Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is an indicator frequently used for measuring efficiency of critical equipment. Typically presents a negative asymmetrical distribution, limited to the interval [0;1]. Due to this characteristic, it is uncommon using statistical control procedures for monitoring OEE. This study aims to contribute to this discussion by presenting an approach for monitoring OEE through statistical control procedures. The OEE/TEEP control chart is presented with sensitization procedures, allowing the user to adapt the results of the monitoring process to the needs of the monitored resource constraint. Performance results are presented based on an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, with 4551 sets of 20 thousand observations each. One application example is also presented, for illustrating the potential of the proposed control charts.

In this paper, an adaptive inventory management model, which is founded on a forecasting algorithm that utilizes RFID-based state and event data for tracking and dispatching of time sensitive materials in a manufacturing facility, is presented. The impact of integrating RFID technologies with inventory control on the shop floor is discussed. This study compares a traditional, static inventory model with the proposed model on the basis of cost savings, inventory and waste reduction, and decision making complexity. The validity of the proposed model is demonstrated in a simulation environment, which also demonstrates the overall benefits and effectiveness of RFID technologies in providing low cost manufacturing solutions, reduced inventory levels, and lower overall waste. © 2005 IEEE.

Proper supplier selection is very critical because a significant proportion of income is allocated for and spent on purchased items. This paper presents a supplier selection model for oil and gas projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This model is designed to guide users in selecting the most suitable supplier. The supplier selection decision is based on several criteria. The proposed model consists of five stages: item selection, initial supplier selection, selection criteria, supplier evaluation, and selection decision. It allows the decision makers to select the most suitable supplier to execute the job. Decision makers can evaluate the results based on the suppliers' ranking and the sensitivity of the case. A real case study is presented to demonstrate the application of the model. © Civil-Comp Press, 2015.

The strong tendency toward integrated systems and the system thinking approaches are shaping the way manufacturing enterprises are being managed, especially in an environment of market globalization, ever varying customer requirements and increasing competition. To achieve a competitive advantage an enterprise must cope with these changes in the working environment. The future development of manufacturing simulation systems is directed to integrated enterprise modeling in two direction: horizontally by integration of manufacturing processes with the entire enterprise logistics chain, and vertically by integration of the decision making processes at strategic, tactical and operation levels [1]. In this work, we introduce a hybrid approach to the integration of discrete-event models with system dynamic models to simulate the entire manufacturing enterprise. This approach basically covers the strategic, tactical, and operational levels of decision-making in a single simulation of multiple models at different levels and resolutions. System dynamics (SD) is utilized to model the higher levels of decision-making in the enterprise. On the other hand, discrete-event simulation (DES) models are utilized for the factory and shop floor levels. Studying the interaction between strategic planning and the production activities is the core of this work. Discrete event simulation has been the most usable simulation tool in manufacturing systems. It has the ability to describe the most complex systems at any level of details while allowing tracking the status of individual entities and resources and estimate numerous performance measures associated with these entities various operating conditions. This makes it most appropriate approach to simulate the detailed production activities. At the higher levels of decisions making, the detailed approach of DES is not appropriate [2,3,4]. Organizational models of production systems that focus on services and servitization are experiencing an increase in an application. These models emphasize the value proposition for the customer and a better understanding of the value creation process. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as those associated with Industry 4.0 also requires well-structured and results-oriented processes. In this perspective, although there are several tools for measuring both operations and organizational performance, the literature still lacks tools that integrate and align these two perspectives, accounting for activities at the operational level that reflect objectives at the strategic level, and vice-versa. Therefore, a procedure for aligning process performance (operations' performance) and strategic performance (organizational performance) in a service context is proposed. This procedure is based on three main components identified through a literature review: (1) guidelines associated with enterprise engineering that focus on processes, developed by Deschamps (2013);(2) a set of critical success factors for implementation of performance measurement systems that focus on organizational performance, developed by Keathley (2016);and (3) ten determinants of service quality, proposed by Parasuraman (1985). The alignment procedure is presented as being mediated by Parasuraman's model, relating enterprise engineering guidelines and critical success factors. © 2018 Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). Predicting Stock Prices Using Polynomial Classifiers: The Case of Dubai Financial Market

