As Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) gain popularity, managing their charging becomes crucial for grid stability. Smart charging programs can help utilities manage this demand and integrate more renewable energy by controlling when and how BEVs are charged. However, these programs require participation from BEV owners, who may be hesitant to freely provide such control. This study uses a discrete choice experiment (also called conjoint analysis) to measure BEV owners' willingness to participate in smart charging programs under various incentives and features. We examine two types of smart charging: Supplier-Managed Charging (SMC), which controls charging times, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), allowing BEVs to return power to the grid. In an online survey conducted via Facebook and Instagram ads, we collected 858 valid responses, with 815 responses for SMC program choices and 414 for V2G program choices. We used mixed logit (MXL) models to quantify respondents' willingness to participate. The findings indicate a general reluctance to participate in both programs without some form of incentive, with respondents being most sensitive to recurring monetary incentives. For SMC, there is also concern about ensuring sufficient battery levels in the mornings. Simulations were conducted to predict enrollment rates based on different program features. Additional data will be collected to refine the models in the coming months.

KMD clustering: robust general-purpose clustering of biological data

The noisy and high-dimensional nature of biological data has spawned advanced clustering algorithms that are tailored for specific biological datatypes. However, the performance of such methods varies greatly between datasets and they require post hoc tuning of cryptic hyperparameters. We present k minimal distance (KMD) clustering, a general-purpose method based on a generalization of single and average linkage hierarchical clustering. We introduce a generalized silhouette-like function to eliminate the cryptic hyperparameter k, and use sampling to enable application to million-object datasets. Rigorous comparisons to general and specialized clustering methods on simulated, mass cytometry and scRNA-seq datasets show consistent high performance of KMD clustering across all datasets. © 2023, The Author(s).

This paper presents a framework for portfolio selection in the transportation services, hotel and leisure, and education subsectors of the Philippine market using the mean-variance model. Using the service sector and the broader market as benchmarks, this study spans 7,670 test days from January 1, 1993, to December 31, 2022, identifying optimal risk-return factors (RRFs) of $\mathbf{0. 4}$ for transportation, 0.2 for hotel and leisure, and 0.3 for education. Furthermore, the higher percentage allocations the investors are recommended to invest in are International Container Terminal Services, Inc., Waterfront Philippines, Incorporated, and Far Eastern University, Incorporated. Paired t-test results, with p-values below 0.01 and 0.05, indicate these subsectors can outperform the service sector. The study also conducted a comparative analysis with 30-year historical data to crisis periods like the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the COVID-19 pandemic, exhibiting distinct performance trends and emphasizing the need for tailored strategies during economic disruptions. The findings of this research may provide an alternative portfolio selection model for investors seeking to optimize their investment portfolios.

This study embarked on a rigorous examination of the factors driving user satisfaction and usage behavior in the context of telehealth applications. Utilizing a well- structured Google Form survey, distributed through an array of social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Discord, Instagram, and Line, the research gathered 251 responses. The purposive sampling technique was employed to ensure that the data captured the experiences of individuals who had actively engaged with telehealth services. One hypothesis, relating to the influence of Online Reviews, was found to be unsupported. This surprising result suggests that, contrary to expectations, the opinions and reviews shared online do not significantly affect users’ satisfaction or their behavioral decisions in the context of telehealth applications. This finding highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of the factors influencing user preferences and choices in this rapidly evolving sector. Conversely, other hypotheses examining factors such as Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Perceived Reliability, Price Value, and Purchase Intention were substantiated. The positive influence of these factors on customer usage behavior underscores their significance in shaping user experiences and satisfaction within the telehealth ecosystem. Furthermore, the study posits that facilitating conditions should be closely aligned with technological advancements, as this alignment is conducive to the development of enhanced application features. This insight suggests that telehealth providers should continuously innovate and integrate advanced technologies to ensure that the facilitating conditions meet the ever-evolving needs and expectations of users.

This study reports on the fabrication and characterization of a copper oxide (CuO)-based photoactive cell. Copper was thermally evaporated onto two substrates and post-treated using chemical and thermal treatments to obtain different semiconducting types of CuO. Absorption measurements were conducted to obtain the bandgaps of CuO, which were found to be 1.51 eV and 1.21 eV, for the chemically and thermally treated CuO, respectively. Finally, a chronoamperometry test was conducted to confirm the photoresponse of the cell, which showed a doubling of output current values under light conditions compared to dark conditions.

