A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with an inherent notched band and steep slopes has been presented and implemented with the low temperature cofired ceramic technology. The filter is realized by a stepped-impedance T-shaped resonator (SITR) coupled to a pair of quarter-wavelength input/output feed-lines. The proposed SITR can facilitate not only a notched band, but also sharp roll-off characteristics. Measured results agree well with the HFSS simulated results. The whole size of the UWB filter is only 6.0×6.0×1.92 mm 3 .

Recent advances in embedded automation applications require quality of results in terms of speed and computational complexity, along with strict time-to-market schedules. To cope with these demands, the design industry is searching for novel approaches. Performance is sought by utilizing modern FPGA devices, offering hundreds of GFLOPs with maximum power efficiency. Productivity is enforced with HighLevel Synthesis (HLS) and Electronic System Level (ESL) design methodologies, that offer an efficient abstraction level to boost-up early prototyping. This paper presents a methodology and the required tool flow for the design of a System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture, as a reference for modern control applications. The advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) improved performance through hardware acceleration of demanding application cores, (b) improved quality of results with floating point calculations, (c) flexibility and integration of common peripheral devices supported by a RISC microcontroller and (d) improved designer productivity by avoiding Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) and other time consuming and error introducing procedures and working with C level design descriptions only. Experimental results show that the proposed SoC architecture is an efficient rapid prototyping platform for digital control applications, with very promising future extension capabilities. © 2013 Chinese automation and Computing Society in the UK - CACS.

With increasing usage of mobile devices to watch mobile video, the battery consumption of mobile devices will be dominated by video delivery and playback. In this paper, we develop battery efficient video delivery techniques that vary video transmission rate dynamically depending on battery and buffer levels of the mobile device, the channel conditions experienced, and video quality requirements while maximizing battery life and ensuring user experience. The proposed dynamic video rate adaptation techniques enable the base station to adapt the Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) transceiver configurations to reduce battery current required by MIMO components on the mobile device. The proposed techniques also make the base station stop video transmission opportunistically, thereby eliminating the battery load imposed by the mobile MIMO components. Experiments conducted under various network conditions for various video download profiles show that more than 50% improvement in battery lifetime is possible in comparison to conventional video download techniques not aware of battery.

Adaptive Bit Rate Streaming (ABR) has become a popular video delivery technique, credited to improving the quality of delivered video on wireless networks. At the same time, recent research has shown video caching in the Radio Access Network (RAN) can be a promising way to increase capacity of the network while reducing video latency and improving video quality of experience. In this work, we investigate the opportunities and challenges of combining the advantages of ABR streaming and RAN caching to maximize the video capacity of wireless networks. Since with ABR, each video is divided into multiple segments, chunks, and each chunk can be requested at different bit rates, the caching requirements are very different and challenging; a cache hit will require not only the presence of a specific video chunk, but also the availability of the desired bit rate. One way to solve this problem is to cache all variants of a video, but this approach may significantly increase storage and backhaul requirements or reduce the number of unique videos that can be cached. In this paper, we introduce a framework consisting of rate adaptation algorithm, video caching and processing within the wireless cloud, with the aim to improve video capacity of the wireless network and satisfy or exceed QoE of each video request. To achieve this goal, we propose a new ABR algorithm, along with an ABR aware Least Recently Used (LRU) caching policy with Processing (ABRLRU-P) to support caching of video chunks with different bit rates. Using our MATLAB statistical simulation framework, we demonstrate a capacity improvement of up to 83% when ABR is used with RAN caching and processing using the ABR-LRU-P policy compared with using no RAN caching and video processing. Further, using ABR along with ABRLRU-P caching policy can improve the capacity by 68% compared with using ABR and a straightforward static LRU caching policy which fetches all video bit rate versions of a video chunk upon a cache miss.

$H_\infty$ Filtering for Networked systems With Multiple Time-Varying Transmissions and Random Packet Dropouts

This paper is concerned with the H ∞ filtering for networked systems with multiple time-varying transmissions and random packet dropouts. We design a remote H ∞ filter for these two networked issues such that the filtering error system is exponentially stable and achieves a prescribed H ∞ performance level. A switched system approach is used to model the multiple time-varying transmission process, and a set of stochastic variables are employed to describe the random packet dropout phenomenon. By the switched system theory and some stochastic analysis methods, a sufficient condition for the existence of the H ∞ filter is derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Moreover, the filter gains are determined by solving an optimization problem. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

The feasibility of continuous decoding of self-initiated, self-selected hand movements to three-dimensional (3D) spatial targets from scalp electroencephalography (EEG) using linear decoders has been recently demonstrated. In this paper, we show that it is possible to train linear classifiers to decode hand movement direction to eight 3D spatial targets, in both planning and movement windows, using only the fluctuations in the amplitude of smoothed low-frequency signals from high-density scalp EEG. Taken together these results support the design of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) based on non-invasive scalp EEG signals and suggest that the current perception of the limits of EEG as a source signal for BCI applications merits further examination. The 3 rd Generation Partnership Project - Long Term Evolution (3GPP-LTE) is the best choice for multimedia data transmission in demanding situation. The 3GPP LTE provides high data transmission rate between the User Equipment (UE) and Evolved Node B (eNB) with lower latency and better throughput. However, with the advancement and increasing traffic of data load, it is necessary to have data scheduling with user requests. In real life situations, mobile users become impatient when they don't receive their desired data. Moreover, the LTE Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS) does not provide any type of scheduling to measure and manage the impatient user request in multimedia broadcasting scenario. So, we consider this situation in our proposed scheme and simulated a new type of hybrid scheduling scheme to overcome this problem. It also takes care of the server anomalies arising from multiple requests sent by the same user for the same data.

A combination of classifiers leads to a substantial reduction of classification errors in a wide range of applications. Among them, support vector machine (SVM) ensembles with bagging have shown better performance in classification than a single SVM. However, the training process of SVM ensembles is notably computationally intensive, especially when the number of replicated training datasets is large. This paper presents MRESVM, a MapReduce-based distributed SVM ensemble algorithm for scalable image annotation which re-samples the training dataset based on bootstrapping and trains an SVM on each dataset in parallel using a cluster of computers. A balanced sampling strategy for bootstrapping is introduced to increase the classification accuracy. MRESVM is evaluated in both experimental and simulation environments, and the results show that the MRESVM algorithm reduces the training time significantly while achieving a high level of accuracy in classifications. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The main idea behind this project is to provide a unified platform which will cover a complete process for embedded systems learning. A modular approach is considered for skills practice through supporting individualization in learning. This platform shall facilitate a novel development of universal approach in creative learning environment and knowledge management that encourage use of ICT. New learning model is challenging the education of engineers in embedded systems design through real-time experiments that stimulate curiosity with ultimate goal to support students to understand and construct their personal conceptual knowledge based on experiments. In addition to the technological approach, the use of cognitive theories on how people learn will help students to achieve a stronger and smarter adaptation of the subject. Applied methodology will be evaluated from the scientific point of view in parallel with the implementation in order to feedback results to the R&D.
