Prediction of the magnitude of pressure surge in aircraft fuel systems is important from the stand point of designing systems which will not exceed the maximum surge pressure allowed and determining limit pressure so that light-weight systems can be designed, as stated in Gartenberg2. Since aircraft refueling systems are relatively low-pressure, the formation of gaseous products, cavitation, introduces severe non-linearity not only in the form of damped pressures but also lower propagation speed. The linear relation between bulk modulus, pressure, and density that exists in high pressure systems is made non-linear by the formation of gases. This paper describes a simulation method for predicting pressure surges in aircraft fuel systems that is suitable for engineering purposes. A model for gas formation has been developed. The dynamic simulation is a relatively fine, one-dimensional, discrete distribution of the fluid solved with MacCormack's predictor corrector technique. The simulation results are compared to actual fuel rig tests. There is a step-by-step description of how the simulation model was tuned to correlate with measured data. Some examples of practical use of the model for actual simulations used for fuel system design are included. © 2011 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Pipelines are widely used to transport fluids over long distances. When a pipeline is subjected to variable internal pressure and external disturbances such as subsidence, structural damage caused by the presence of defects can intensify. Since 2010, the use of artificial intelligence has become a crucial means of solving complex problems, even for interpretation and decision-making using machine learning tools. The main aim of this paper is to use an artificial neural network to predict the failure of a cyclically loaded pipeline with a dent defect. A feedforward neural network has been created to predict the state of a dented pipeline using data from several experiments based on geometric and material properties and cyclic fluid pressure. It enables rapid detection of faults such as plain indentations for maintenance operatives, speeding up intervention time and reducing material and environmental damage. Two evaluation criteria were taken into account for the different models in order to select the optimum architecture in terms of accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

Aiming at the problem of periodic interference in flight simulation turntables, a design method of full-form dynamic linearization model free adaptive control (FFDL-MFAC) is proposed. An equivalent dynamic linearized data model is established at each dynamic operating point of the closed-loop system to achieve adaptive control of the nonlinear system, which gives the controller the advantage of online adjustment of internal parameters and improves the robustness of the control system. Aiming at the difficulty of parameter adjustment caused by the increase of dimension of the pseudo partial derivative matrix, a PID-like MFAC parameter adjustment method is proposed, which greatly reduces the difficulty of parameter adjustment of the model-free adaptive controller. The simulation results of MFAC and PID show that the designed FFDL-MFAC controller outperforms the conventional PID in tracking command signals and suppressing periodic disturbances. © 2023 IEEE.

Combined approach of computational fluid dynamics for gas phase and discrete element method for particles (CFD-DEM) is used to exhibit the formation of expanded bed in gas fluidisation of fine ellipsoids. The results illustrate that in the start-up stage, the bulk disconnects into two major bulks with a lowest contact force on the axial direction, especially for flat and elongated particles. The positions of the lowest point of contact force slightly change with time for oblate and prolate particles, but it moves smoothly from bottom to top for spheres. A slower gas introduction process has a mildest change in bed height (porosity). The fractures between major bulks gradually disappear when the cohesive forces become smaller. In the transition stage, when aspect ratio deviates from 1.0, the pressure drop fluctuation significantly increases. In the stable stage, when the aspect ratio decreases or increases from 1.0, the contact forces and van der Waals forces increases, and the particle-fluid forces become less uniformly distribution in the beds. Ellipsoidal particles undergo an orientation rearrangement during the expansion process. © 2018 8th World Congress on Particle Technology 2018: Keynotes and Plenaries. All rights reserved.

