This paper presents a survey of existing literature, standards, methods, and best practices for security requirements elicitation in the field of systemsengineering. Despite the abundance of research on requirements engineering, there is a notable scarcity of resources addressing security requirements from a systemsengineering perspective. This work integrates insights from both software centric security engineering and traditional systemsengineering to offer a consolidated reference for systems engineers. Key areas reviewed include relevant systemsengineering standards, Model-Based systemsengineering (MBSE) methods, systems Theory approaches, and software security requirements engineering practices. This survey aims to provide a valuable resource for systems engineers striving to enhance security requirements development during system design.

A new cross-faculty course was developed for engineering and environment students at the University of Waterloo. This offers an interdisciplinary learning experience in line with the institution’s vision for collaboration in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges, including the climate catastrophe. The course aimed to equip students to better appreciate the interconnectedness and complexity of real-world energy projects. The STEEP framework was created to aid students to systematically consider social, technical, environmental, economic, and policy factors. A case study in using the STEEP model for wind power is presented. Overall, students responded with positive feedback and appreciated the structure that the STEEP framework provided. Students applied the STEEP framework in a couple of group assignments. Planned improvements for future course offerings include: more technical content; streamlined readings; short reflection papers; soft skill training; and increased interaction between engineering and environment students.

Training neural networks by using conventional supervised backpropagation algorithms is a challenging task. This is due to significant limitations, such as the risk for local minimum stagnation in the loss landscape of neural networks. That may prevent the network from finding the global minimum of its loss function and therefore slow its convergence speed. Another challenge is the vanishing and exploding gradients that may happen when the gradients of the loss function of the model become either infinitesimally small or unmanageably large during the training. That also hinders the convergence of the neural models. On the other hand, the traditional gradient-based algorithms necessitate the pre-selection of learning parameters such as the learning rates, activation function, batch size, stopping criteria, and others. Recent research has shown the potential of evolutionary optimization algorithms to address most of those challenges in optimizing the overall performance of neural networks. In this research, we introduce and validate an evolutionary optimization framework to train multilayer perceptrons, which are simple feedforward neural networks. The suggested framework uses the recently proposed evolutionary cooperative optimization algorithm, namely, the dynamic group-based cooperative optimizer. The ability of this optimizer to solve a wide range of real optimization problems motivated our research group to benchmark its performance in training multilayer perceptron models. We validated the proposed optimization framework on a set of five datasets for engineering applications, and we compared its performance against the conventional backpropagation algorithm and other commonly used evolutionary optimization algorithms. The simulations showed the competitive performance of the proposed framework for most examined datasets in terms of overall performance and convergence. For three benchmarking datasets, the proposed framework provided increases of 2.7%, 4.83%, and

Unmanned Aerial systems (UASs) have become essential for targeting high-value assets due to their low cost and operational versatility, posing significant battlefield challenges. This study addresses the need for a low-cost, lightweight counterUAS (C-UAS) system that integrates seamlessly into infantry platoons. Using a model-based systemsengineering (MBSE) approach, stakeholder feedback informed use cases and operational requirements, allowing for the development of the system's logical architecture. The study incorporated prototyping to support the development of the system's physical architecture. The prototype featured a Raspberry Pi and a software-defined radio capable of detecting drones and emitting a jamming signal. Soldiers interfaced with the prototype via the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK), a system already deployed on the battlefield. Power was sourced from the conformal batteries worn by soldiers. The prototyping effort yielded critical insights into technical requirements, which were incorporated into the system's design. The lightweight, compact prototype demonstrates significant potential for field deployment, offering infantry units a costeffective, reliable solution for detecting and countering UAS threats. This study provides a foundation for future C-UAS development, addressing the urgent need for enhanced counterUAS capabilities in modern military operations.
