{\cal U}Boost: Boosting with the Universum

It has been shown that the Universum data, which do not belong to either class of the classification problem of interest, may contain useful prior domain knowledge for training a classifier [1], [2]. In this work, we design a novel boosting algorithm that takes advantage of the available Universum data, hence the name UBoost. UBoost is a boosting implementation of Vapnik's alternative capacity concept to the large margin approach. In addition to the standard regularization term, UBoost also controls the learned model's capacity by maximizing the number of observed contradictions. Our experiments demonstrate that UBoost can deliver improved classification accuracy over standard boosting algorithms that use labeled data alone.

Modern automation systems require both designtime and runtime integration of diverse engineering tools. Traditional integration approaches are based on repeating manual work, being time-consuming and error-prone. In this paper, applications of semantic integration, dealing with meaning of objects and their interfaces, is explained and shown on a real industrial use-case. Simulations are useful tools for process optimization or performance testing and the presented methodology makes their design for particular industrial plants flexible. The use-case shows that the design of simulation models for passive houses can be user-friendly and feasible even for non-experts as it is based on a graphical tool that enables to draw a passive house floor plan. Since neither this tool nor a universal simulation library, comprising atomic simulation blocks, were intended for simulation purposes, the presented methodology is a typical example of tool integration having heterogeneous data models. The goal of this paper is to propose an ontology-based formalization of knowledge representing structures of real industrial plants and simulation models. The paper also introduces the design of simulation models for passive houses from other engineering sources, which can be used by non-experts for simulation modeling. The practical usage is restricted by the fact that simulation parameters must be entered manually. The main contributions of the paper are the proposed structure of an automation ontology and a workflow of simulation model design that is not common in engineering disciplines.

Simulation models are important parts of industrial system analysis and control system design. Despite the wide range of possible usage, their formalization, integration and design have not been satisfactorily solved. This paper contributes to the design phase of simulation models for large-scale industrial systems, consisting of a large number of heterogeneous components. Nowadays, it is the simulation expert who assembles the simulation model for a particular industrial plant manually, which is time-consuming and error-prone. We propose to use a semantic engine performing SPARQL queries, which assembles the structure of a simulation model semi-automatically, using formalized knowledge about real industrial plant and available simulation blocks represented in appropriate ontologies. As each real plant device can be represented by more than one simulation blocks, the selection of suitable simulation candidates is based on matching interfaces of neighboring blocks. Evaluation on a real-life industrial use-case shows improvements in reducing development time and avoiding design errors. Major results of this paper are the proposed structures of the ontologies and the SPARQL query realizing the selection of the appropriate simulation blocks. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This paper is dealt with the fault detection problem for a class of network-based nonlinear systems with communication constraints and random missing measurements. The nonlinear plant is described by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy time-delay model, it has multiple sensors and only one of them can access to the fault detection filter at each transmission instant. The measurement signal is missing randomly and the missing rate differs from one channel link to another. The goal is to design a fault detection filter such that, the estimation error between the residual and fault is minimized. By casting the addressed fault detection problem into an auxiliary H∞ filtering problem of a stochastic switched fuzzy time-delay system, a sufficient condition for the existence of the desired fault detection filter is obtained. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed technique. © 2011 Asian Control Association.

Controller switching algorithms used for Unfalsified Adaptive Control are investigated. The concept of interfalsification, a generalization of the existing ε-hysteresis algorithm, is defined; the concept of self-falsification is introduced; and the two concepts are compared. New controller switching algorithms are designed based on the idea of self-falsification. These algorithms relax the assumption that the cost function be monotonically nondecreasing in time, and are thus more flexible than the existing inter-falsification algorithm. Simulations illustrate that the self-falsification algorithms can be used with non-monotone cost functions.

In the context of heterogeneous networks, femtocells are very promising. In order to properly simulate their behavior and their impact on the macrocell layer, it is necessary to be able to simulate the radio coverage of femtocells. Hence ParFlow is a possible deterministic model that can be used for such simulation. In this paper two implementations of ParFlow are presented: time domain and frequency domain. The performance are compared and the advantages/drawbacks of each model are investigated.

The event-triggered H_(infinity) control design is investigated for networked control systems with uncertainties and transmission delays. A novel event-triggering scheme is proposed, which has some advantages over traditional ones with a continuous detector. Considering the effect of the transmission delay, a delay system model for the analysis is firstly constructed. Then, based on the model and Lyapunov functional method, criteria for the stability with an H_(infinity) norm bound and criteria for the co-design of both the feedback gain and the trigger parameters are derived. In order to solve the feedback gain and the trigger parameters, the linear matrix inequality technique is employed. From the simulation example, it can be concluded that the proposed event-triggering scheme is superior to some other event-triggering schemes in some existing literature.