There is a growing support from data management and analysis in the clinical and operational support at health services, impacting positively the patient outcome. Studies report that data management provides gains in productivity and raises the value of health services [1]. In this context, the interoperability of information systems (IS) at the environment of health services assumes an important role in spreading information and supporting different activities and procedures. The Brazilian government, through its Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde – SUS), aimed to support and organize the growing use of data technology in the healthcare sector, formalizing protocols and concepts of interoperability used in both public and private health systems. Through applying this MF, it is expected to identify the state of interoperability at Brazilian healthcare institutions, defining a comparative scenario that allows the alignment of efforts in its strategic development in healthcare services, benefiting users and healthcare network.

Many barriers obstruct green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) implementation, particularly in residential areas where it primarily relies on voluntary buy-in. Thus, it is necessary to determine the most effective mitigation strategies and raise attention to them. This paper considers cognitive biases in decision-making to quantitatively simulate their influence on GSI adoption behaviors in residential areas. The overall goal is to model the adoption of GSI measures in residential areas by incorporating the cognitive biases of residential-based adopters. The methods include agent-based modeling with the model framed by the theory of planned behavior. Data used in the model included survey data collected from participants who reside in the study area and values from the literature. The results show that cognitive biases, when both status quo and loss aversion biases are present, could significantly limit adoption, especially when the initial adopters are sparse. Overall, the main contribution of this work is to provide insights into how cognitive biases may impact long-term GSI implementation planning. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Global energy consumption has increased over the years due to population growth, economic expansion, and the pursuit of a higher quality of life. The building sector is a critical sector for high consumption, contributing to about 36% of the total global energy consumption in 2020. The global interest in reducing energy consumption allows different sectors to adopt renewable resources such as solar photovoltaics (PV). However, utilizing solar PV in buildings has limitations due to rooftop space constraints in newly designed buildings. Due to this limitation and continuous innovation in solar PV technologies, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) have been introduced as a potential alternative for solar PV in buildings. As such, BIPV energy performance and panel temperatures are affected by many factors such as orientation setup and technology type. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the impact of technology type (indium gallium selenide (CIGS) and monocrystalline (MONO) & orientation on BIPV energy production & module temperature. The data used for this study is based on a project completed in Dubai for BIPV in building applications. The results indicate that BIPV type and system orientation during each session significantly affect BIPV energy production and BIPV module temperature.

Relative extents, mechanisms, and kinetics of fluoride removal from synthetic groundwater by prevalent sorbents

Fluoride (F) contamination in groundwater affects millions of people across the world. Although several sorbents have been identified for low-cost F removal, the choice of the optimal sorbent is dictated by the specific chemistry of contaminated groundwater. In this contribution, eight prevalent sorbents—activated alumina (AA), calcite, hydroxyapatite-coated calcite (HCC), natural chitosan, chalk, Mg–Al–CO3 layered double hydroxide (LDH), calcined Mg–Al–CO3 LDH (cLDH), and hydrous ferric oxide (HFO)—were categorized on their relative F removal mechanisms, extents, and kinetics from a typical synthetic groundwater, representative of contaminated aquifers of North India. Initially, batch experiments containing sorbents at 4 g·L−1 were conducted at a high F concentration (2.9 mM). The dominant F removal processes were identified by aqueous- and solid-phase characterization of reaction by-products. While chalk and calcite removed F by secondary precipitation of fluorite, HCC removed F by fluorapatite precipitation, and other sorbents removed F by sorption. Depending on the immobilization mechanism identified, the F uptake kinetics on each sorbent was modeled with either pseudo-second order or generalized rate equations. Among sorptive F uptake, cLDH exhibited the highest (10−2.15 mg·g−1·h−1) and HFO showed the lowest (10−4.15 mg·g−1·h−1) rates. Fluoride removal by precipitation was the fastest with chalk at 10−1.3 (h−1) (0.16). Subsequent experiments with AA and HCC at lower initial F concentration (0.42 mM) suggested increased uptake by ∼30x and ∼7x, respectively, relative to uptake in 2.9 mM initial F systems. For AA, apart from the widely-accepted mechanism of adsorption, an unidentified F-containing surface precipitate was formed. HCC was identified as the most promising sorbent with no sludge generation. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
