This paper applies the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition principle to the mixed integer programming based Brazilian long term power expansion planning model. Since no formulation closely resembling the specific details we have to address could be found in the literature, we had to impose significant modifications to a Dantzig-Wolfe based reformulation and solution algorithm previously suggested for a power planning application. As a result, minimum mandatory thermal power plants operation levels could be imposed and were adequately dealt with within a column generation scheme. The solution algorithm we implemented initially suffered from severe stabilization problems. These were eventually settled through a nonstandard procedure we suggested and the algorithm then proved quite effective. Indeed, it was capable of solving very large scale real world instances of our planning problem, to an optimality guarantee of 1% or less. For some of these instances, such a guarantee is currently out of reach of state-of-the-art commercial optimization software.

Cost of quality (COQ) evaluations are conducted to improve or maintain the level of quality of products or services while decreasing the overall cost of quality. It has been employed in different manufacturing as well as service industries, which in turn has resulted in successful reduction of quality costs. The objective of this study is to review and compile the existing literature on cost of quality evaluation in service industries. Some of the primary service industries that are observed for this study are utilities, banks, financial services, and service business beside others. This paper presents a State-of-the-Art-Matrix (SAM) on the COQ evaluation utilized in different service industries and compares it with a State-of-the-Art-Matrix on the COQ evaluation utilized in other industries. This study will help researchers to have a better understanding of the COQ assessments in service industries. Copyright, American Society for engineering management, 2011.

Daylight's correlated color temperature (CCT) varies throughout the day and conflicts with existing fixed-CCT artificial light sources, delivering poor color rendering for users. A prototype blended-CCT LED lamp demonstrates a simple control concept for matching daylight variations.

Cost of Quality evaluation has become popular in many industries to decrease cost and maintain the quality of products and services. Cost of Quality evaluation is easier to perform in manufacturing industries compared to service industries. The cost of quality of service is more difficult and challenging to evaluate. Cost of quality has been evaluated in some service industries like the water utility. The electric utility industry is one of the more important service industries in industrialized countries where the cost of quality evaluation has not been performed. The objective of this study is to examine the major problems of cost of quality evaluation in the electric utility industry. This study presents a literature review on the major problems of cost of quality evaluation in service industries and compares it with manufacturing industries. Predicting Stock Prices Using Polynomial Classifiers: The Case of Dubai Financial Market

Predicting stock price movements is a challenging task for academicians and practitioners. In particular, forecasting price movements in emerging markets seems to be more elusive because they are usually more volatile often accompa-nied by thin trading-volumes and they are susceptible to more manipulation compared to mature markets. Technical analysis of stocks and commodities has become a science on its own;quantitative methods and techniques have been applied by many practitioners to forecast price movements. Lagging and sometimes leading technical indicators pro-vide rich quantitative tools for traders and investors in their attempt to gain advantage when making investment or trading decisions. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been used widely in predicting stock prices because of their capability in capturing the non-linearity that often exists in price movements. Recently, Polynomial Classifiers (PC) have been applied to various recognition and classification application and showed favorable results in terms of recog-nition rates and computational complexity as compared to ANN. In this paper, we present two prediction models for predicting securities’ prices. The first model was developed using back propagation feed forward neural networks. The second model was developed using polynomial classifiers (PC), as a first time application for PC to be used in stock prices prediction. The inputs to both models were identical, and both models were trained and tested on the same data. The study was conducted on Dubai Financial Market as an emerging market and applied to two of the market’s leading stocks. In general, both models achieved very good results in terms of mean absolute error percentage. Both models show an average error around 1.5% predicting the next day price, an average error of 2.5% when predicting second day price, and an average error of 4% when predicted the third day price.

Main topics are the development and the build-up of an 18ton hybrid truck with a parallel hybrid drivetrain. With this truck it is possible to drive up to 3 kilometers in the pure electric driving mode. In this R&D Project the engineering Center Steyr, a company of MAGNA Powertain has developed a hybrid truck with an integrated motor generator (IMG) including a clutch system for pure electric driving. Also a Li-Ion power battery, electrified traction voltage auxiliaries (steering pump, air compressor and climate compressor) and a cooling system for the new power electric components. The beginning of the paper shows a detailed layout of the developed hybrid truck. Chapter two shows the developed simulation model which is used for the dimensioning and for detailed simulations of hybrid drivetrains. To simulate thermal effects, a co-simulation environment between a longitudinal dynamics and thermal management software is applied. The longitudinal dynamics software calculates the propulsion power which determines the thermal load of the components. Particular attention was given to the electrical and thermal behavior of the traction battery. The coupling of longitudinal and thermal simulation enables a realistic computation of the energy use, since the effects such as the change of efficiency by temperature and load can be taken into account. This behavior has a high influence in the development and tuning of the vehicle's components and operating strategy. Therefore a special focus is given to the operation strategy of hybrid commercial vehicles. Finally an application shows simulated data of the hybrid commercial vehicle on standardized driving cycles and also cycles with a high proportion of urban driving. These simulations show a meaningful influence on the temperature of the components, especially the battery. This paper considers the problem of radar waveform design in the presence of colored Gaussian disturbance under a Peak to Aver- age power Ratio (PAR) and an energy constraint. Firstly, we focus on the selection of the radar signal optimizing the Signal to Noise Power Ratio (SNR) for a given target Doppler frequency (Algorithm 1). Then, we devise its phase quantized version (Algorithm 2), which forces the waveform phase to lie within a finite alphabet. Both the problems are formulated in terms of NP-hard non-convex quadratic optimization programs;in order to solve them, we resort to Semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation and randomization techniques, providing provable-quality sub-optimal solutions with a polynomial time computational complexity. Finally, we analyze the performance in terms of detection capability and robustness with respect to Doppler shifts.

The Ship to Shore Connector (SSC), a replacement for the Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC), is the first government-led design of a ship in over 15 years. This paper will discuss the changes that a government-led design presents to the design approach, including schedule, organization structure, and design methodology. While presenting challenges, a government-led design also afforded the opportunity to implement a new technique for assessing various systems and ship alternatives, setbased design (SBD). The necessity for implementing SBD was the desire to design SSC from a blank sheet of paper and the need for a replacement craft in a short time frame. That is, the LCACs need to be replaced and consequently the preliminary design phase of the SSC program will only be 12 months. This paper will describe SBD and how it was applied to the SSC, the challenges that the program faced, and an assessment of the new methodology, along with recommendations that future design programs should consider when adopting this approach. © 2011, American Society of Naval Engineers.