Predicting stock price movements is a challenging task for academicians and practitioners. In particular, forecasting price movements in emerging markets seems to be more elusive because they are usually more volatile often accompa-nied by thin trading-volumes and they are susceptible to more manipulation compared to mature markets. Technical analysis of stocks and commodities has become a science on its own;quantitative methods and techniques have been applied by many practitioners to forecast price movements. Lagging and sometimes leading technical indicators pro-vide rich quantitative tools for traders and investors in their attempt to gain advantage when making investment or trading decisions. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been used widely in predicting stock prices because of their capability in capturing the non-linearity that often exists in price movements. Recently, Polynomial Classifiers (PC) have been applied to various recognition and classification application and showed favorable results in terms of recog-nition rates and computational complexity as compared to ANN. In this paper, we present two prediction models for predicting securities’ prices. The first model was developed using back propagation feed forward neural networks. The second model was developed using polynomial classifiers (PC), as a first time application for PC to be used in stock prices prediction. The inputs to both models were identical, and both models were trained and tested on the same data. The study was conducted on Dubai Financial Market as an emerging market and applied to two of the market’s leading stocks. In general, both models achieved very good results in terms of mean absolute error percentage. Both models show an average error around 1.5% predicting the next day price, an average error of 2.5% when predicting second day price, and an average error of 4% when predicted the third day price.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks are communication networks built up of a collection of mobile devices which can communicate through wireless connections. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks have many challenges such as routing, which is the task of directing data packets from a source node to a given destination. This task is particularly hard in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: due to the mobility of the network elements and the lack of central control, robustness and adaptability in routing algorithms and work in a decentralized and self organizing way. Through the principles of systems architecting and engineering, the problem statement in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks could be defined more specifically and accurately. The uncertainties and techniques for mitigating and even taking positive advantages of them can be achieved through a framework of uncertainties as in [1]. The systems methodology framework called Total systems Intervention (TSI) described by Flood and Jackson [2] select a systems methodology for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. The purpose of this paper is to show how TSI when integrated with a framework created to understand the risks and opportunities can help develop strategies to minimize the risks and to take advantage of the opportunities for facing challenges in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks.

eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). In recent years, it has become a challenge to improve the recruitment and retention of highly motivated Hispanic and other minority students and to keep their interests active in the engineering discipline until their graduation so that they can join the workforce as professional engineers. The STEM - Minority Outreach and Retention Enhancement program for Transfer and Retention (STEM-MORE-TRP) and the Serving Youth in Science, Technology, engineering, & Mathematics program (SYSTEM) are designed to recruit the engineering students through a number of enrichment activities, including two-week residential engineering Workshops at a major Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in southern Texas. Both STEM-MORE-TRP and SYSTEM introduce participants to several engineering disciplines and allows them to interact with engineering faculty and staff through several activities, including information sessions, field trips, laboratory tours, and design projects. Based on the TRP and SYSTEM curriculum, The engineering, Mathematics, and Physics, Biology and Chemistry departments at a major Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in southern Texas, developed two-week long "Transfer and Retention program (TRP) workshop" and "Summer engineering workshop (SEW) during the summer at the university. Also, this provides the extent of what has worked in achieving the goals set out for the cohort. Both of the platforms funded by the U. S. Department of Education envisioned at transferring and retaining highly motivated Hispanic students into the new Bachelors of Science in systems engineering at the university. The activities were done in three different stages: recruit students and provide the theme of the program, provide a series of enrichment activities, including advising and faculty mentoring, and participation in the workshops at the university. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

Reverse bullwhip effect in pricing (RBP) refers to the amplified variability of retail prices compared to wholesale prices. RBP effect propagates from upstream towards downstream in a supply chain. The conditions for RBP depend upon the price sensitive demand functions that eventually govern the optimized retail prices. In this study, a game-theoretic framework is used to model a supply chain that consist of multiple suppliers, a wholesaler and a retailer. Multiple suppliers compete with each other following a simultaneous auction game. There are also sequential games among each supplier and the wholesaler and the retailer. Optimization along with simulation analysis has been applied to illustrate the presence of RBP effect for linear demand functions.
