaton model representing the drilling process of a Titanium plate on a CNC machine, which is suitable for fault diagnosis without any additional sensors. The diagnoser uses only the spindle power and Z axis displacement read directly from the system controller. The target faults in this case are: (i) excessive tool-wear or tool breakage;(ii) the tool finds an off-centered hole while producing a blind-hole;(iii) the tool finds an under layer of a different material, as it occurs in a bi-layer material;and (iv) the plate thickness is below the desired one and a though hole is produced. The results show that the model is capable of identifying all faults and it could be used to alert a problem on the sequence of machining holes in the industry. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. Enforcing current-state opacity of Cyber-Physical systems with multiple channels using event replacements

Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) integrates a physical plant with control and monitoring devices using communication networks. Since communication networks are used in CPS, some of the communication channels may be vulnerable to passive attacks with the objective of eavesdropping secret information. One of the strategies to ensure information security in CPS abstracted as deS is enforcing opacity. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to enforce current-state opacity of a networked deS with multiple channels based only on event replacements, where it is supposed that the attacker eavesdrops part of the communication channels to discover the system secret states. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an obfuscation policy based on event replacements (OPER) that ensures current-state opacity of CPS with multiple channels. The method generates an automaton map where all possible obfuscation policies that ensures the security objectives are represented.

Software systems are critical resources for our daily lives. Due to that, computer science students need to learn software engineering knowledge and skills to develop software systems with the expected quality, under budget, and on schedule. The size and complexity of software systems and the short time to market make it necessary to have various software developers working as a team. In this scenario, the success of a project depends on coordination, communication, and collaboration. The evolution of network, communication, and computer technologies made it possible for people from different countries to work on the same project. Therefore, software engineers must collaborate remotely with others in Global Software engineering (GSE) projects. Hence, students must also learn how to collaborate with people from different countries, with specific expectations, and different cultures and languages. This study lists the main GSE challenges the students must be ready to deal with, how researchers have addressed GSE, and how GSE education has been approached in the last five years. Researchers focused on teaching approaches, what students experienced during GSE courses, and the importance of GSE in industry. Students had the opportunity to face unsolved GSE challenges, and GSE courses still need to be improved.

U-Net and SegNet performances on lesion segmentation of breast ultrasonography images

Purpose: Screening is the predominant strategy for the early detection of breast cancer. However, image analysis depends on the experience of the radiologist, inserting subjective factors in the evaluation of findings. Most biopsies performed on women with suspicious lesions on breast imaging tests show benignity. This medical technique is invasive and consumes time and resources;therefore, there is a demand to reduce these unnecessary procedures. Computer-aided diagnostics has been increasingly used as a second-reader tool lately, decreasing the diagnostic uncertainty of specialists. Based on this fact, the development of such systems is crucial and can be accomplished by the refinement of its steps, i.e., more accurate segmentation and classification. Considering this scenario, the present work describes the implementation of two well-known convolutional neural networks, U-Net and SegNet, for the segmentation of lesions found in breast ultrasonography. defining which architecture is most appropriate for this task can ultimately help in reducing the number of biopsies performed. Methods: Convolutional neural networks are used in segmentation by classifying each pixel in an image, based on self-trained weights. Using a dataset of 2054 images, obtained in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, we compared the automatic segmentation performed by the networks with a manual segmentation made by a specialist. Results: Among the two proposed architectures, U-Net obtained better results in this task, obtaining a dice coefficient of 86.3%, and took 68.3% less training time than the SegNet, which achieved a dice score of 81.1%. Conclusion: The two networks can segment ultrasound images with useful accuracy depending on their configuration, with U-Net being faster to train and more accurate. © 2021, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

The double carcass rubber vulcanized bonded floating hose is widely used for oil and gas transportation between platforms and shuttle tankers. The tensile load is one of the main loads of the floating hose, and the tensile stiffness is an important design index parameter of the floating hose. Compared with the single carcass floating hose, it is difficult to analyze the local structural mechanical response of the double carcass floating hose under tensile load because the overall deformation of the double carcass floating hose is large and the wall structure is more complex. In this paper, a nonlinear mechanical finite element model was created by the commercial finite element software. Based on Embedded technology, cord layer and spiral steel layer were embedded as the skeleton layer of double carcass floating hose. The stress and strain trends of the hose helix reinforcement and the tension of the cord layer under tensile load were analyzed, and the accuracy of the numerical model was verified by comparing the tensile test results of the full-size double carcass floating hose. The influence of pressure and no pressure on the tensile properties of floating hoses was studied, and a prediction formula for the tensile stiffness of double carcass floating hoses was proposed. The research results can better predict the structural response of the hose under tensile load and provide guidance for the structural design of the hose to improve the service life of the floating hose. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

The growing participation of renewable sources in Brazil's electrical matrix, specially from wind and solar sources, together with the decrease of reservoirs regulation capacity, has raised concerns with peak load supply. This new scenario provoked the discussion about possible ways to store energy. Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) plants is a technologically mature and suitable alternative for storing large volumes of energy, with operational projects in several countries. In addition, Brazil already counts with existing reservoirs that can be converted into PHS plants. Given the importance that this kind of project can acquire soon, this paper aims to model the operation of a PHS plant, as well as to suggest possible operating policies, focusing on peak load supply and in its capacity of firming wind generation.
