In the present work it is investigated the performance of an algorithm that associates Differential Evolution and Constructal design for geometrical optimization of a heat transfer problem. It is considered the intrusion of a cooled double T-shaped cavity into a rectangular conducting solid wall with internal heat generation. The main purpose here is to evaluate the algorithm capability to reproduce the effect of geometric ratios over the dimensionless maximum excess of temperature (performance indicator of the heat transfer problem), as well as, the influence of Differential Evolution (de) parameters over the optimization analysis. The definition of search space for each degree of freedom and problem constraints is performed with Constructal design, while the Differential Evolution algorithm is used in the optimization process. Here parameters as mutation operator (M), crossover constant (CR), differential amplification factor (F), Population Size (PS) and Generations number (G) are evaluated. A theoretical recommendation about the suitable parameters set for the optimization algorithm for this kind of heat transfer problem is proposed. Results indicated that the crossover constant (CR) and amplification factor (F) are important parameters for suitable prediction of the effect of degrees of freedom over thermal performance. Moreover, when CR = 0.7 and F = 1.5 results obtained with the algorithm are more robust for the achievement of the best shapes and requires lower number of iterations (IT = PS ×G) for reproduction of effect of geometric variables over performance. © 2019 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Recently, Dinis & Camotim (2017) performed an in-depth numerical investigation aimed at developing, validating and assessing the merits of a novel Direct Strength Method design approach for short-to-intermediate cold-formed steel simply supported equal-leg angle columns the end cross-sections are prevented from warping and torsion, and pinned with respect to major and minor-axis bending, which amounts to being rigidly attached to rigid plates resting on spherical hinges ("spherically-hinged columns"). However, a shortcoming of the above investigation was the lack of experimental validation, due to the fact that no available experimental failures loads concerning these columns were found in the literature. The research work reported in this paper provides a contribution towards filling this gap, since it consists of an experimental study, carried out at COPPE (federal University of rio de janeiro), on the behavior and load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel spherically-hinged equal-leg angle columns. After addressing the selection of the columns to be tested, the experimental set-up and test procedure are described in detail and the results obtained are presented and discussed. Such results comprise (i) initial geometrical imperfection measurements, (ii) equilibrium paths relating the applied load to key column displacements, (iii) deformed configurations (including the collapse modes) and (iv) failure loads. Next, attention is turned to assessing the merits of the DSM-based design approach proposed by Dinis & Camotim (2017). The comparison between the (i) experimental failure loads obtained in this work, as well as the previously available numerical ones, with (ii) their estimates provided by the novel DSM-based strength curves shows a very good correlation thus, it may be rightfully argued that the validation and calibration of this design approach has been successfully achieved. © (2019) by the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC) All rights reserved.

Tutorial on communication between access networks and the 5G core

Fifth-generation (5G) networks enable a variety of use cases, e.g., Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications, enhanced Mobile Broadband, and massive Machine Type Communication. To explore the full potential of these use cases, it is mandatory to understand the communication between User Equipment (UE), Radio Access Network (RAN), and 5G Core (5GC), which support new network concepts and paradigms. For example, network slicing plays a crucial role in the communication system to address the challenges expected by the 5G networks. 3rd Generation Partnership Project has recently published Release 16, including the protocols used to communicate between RANs and 5GC, i.e., Non-Access Stratum (NAS) and NG Application Protocol (NGAP). The main goal of this article is to present a comprehensive tutorial about NAS and NGAP specifications using a didactic and practical approach. The tutorial describes the protocol stacks and aspects of the functionality of these protocols in 5G networks, such as authentication and identification procedures, data session establishment, and allocation of resources. Moreover, we review message flows related to these protocols in UE and Next Generation Node B (gNodeB) registration. To illustrate the concepts presented in the tutorial, we introduce a 5GC tester that implements NAS and NGAP for availing of three open-source 5GC projects on a black-box testing methodology. © 2021, CC BY.

CO 2 Subsea Separation: Concept & Control Strategies

The high CO 2 content found in Pre-Salt offshore oil fields has led to cost-energetically processes for CO 2 removal and destination. In this paper, an innovative and promising alternative subsea separation process (SSP), proposed by Petrobras, was analyzed. Since a CO 2 rich phase is expected at reservoir conditions, subsea gravity separators can be employed avoiding large volumes of CO 2 from being sent to the topside, lowering gas processing plant complexity. A differential-algebraic system of equations (DAE) was developed for the SSP modeling. design and steady-state simulations were carried out within EMSO simulator. To ensure the process variables remain at their desirable values two control strategies, PID and Linear Model Predictive Control (MPC), were compared. The proposed process showed technical feasibility with up to 62% GOR reduction. The control strategies presented reasonable performance. MPC had for most of the controlled variables a better performance.

Marine transport is the most cost-effective mode of international long-distance transportation. Hence, marine transportation is responsible for an expressive demand for fossil fuels that results in around 3% of global CO2 emissions. Nowadays, this industry face challenges to reduce the GHG and air pollutant emissions of their ships. Rules and regulatory parameters to drastically reduce emissions from marine transport activities have been set. Thus, the utilization of alternative biofuels in marine transportation has caught the attention of the sector. Therefore, this study aims to assess the Brazilian potential to produce marine biofuels (biobunkers). For this purpose, the applied methodology includes the characterization of biofuel production pathways, the assessment of costs-effectiveness of the readiest pathways according to the Brazilian conditions. Further, a life cycle analysis (LCA) and the evaluation of biofuel production and distribution logistics in Brazil were performed. Preliminary results reveal that production costs are still higher than conventional marine fuels. The biofuels produced from soybeans and forest residues can reduce significantly the life cycle GHG emissions. The localization of biomass in countryside areas may hamper its production and distribution. However, the country’s well-established biofuel infrastructure and the high availability of biomass resources may favor biobunker production near coastal areas. © 2019 ETA-Florence Renewable Energies.

Water scarcity is a threat for mankind and its symptoms have been aggravated by several factors such as climate change effects, increase in population and accelerated urbanization. Among the alternatives of water supply, the desalination has become one of the most sustainable solutions to provide freshwater. However, the process of desalination requires high quantities of energy and the use of renewable energy sources can make the technology affordable for regions characterized by fresh-water scarcity where the supply from electricity is not accessible. In this context, wind power can be singled out because of the constant innovations and progress of the wind power industry, which grows rapidly worldwide. This study aims to use patent applications for the technological forecasting of wind-powered desalination in order to analyse its innovation potential. China is the leader country in the technological development of this field, accounting for almost 80% of patent applications in the last 17 years. The patents analysis showed that innovations are being developed to combine the wind power, mainly, with Reverse Osmosis technology. This study also shows the immense potential of integrating of these two technologies as a strategic alternative for remote regions affected by a lack of freshwater and with no electricity access.

despite the fact that deep neural networks performed well in arboreous urban vegetation semantic segmentation, they fell short of expectations. As a result, we evaluate the performance of SegFormer, a vision transformer-based deep learning. We compare the evaluation metrics of SegFormer with the deep learning architecture deepLabv3+. Two sets of image data, each having a different GSD, were employed (0.2 m and 0.5 m). In the semantic segmentation of tree vegetation in urban environments the SegFormer outperforms the state-of-the-art convolutional neural network, proving its capacity to map urban forests in RGB pictures. The SegFormer reported the best results including when we combined the different GSDs to train the model, which proved to be just as effective as training and testing with only the 0.20 m GSD. © 2022, The Authors.