Inter-area low-frequency oscillations with poor damping have long presented challenges in interconnected power systems, leading to the development of various damping control strategies. This paper introduces a novel method for designing Optimally Distributed Damping Control (ODDC) to enhance the damping ratios of critical inter-area modes while minimizing communication links, thereby increasing system stability. The non-convex nature of structural constraints adds complexity to identifying the optimal communication topology among control units in distributed frameworks. To address this, a computationally efficient Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) relaxation technique is applied to solve the non-convex ODDC problem. Additionally, a combined clustering framework is proposed to dynamically update controller coefficients based on mode identification using wide-area measurement data, ensuring effective damping of inter-area oscillations. The IEEE New England 39-bus system, simulated in MATLAB, serves as the validation platform, demonstrating the ODDC method's effectiveness. simulation results indicate that an optimal distributed configuration with a single communication link substantially enhances small-signal stability. Moreover, the adaptive updating module successfully provides new coefficients to restore adequate damping ratios when pre-designed controllers lose effectiveness under varying operating conditions. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This paper establishes support for a unified Verification, Validation, and Accreditation (VV&A) approach to serve as the one "common and cross-cutting" voice for VV&A across the Department of Defense (DoD) and Military Services. modeling and simulation (M&S) management has been transforming for over a year. Various communities enabled by M&S have been identified at the DoD- and Service-levels. Transforming M&S management has brought about coordination amongst and between the communities to support common services, data, and tools. These common and cross-cutting areas include the standardization of processes, development of best practices, and the utility and application of M&S that together provide overarching benefits to all communities. Currently, M&S management decisions are made by committees through a process of proposals, presentations, and interviews. The VV&A leaders from the DoD, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps have collaborated on this paper to reaffirm the need for VV&A by all communities, to identify the need for one voice to speak for VV&A to all communities, and to offer solutions for the road ahead.

Design is the creative process by which our understanding of logic and science is joined with our understanding of human needs and wants to conceive and refine artifacts that serve specific human purposes. Design is central to the practice of systems engineering and systems engineers understand that design is a creative, iterative, decision-making process. In this paper, we provide an overview of design from the perspective of the systems engineer. We review the steps in the design process and consider the characteristic activities, techniques, and tools of systems engineering in terms of how these activities support the central mission of systems design. We briefly discuss some of the major influences on current design research. Of particular interest is the axiomatic theory of design developed from the perspective of manufacturing engineering, which ultimately leads to a set of design principles, rules, and practices which are embodied in Design for Manufacture (DFM). DFM is a systems approach to improving the competitiveness of a manufacturing enterprise by developing products that are easier, faster, and less expensive to make, while maintaining required standards of functionality, quality, and marketability. We review the systems engineering philosophy underlying DFM—and is broader interpretation as concurrent or simultaneous engineering, or integrated product development—and define some of the strategies, techniques, and tools currently used to implement this philosophy in industry. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Impacts of meteorology and emission variations on the heavy air pollution episode in North China around the 2020 Spring Festival

Based on the Weather Research and Forecasting model and the Models-3 community multi-scale air quality model(WRF-CMAQ),this study analyzes the impacts of meteorological conditions and changes in air pollutant emissions on the heavy air pollution episode occurred over North China around the 2020 Spring Festival(January to Februray 2020).Regional reductions in air pollutant emissions required to eliminate the PM2.5 heavy pollution episode are also *** results found that meteorological conditions for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and surrounding"2+26"cities are the worst during the heavy pollution episode around the 2020 Spring Festival as compared with two other typical heavy pollution episodes that occurred after ***,because of the substantial reductions in air pollutant emissions in the"2+26"cities in recent years,and the32%extra reduction in emissions during January to February 2020 compared with the baseline emission levels of the autumn and winter of 2019 to 2020,the maximum PM2.5 level during this heavy pollution episode around the 2020 Spring Festival was much lower than that in the other two typical ***,these emission reductions are still not enough to eliminate regional heavy pollution *** with the actual emission levels during January to February 2020,a 20%extra reduction in air pollutant emissions in the"2+26"cities(or a 45%extra reduction compared with baseline emission levels of the autumn and winter of 2019 to 2020)could help to generally eliminate regionwide severe pollution episodes,and avoid heavy pollution episodes that last three or more consecutive days in Beijing;a 40%extra reduction in emissions(or a 60%extra reduction compared with baseline emission levels of the autumn and winter of 2019 to 2020)could help to generally eliminate regionwide and continuous heavy pollution *** analysis finds that during the clean period after the heavy pollution episode around the 2020 Spring Festival,the regionwide

This paper presents an analysis of a system consisting of a PV collector augmented with two reflectors to obtain more electrical energy. The model provides the possibility to predict the solar energy received by the panel in the day. To enhance the amount of solar radiation on the fixed photovoltaic Panel we daily changed the tilt angle of the two reflectors to get them in an optimal position which depends on the angle of elevation of the sun, the azimuth angle for typical days throughout the year. In this work, we calculated the electrical efficiency of the photovoltaic panel in two cases, without and with reflectors in the optimal position. The study is made on the site of Tetouan (longitude = − 5°, latitude = 35.25°) for a daily variation (from sunset to sunrise) relatively for the days 21 March 21 Mai 21 June 21 September and 21 December, (the spring and autumn equinox and summer and winter solstices), days considered clear sky type. © 2022, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
