The use of instant messaging (IM) application is very communal among smartphone users, as it delivers ease in interaction and communication. The speed at which technologies, growth, and expansion of networks infrastructure for high-speed data networks (e.g. wifi, 4G, etc.) are changing and the high number of IM applications are available. IM application usage is significantly escalating, also for doing illegitimate purposes, particularly to organize and coordinate criminal acts. They are practically exploited by the criminality groups involved when they target and interact with the victims, or try to run away from criminal occurrences. By systematically conducting a review to understand and to investigate IM applications topic coming from a number of scientific sources (e.g. manuscripts, metadata, files, etc.), a broader picture and opportunity to regain the valuable evidence in the investigation is academically provided. © 2018 IEEE.

Synthetic data generation is one approach for sharing individual-level data. However, to meet legislative requirements, it is necessary to demonstrate that the individuals’ privacy is adequately protected. There is no consolidated standard for measuring privacy in synthetic data. Through an expert panel and consensus process, we developed a framework for evaluating privacy in synthetic data. Our findings indicate that current similarity metrics fail to measure identity disclosure, and their use is discouraged. For differentially private synthetic data, a privacy budget other than close to zero was not considered interpretable. There was consensus on the importance of membership and attribute disclosure, both of which involve inferring personal information about an individual without necessarily revealing their identity. The resultant framework provides precise recommendations for metrics that address these types of disclosures effectively. Our findings further present specific opportunities for future research that can help with widespread adoption of synthetic data. © 2025, CC BY.

In this paper, we propose a Multi-Criteria Reverse Auction (MCRA) approach based on the Composition of Probabilistic Preferences (CPP) multi-criteria method. In CPP method, the evaluations of alternatives in each criterion are converted into possible values by using a triangular distribution, allowing imprecision to be considered. The evaluations of the alternatives in each criterion are converted into a vector of probabilities of each alternative being the best (or the worst) in the criterion. Then, the measure of preference for any alternative, considering all the criteria, is given by the composition of its respective probabilities, not being necessary to provide intercriteria information, which is an advantage of this method over the others multi-criteria methods regarding its applicability to real life-problems. The MCRA approach was structured to support Brazilian public reverse auctions. An example of application was performed to demonstrate its applicability, demonstrating that the proposed approach can be easily incorporated into the Brazilian public reverse auctions. The MCRA approach improves the quality of public purchasing decision by assuring the consideration of multiple criteria in the evaluation phase and providing better results for both parties (buyer and sellers).

There are significant Points of Intersection and Overlaps between Project / program Managers (PMs) and the Chief systems Engineer (CSE) / systems Engineers (SE). In some projects, the PM is the Technical Lead, or the CSE is the PM, regardless of Role, the project leader is responsible for project success through adherence to the "Golden Triangle". However, if Roles and Responsibilities are not clearly defined early in the project lifecycle when both professions are present, this can lead to unproductive tensions between PMs and the CSE that can be an impediment to project / program performance. Key sources of unproductive tensions are the lack of integrated planning, lack of or unclear communications, unclear definition roles and authority, and conflicting practices between the two overlapping roles. We address relevant causes of unproductive tensions, highlight the importance of collaboration between project management and systems engineering, describe the points of intersection and overlaps in the core competencies between the disciplines, as described by their respective profession organizations (PMI & INCOSE), and explore the Overlaps between the educational curricula for an M.S. in Project management and an M.S. in systems engineering. We then suggest promising practices for enhancing effective integration between the two disciplines with the aim of improving project and program performance. © 2017 PICMET.

