This article presents the development and evaluation of an automated system for box classification based on the detection of some ISO 780:2015 symbols, using a UR5 robotic manipulator and advanced machine vision techniques. The methodology integrates sensors, vision algorithms, and robotics to achieve precise classification. The UR5 manipulator, with six degrees of freedom, was kinematically modeled using denavit-Hartenberg parameters, allowing for the calculation of the end-effector’s position and orientation. The system employs the Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) algorithm for the detection and classification of symbols on the boxes. Simulation results in CoppeliaSim, processed in MATLAB, reveal an average detection time of 55 milliseconds and a recognition rate exceeding 95%, even under varying lighting and orientation conditions. The system demonstrates high precision and flexibility in handling boxes of different sizes and arrangements, validating its efficiency in automated virtual industrial environments.

Future-related studies are key in identifying and predicting emerging technologies, fostering innovation, and driving scientific progress. Games have increasingly served as a tool to engage researchers in Technology Forecasting and Foresight activities, presenting a gamified approach to gather, analyze, and synthesize information to allow future foresight. In this work, we use the Rapid Review methodology to analyze the scientific literature and explore the use of games as tools for Technology Forecasting and Foresight. We analyzed and categorized the articles by theme and type of study, identifying the areas where games can be most beneficial to guide professionals performing Technology Forecasting and Foresight, helping companies and governments better understand the future. The empirical evidence found provides a comprehensive understanding of how games can enhance foresight activities and contribute to the success of Technology Forecasting and Foresight initiatives. Our analysis also provides insights for future research about gamified strategies in Foresight.

Effective Medium Temperature for Calculating the deformed doppler Broadening Function Considering the Tsallis Distribution

This paper presents a method for establishing an equivalence relationship between the doppler Broadening Function based on the Maxwell-Boltzmann Distribution and the deformed doppler Broadening Function, according to the generalised Tsallis Distribution, through an effective temperature [[EQUATION]] of the medium. The proposed method allows a precise calculation of the Maxwellian doppler Broadening Function, which reproduces the value of the Tsallis doppler Broadening Function (TDBF), where [[EQUATION]] is associated to the temperature of medium [[EQUATION]] and [[EQUATION]] relates to the effective temperature [[EQUATION]] of the medium. In this paper, we calculate [[EQUATION]] for typical values of the deformation factor [[EQUATION]] together with a parameterization example for [[EQUATION]] as a result of the ordered pair [[EQUATION]] , using a genetic algorithm technique. The results obtained were accurate, with a percentage deviation under 2%. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

decisions are constantly made and some of them may be extremely critical. However, most decision makers are unaware that their decisions may be biased. We used Behavioral Economics as a foundation to propose an ontology that shows how decision makers’ preferences are set and the situation in which they occur in an intuitive decision under risk and uncertainty. Our aim is that this ontology be used to improve their decisions by allowing them a better understanding of how they decide. In addition, this ontology can be used as part of a strategy to reduce biases. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Real-time optimization (RTO) is a model-based technique to drive process operation towards its optimal con-dition according to an objective function while respecting con-straints. However, whenever the used model presents structural uncertainty, the classic two-step approach fails to find the true optimum condition. Recently, a Modifier Adaption (MA) that uses Gaussian Process (G P) and trust-region concepts has been proposed in order to overcome plant-model mismatch without the need to estimate plant gradients. Based on these premises, this paper extends the methodology by proposing an Output MA (MAy) based on GP. The benefit of using output modifiers is its versatility to be applied in other model-based techniques, since it corrects the model instead of correcting a specific optimization problem. Therefore, we also propose a Hammerstein Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) that incorporates the MAy-GP correction term into the predictive controller. The results showed that the performance of MAy-GP is similar to the MA -G P, also showing the ability to drive the plant towards its optimum even in the presence of structural uncertainty. In addition, the proposed NMPC with MAy-GP correction terms was successful, due to the correction in the static term of the Hammerstein model.

