Computational simulation studies utilize data to assist in developing models, including conducting verification and validation (V V). Input modeling and V V are, historically, difficult topics to teach and they are often only offered as a cursory introduction, leaving the practitioner to pick up the skills on the job. This problem of teaching is often a result of the inability to introduce realistic datasets into class examples because 'real world' data tends to come in poorly formed datasets. In this paper, a case is made that teaching data analytics can help ease this problem. Data analytics is an approach that includes data wrangling, data mining, and exploratory analyses through visualization and machine learning. We provide a brief discussion on how data analytics has been be applied to computational modeling and simulation in the context of verification and validation, but also for input modeling as that gives a basis for validation. © 2021 IEEE.

There is an increasing concern of face privacy protection along with the wide application of big media data and social networks due to free online data release. Although some pioneering works obtained some achievements, they are not sufficient enough for sanitizing the sensitive identity information. In this paper, we propose a generative approach to de-identify face images yet preserving the non-sensitive information for data reusability. To ensure a high privacy level, we introduce a large-margin model for the synthesized new identities by keeping a safe distance with both the input identity and existing identities. Besides, we show that our face de-identification operation follows the (Formula Presented)-differential privacy rule which can provide a rigorous privacy notion in theory. We evaluate the proposed approach using the vggface dataset and compare with several state-of-the-art methods. The results show that our approach outperforms previous solutions for effective face privacy protection while preserving the major utilities. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

For humans and automation to collaborate and perform tasks effectively, all participants need access to a common representation of potentially relevant situational information, or context. This article describes a general framework for building context-aware interactive intelligent systems that comprises three major functions: (1) capture human-system interactions and infer implicit context;(2) analyze and predict user intent and goals;and (3) provide effective augmentation or mitigation strategies to improve performance, such as delivering timely, personalized information and recommendations, adjusting levels of automation, or adapting visualizations. Our goal is to develop an approach that enables humans to interact more intuitively and naturally with automation that is reusable across domains by modeling context and algorithms at a higher level of abstraction. We first provide an operational definition of context and discuss challenges and opportunities for exploiting context. We then describe our current work toward a general platform that supports developing context-aware applications in a variety of domains. We then explore an example use case illustrating how our framework can facilitate personalized collaboration within an information management and decision support tool. This paper describes how to use Sharable Content Object Reference Model 2004 and other Advanced Distributed Learning training methodologies to 1) establish methods for combining Computer Based Training and simulation Based Training and 2) establish hybrid architecture mechanisms for the synergy of Sharable Content Object Reference Model-compliant Learning Content Management systems, including the new Experience Application Programming Interface, and High Level Architecture-Distributed Interactive simulation compliant Learning Management systems. Accomplishing the first objective will determine effective strategies and techniques for combining Computer Based Training and simulation Based Training. Accomplishing the second objective will show effective and efficient architecting strategies and tradeoffs for combining Sharable Content Object Reference Model-compliant and High Level Architecture/Distributed Interactive simulation-compliant Learning Management systems including the new Experience Application Programming Interface. Both objectives were met in the accomplishment of this demonstration. The first objective of linking and tracing task learning for computer-based and simulation-based training was achieved using the "chat room" simulation. Likewise, the second objective of showing effective and efficient strategies accurately and successfully employed the Experience Application Programming Interface schema and specifications. More research is recommended in this objective to broaden the concept using more examples from other domains.

An attempt is made to propose a data-driven approach for detecting islanding in large-scale power systems. The method utilizes data collected by phasor measurement units (PMUs) to develop an equivalent model of the system. In this model, the system is represented by multiple centers of inertia (COIs) linked to a central point known as the center of gravity (COG) through fictitious reactances. These reactances, which are interpreted as the electrical distances between the local COIs and the COG, serve as a valuable indicator for detecting islanding. The occurrence of islanding can be identified by comparing the temporal trends of electrical distance variations across different areas. The effectiveness of the proposed methodologies is evaluated using simulated data from the 73-bus IEEE test system. © 2024 IEEE.

