In real-world applications of mobile robots, collision avoidance is of critical importance. Typically, global motion planning in constrained environments is addressed through high-level control schemes. However, additionally integrating local collision avoidance into robot motion control offers significant advantages. For instance, it reduces the reliance on heuristics and conservatism that can arise from a two-stage approach separating local collision avoidance and control. Moreover, using model predictive control (MPC), a robot’s full potential can be harnessed by considering jointly local collision avoidance, the robot’s dynamics, and actuation constraints. In this context, the present paper focuses on obstacle avoidance for wheeled mobile robots, where both the robot’s and obstacles’ occupied volumes are modeled as ellipsoids. To this end, a computationally efficient overlap test, that works for arbitrary ellipsoids, is conducted and novelly integrated into the MPC framework. We propose a particularly efficient implementation tailored to robots moving in the plane. The functionality of the proposed obstacle-avoiding MPC is demonstrated for two exemplary types of kinematics by means of simulations. A hardware experiment using a real-world wheeled mobile robot shows transferability to reality and real-time applicability. The general computational approach to ellipsoidal obstacle avoidance can also be applied to other robotic systems and vehicles as well as three-dimensional scenarios. © 2024, CC BY.

With steadily increasing performance of computers, agent-based modeling has evolved from an analysis method for qualitative phenomena to strategy for quantitative decision support. With this orientation, however, the modeler faces new challenges during implementation. In particular, an appropriate simulation tool must feature the combination of data and model flexibility, process reproducibility, performance and portability. While existing simulators often do not sufficiently cover these features, it is also not sustainable to generally implement models from scratch. In this work, we want to present the idea of simulation templates as a compromise between the two strategies. We show, on the example of our Agent-Based Template and two use cases, the importance of the described challenges and how the simulation template concept supports solving them. We aim to generally promote the idea of developing a customized template, which, as a layer between simulator and from-the-scratch implementation, combines the advantages of both approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

Superhydrophobic ceramic membrane coupled with a biphasic solvent for efficient CO_(2)capture

An innovative strategy was proposed by integration of membrane contactor(MC)with biphasic solvent for efficient CO_(2) capture from flue *** accessible fly ash-based ceramic membrane(CM)underwent hydrophobic modification through silane grafting,followed by fluoroalkylsilane decoration,to prepare the superhydrophobic membrane(CSCM).The CSCM significantly improved resistance to wetting by the biphasic solvent,consisting of amine(DETA)and sulfolane(TMS).Morphological characterizations and chemical analysis revealed the notable enhancements in pore structure and hydrophobic chemical groups for the modified *** of wetting/bubbling behavior based on static wetting theory referred the liquid entry pressure(LEP)of CSCM increased by 20 kPa compared to pristine *** with traditional amine solvents,the biphasic solvent presented the expected phase *** experiments demonstrated that the CO_(2) capture efficiency of the biphasic solvent increased by 7%,and the electrical energy required for desorption decreased by 32%.The 60-h continuous testing and supplemental characterization of used membrane confirmed the excellent adaptability and durability of the *** study provides a potential approach for accessing hydrophobic ceramic membranes and biphasic solvents for industrial CO_(2) capture.

To protect the environment and lower carbon dioxide emissions, conventional fossil-fuel generators tend to be replaced by renewable generation. The volatile and uncertain renewable generation, as well as the reduced proportion of conventional fossil-fuel generators, causes challenges for power systems in terms of peak shaving. The equipment of energy storage is an important solution for the challenges. This paper proposes a distributionally robust method that coordinatedly plans renewable generation, transmission, and energy storage, minimizing the sum of investment and operation costs including carbon taxes. The operation cost is the optimal value of an operation optimization problem. Wasserstein-metric-based ambiguity set is established to deal with the possible inexactness of the empirical distribution of renewable generation and load uncertainties, based on which the worst-case expectation of operation cost is formulated. By calculating the Lipschitz constant of the operation cost function, the planning model comes down to mixed-integer linear programming. The case study in the IEEE 30-bus system demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022 Owner/Author.

In this work, we consider the physical layer security in short-packet communications, where a full-duplex (FD) receiver receives information signals from a source while generating artificial noise (AN) to confuse an eavesdropper. Taking into account the finite blocklength coding and the self-interference (SI) in FD mode, we derive new approximation closed-form expression for the secrecy throughput. Moreover, we analyze the asymptotic secrecy throughput in two distinct scenarios, i.e., high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime and infinite blocklength coding, to gain more insights. Our examination illustrates the correctness of our expressions and shows how the critical system variables affect the secrecy throughput. © 2023 The Authors

In this paper, we investigate the use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to model agent behavior in agent-based models. We hereby focus on use cases in which an agent's decision-making process may only be modeled from data, but it is infeasible to be modeled causally. In these situations, meta-models are often the only way to quantitatively parameterize the agent-based model. However, methods that capture not only deterministic relationships but also stochastic uncertainty are rare. Since GANs are well known for their property to generate pseudo-random-numbers for complex distributions, we explore pros and cons of this strategy for modeling a delay-process in a large-scale agent-based SARS-CoV-2 simulation model.

With the increasing role of distributed message systems (DMS) represented by Kafka in handling large-scale data streams, it is critical to improve system performance by optimizing configuration parameters in different production environments. Due to the target system possessing numerous configuration parameters and the complex interactions between them, parameter optimization becomes a complex and time-consuming process that relies heavily on human effort and an iterative trial-and-error approach. At present, this type of configuration parameter problem has been classified as the Configuration of Distributed Message systems (CDMS) problem, for which the goal is to obtain the optimal set of parameters for achieving the best performance. In order to deal with this complex problem, an automatic optimization method is proposed in this paper, which combines an automatic script-based deployment and running framework with an improved Genetic Algorithm (GA) in cooperation with the Random Forest (RF) and statistical methods, named the Directional-Mutation Genetic Algorithm (DMGA). The framework and algorithm are designed to find the best configuration efficiently, obtaining optimal parameters accurately without human supervision. Actual results of comparison experiments based on the Kafka system show that the DMGA algorithm significantly improves the data throughput performance of Kafka, and its optimization speed is more efficient than the basic GA, highlighting its potential to quickly optimize Kafka's operational efficiency in different scenarios.