This paper presents an application of an approximate relationship between the doppler broadening function based on the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution and the deformed doppler broadening function based on the generalized Kaniadakis distribution. The relationship is based on the effective temperature of the medium. The application is to the exemplary cases of the 238U, 232Th, and 240Pu nuclides. The straightforward implementation of the relationship demonstrates its suitability as a tool for diverse cross sections values. These values decrease with the anticipated attenuation of peaks as the Kaniadakis [[EQUATION]] value increases. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

despite the wide distribution and diversity of extant Anguilliformes in tropical America (central western Atlantic and central eastern Pacific), no fossil moray ell (Muraenidae) has been reported to date from this region. Here, we describe the first three fossil specimens of Muraeninae from America: one from the Late Miocene Gatun Formation (Fm.), the second from the Late Pliocene Escudo de Veraguas Fm., both from Panama, and the third from the Late Pliocene rio Banano Fm. in Costa Rica. Gymnothorax pierreolivieri nov. sp. from the Gatun Fm. is described based on the skull and an in situ otolith. The new species is characterized by a premaxilla-ethmo-vomerine bone (PMx-Etv) with 15 marginal fang-like teeth, two medial teeth, and 13 vomerine teeth arranged in a single row. The dorsal stem of the PMx-Etv forms a very thick and massive structure, with a single anterior foramen located in the anterior tip of the bone. The maxilla has 16 teeth arranged in a double row. The sagitta otolith is elliptic and tapered anteriorly;its posterior margin is smooth and gently rounded;its dorsal margin is slightly arched and elevated posteriorly. The isolated otoliths from the Escudo de Veraguas Fm. in Panama and from the rio Banano Fm. in Costa Rica are putatively assigned to Echidna sp. and Enchelycore sp., respectively. The diversification of American Muraenidae seems to have been driven by oceanic water interchanges and species dispersal associated to marine currents that flowed eastward through the Central American Seaway prior to the total closure of the Panama Isthmus. The extant American muraenid diversity illustrates allopatric speciation (vicariance) when populations from the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans were isolated by the late Tertiary uplift of the Isthmus of Panama. The palaeoceanographic changes driven by this geological event have had evolutionary consequences on faunal turnover and extinctions through space and time and is reflected by the extant fish diversity.

Event-based cryptography for automation networks of cyber-physical systems using the stream cipher ChaCha20

In this paper, we consider Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) in a Discrete-Event systems (deS) framework, and consider cyber attacks in the automation network of the CPS, where a malicious agent eavesdrops communication channels with the objective to gather information about the system behavior. We propose a cryptographic scheme to be applied in an automation network which cipher events without altering the size or structure of the transmitted data. In addition, the proposed cryptographic scheme leads to small communication delays, which makes it suitable for application in automation networks. We call this scheme event-based cryptography, where an event is defined as any change in the binary signals transmitted in the network. In order to do so, we propose a method for the codification of events as event vectors, which is suitable for encryption. We also propose the use of a stream cipher called ChaCha20, which is known to have a high resistance to cryptanalysis. A simulated example is used to illustrate the application of the proposed event-based cryptography, and to make a comparison with the RSA cipher, a public-key cipher widely used in Information Technology.

In mobile robotics, an essential requirement for the fusion of different sensors is that measurements are expressed with respect to the same reference. In this sense, the transformation between sensors and robot is necessary to ensure better sensor fusion. Therefore, this article proposes an extrinsic sensor calibration based on markers and associated to three orthogonal planes. This technique is applied to two calibration approaches, LiDAR-Robot and LiDAR-Camera. The first one calculates the transformation between a 3D LiDAR sensor and a robot, and the second system calculates the transformation between a 3D LiDAR and an embedded RGB camera. To demonstrate the efficiency of our method, we performed simulations on the CoppeliaSim simulator and experiments in the laboratory. Then, the results show that it is possible to calibrate the sensors with the methodologies.