Current cloud data centers are fully virtualized for service consolidations and power/energy reduction. Although virtualization could reduce real time power and overall energy consumption, the energy characteristics of hypervisors hosting different workloads are not well profiled and understood. In this paper, we investigate the power and energy characteristics of mainstream hypervisors and container engine, i.e., VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM, XenServer and Docker, on five different platforms (two mainstream 2U rack servers, one emerging ARM64 server, one desktop server, and one laptop) with hundreds of hours' power measures. We use both computing intensive and mixed web server-database workloads to explore the power and energy characteristics of different hypervisors. Extensive experiment results of four workload levels (very light, light, fair, and very heavy workload) demonstrate that hypervisors expose different power and energy characteristics. We find that: (1) Hypervisors expose different power and energy consumption on the same hardware running same workloads. (2) Although mainstream hypervisors have different energy efficiencies aligned with different workload types and workload levels, there is no single hypervisor that outperforms all other hypervisors on all platforms in terms of power or energy consumptions. (3) Although container virtualization is considered as light-weight virtualization in terms of implementation and maintenance, it is not essentially more power efficient than traditional virtualization technology. (4) ARM64 server does have lower power consumption, but they finish computing jobs with longer execution time and sometimes consume more energy. And ARM64 servers has medium energy consumption per database operations for mixed workloads. The results presented in this paper provide useful insights to system designers, as well as data center operators for power-aware workload placement and virtual machine scheduling. © 2016 IEEE.

Abstract Generalized B-splines have been employed as geometric modeling and numerical simu- lation tools for isogeometric analysis （IGA for short）. However, the previous models used in IGA, such as trigonometric generalized B-splines or hyperbolic generalized B-splines, are not the unified mathematical representation of conics and polynomial parametric curves/surfaces. In this paper, a unified approach to construct the generalized non-uniform B-splines over the space spanned by {α（t）,β（t）,ξ（t）, η（t）, 1, t,……. , tn-4} is proposed, and the corresponding isogeometric analysis framework for PDE solving is also studied. Compared with the NURBS-IGA method, the proposed frameworks have several advantages such as high accuracy, easy-to-compute derivatives and integrals due to the non-rational form. Furthermore, with the proposed spline models, isogeometric analysis can be performed on the computational domain bounded by transcendental curves/surfaces, such as the involute of circle, the helix/helicoid, the catenary/catenoid and the cycloid. Several numerical examples for isogeometrie heat conduction problems are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The paper summarizes the results of several analyses performed by The Aerospace Corporation to assess the effect of constellation size and number of orbit planes (3 or 6) on GPS performance. Some of the trades include constellations varying in size from 21 to 36 satellites in both 3 and 6 orbit planes with up to 3 satellite failures. Other trades have focused primarily on 27- and 30-satellite constellations in both 3 and 6 orbit planes with failures up to two satellites. The measures of effectiveness include availability of accuracy, robustness of the constellation to satellite failure and downtime, and constellation management flexibility. These metrics are examined for their impacts on a variety of users, including users in urban environments, in mountainous terrain, and in foliage. The measures of effectiveness are also examined for military aviation users, civil aviation users, users relying upon Receiver Augmented Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) for integrity, and high accuracy users that perform in-receiver estimation of troposphere delay. The analyses include constellation management and replenishment issues, such as the ability of the constellations to support launching two satellites from a single booster (dual manifest), and the impact that a transition from six orbit planes to three orbit planes could have on user performance during the transition. This study was conducted in response to inquiries made by the GPS Independent Review Team and was sponsored by the Air Force Global Positioning systems Wing of the Air Force Space & Missile systems Center.

In a attempt to develop an efficient approach for the electromechanical analysis of laminated piezoelectric structures, an exact transfer matrix methodology is presented. The related equations for a three dimensional piezoelectric and elastic lamina are developed based on the Stroh formalism [1,2]. Solution for the vibrations of linear piezoelectric laminated plates is obtained by extending the Stroh formalism to the generalized plane strain vibrations of piezoelectric materials [3,4]. The laminated plate consists of homogeneous orthotropic electro-elastic three layered rectangular plate with horizontal dimensions Lxand Lyand with arbitrary thickness (figure 1). © 2013 Advanced Electromagnetics Symposium. This paper proposes a rapid evaluation scheme of pipeline architectures using phase-accurate simulation with only delay model and trace. With latency information for every stage, we can decide if an instruction in one stage can proceed to the next stage or if an instruction can be issued for each cycle without evaluating the value for registers. Branch target becomes available with trace generated by fast instruction set simulation. Fast verification time becomes possible because instruction set simulation is performed only once. © 2003 IEEE.