Indonesia is one of the countries whose people are most affected by the 2019 corona virus (COVID-19). When the corona virus spreads faster, the Indonesian government imposed large-scale social restrictions in big cities to villages in Indonesia. With the changing situation in carrying out work activities during this pandemic, it will certainly affect the quality of organization in companies and the quality of education in schools and colleges. In order to identify all processes in teaching and learning activities that are running well or not, schools need to monitor and measure employee performance. Key performance indicators (KPIs) are generally used as benchmarks to determine how well a company's performance can be represented by employee performance. In this study, the key performance indicator preparation process was carried out through the stages of designing a questionnaire, distributing questionnaires to employees in educational institutions, conducting factor analysis and then developing a KPI model. The output is in the form of a KPI model that can be used as a reference in the formation of KPIs in educational institutions, namely Y = 5,360 + 1,380 X1-1, 068 X3.

Most of the existing steady state detection approaches are designed for univariate signals. For multivariate signals, the univariate approach is often applied to each process variable and the system is claimed to be steady once all signals are steady, which is computationally inefficient and also not accurate. The article proposes an efficient online method for multivariate steady state detection. It estimates the covariance matrices using two different approaches, namely, the mean-squared-deviation and mean-squared-successive-difference. To avoid the usage of a moving window, the process means and the two covariance matrices are calculated recursively through exponentially weighted moving average. A likelihood ratio test is developed to compare the difference of the two covariance matrices and to detect the steady state. The intensive numerical studies and real case study show that the proposed method can accurately detect the steady state of a multivariate system. © Copyright 2018 ASME.

Bitcoin’s future carbon footprint

The carbon footprint of Bitcoin has drawn wide attention, but Bitcoin’s long-term impact on the climate remains uncertain. Here we present a framework to overcome uncertainties in previous estimates and project Bitcoin’s electricity consumption and carbon footprint in the long term. If we assume Bitcoin’s market capitalization grows in line with the one of gold, we find that the annual electricity consumption of Bitcoin may increase from 50 to 400 TWh between 2020 and 2100. The future carbon footprint of Bitcoin strongly depends on the decarbonization pathway of the electricity sector. If the electricity sector achieves carbon neutrality by 2050, Bitcoin’s carbon footprint has peaked already. However, in the business-as-usual scenario, emissions sum up to 2 gigatons until 2100, an amount comparable to 6% of global emissions in 2018. Therefore, we also discuss policy instruments to reduce Bitcoin’s future carbon footprint. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

For damage detection, this research article discusses an easy-to-compute damage index derived from the governing dynamic of the structure that has potential practical application in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The research uses simplified structural models to explore the sensitivity of the index to damages, to compare the index performance with a traditional but popular damage detection method, and to understand the local/global predictive capability of the index. The research uses two simple models, namely, single- and two-degree-of-freedom systems. The results suggest that the damage index is local, that can only monitor damages occurring near the points of measurements, but it is sensitive to damages, unlike the natural frequency, which is global but less sensitive.

Understanding the reliability of engineering methods is crucial for its adoption and deployment. This research focuses on the reliability of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) method via the use of the F statistic for damage detection. To the author best knowledge, the method is rather classic but its realibility has not been discussed in the context of a large data size. Priory, the research anticipates that the accuracy is a function of the damage level. In this study, we evaluate 3500 cases with five levels of structural integrity, namely, healthy condition and damaged conditions with 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% damage levels. The dataset is established via a numerical analysis of a seven degree-of-freedom system loaded with a concentrated dynamic force with random magnitude. A spring on the system is reduced in its stiffness to simulate damages. Our significant findings are the following: it is challenging for the PSD-based method to differentiate the healthy condition from the damaged conditions when the damage level is small. However, the reliability is high at 95% probability when the structural integrity has dropped by five percent.

Although tuberculosis is a curable disease and, in most cases, with low cost drugs, its mortality still is a global concern. This facts turns our attention to management issues and the difficulties related to retrieving data of interest that are powdered on many applications. This work presents a semantic web approach to achieve functional and semantic interoperability between two applications in State of São Paulo that contain tuberculosis data. By combining a theoretical-practical development, the geolocalization tool created is a proof of concept that could help managers to take strategic decisions and develop better health policies by showing the distribution of tuberculosis cases across the state. This work stands out the importance of working in solutions that could improve the quality of data in health field and daily activities of health professionals.
