In recent years, many design approaches have been developed for automated manufacturing systems in the fields of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS), holonic manufacturing systems (HMS), and multi-agent systems (MAS). One of the principle reasons for these developments has been to enhance the recongurability of a manufacturing system;allowing it to readily adapt to changes over time. However, to date, recongurability assessment has been limited. Hence, the efficacy of these design approaches remains quantitatively inconclusive. More recently, a systematic approach to reconfigurability measurement based upon the concepts of reconfiguration "potential" and reconfiguration "ease" has been developed using axiomatic design and design structure matrices respectively. The measures of reconfiguration potential called production degrees of freedom were specifically used to calculate production paths of a product line through a reconfigurable manufacturing system. This paper rearticulates the previous scalar-based calculation in terms of a axiomatic design matrix-based development founded in graph theory for three major benefits. First, this approach establishes a link between the RMS literature and graph theory where path enumeration has long been associated with network reliability and resilience. Second, the approach bases its measures strictly on the evolving system architecture variables in both function and form. In so doing, it roots itself in the established engineering design concept of the axiomatic design knowledge base for large flexible systems. Finally, the formulaic expressions lend themselves to significant computational savings.

Planning for water quality management is important for facilitating sustainable socio-economic development;however, the planning is also complicated by a variety of uncertainties and nonlinearities. In this study, an interval-parameter fuzzy robust nonlinear programming (IFRNP) model was developed for water quality management to deal with such difficulties. The developed model incorporated interval nonlinear programming (INP) and fuzzy robust programming (FRP) methods within a general optimization framework. The developed IFRNP model not only could explicitly deal with uncertainties represented as discrete interval numbers and fuzzy membership functions, but also was able to deal with nonlinearities in the objective function.

Interdependency among critical infrastructure (CI) is an increasing phenomenon. The 21st century has been defined by events that have changed individuals' perceptions of what CI is and its risks and vulnerabilities. One of the major critical infrastructures is the energy sector as described by public policy, and oil is an important component of this sector. This paper explores the relationships between oil and other infrastructures. We argue that the relationship between oil and other systems has changed the structure of the oil industry. How to manage this new structure is an emerging issue that requires attention from a systems approach. Whether oil is in its crude form or refined form, its value cannot be minimized due to its various applications. Oil and its derivatives are not an independent infrastructure;they are interconnected to other forms of energy and other infrastructures. These interconnections have increased risk and vulnerability from hostile nations, terrorists, criminals, and incompetent operators. We conclude that oil is critical to the well-being of humanity and yet is so fragile that it can be affected by cascading events from other critical infrastructure due coupling and pervasive computing technologies.
