The Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism is a framework which supports specification of discrete event models in a hierarchical, modular form. Associated with the formalism is a method which transforms a non-modular model to modular one. The method is a theoretical basis for the exchange of information between heterogeneous simulators which interoperate together. The High Level Architecture (HLA) is a specification of common services for such interoperation, which include synchronization of simulation time and exchange of data between interoperated simulators. This paper introduces the DEVS framework and associated tools which support development of interoperable simulators under the HLA/RTI environment. The core of the tools is the DEVSimHLA environment for development of HLA-compliant simulators using the DEVS framework and the RTI interface. An architecture of interoperable war game simulators based on DEVSimHLA is presented;a list of DMSO certified federates developed using the DEVSimHLA environment is given.

The great success of machine learning in image processing and related fields also motivated its application to dynamical system identification. In particular, neural networks are trained to learn equations of motion and thus provide an alternative to first-principle modeling. While these black-box algorithms are quite flexible regarding the system structure, they often have difficulties in learning basic physics laws which are intrinsic system properties. Recently, Hamiltonian neural networks (HNN) were introduced to explicitly learn the total energy of a system in order to overcome the lack of physical rules. However, Hamiltonian systems often also contain other structures such as symmetries in terms of further invariances. In this contribution, we extend HNN such they respect system invariances in addition to the Hamiltonian. The proposed extension leads to a trade off between energy conservation and conservation of invariance properties, which we investigate exemplarily. © 2021 The Authors. With the increasing role of distributed message systems (DMS) represented by Kafka in handling large-scale data streams, it is critical to improve system performance by optimizing configuration parameters in different production environments. Due to the target system possessing numerous configuration parameters and the complex interactions between them, parameter optimization becomes a complex and time-consuming process that relies heavily on human effort and an iterative trial-and-error approach. At present, this type of configuration parameter problem has been classified as the Configuration of Distributed Message systems (CDMS) problem, for which the goal is to obtain the optimal set of parameters for achieving the best performance. In order to deal with this complex problem, an automatic optimization method is proposed in this paper, which combines an automatic script-based deployment and running framework with an improved Genetic Algorithm (GA) in cooperation with the Random Forest (RF) and statistical methods, named the Directional-Mutation Genetic Algorithm (DMGA). The framework and algorithm are designed to find the best configuration efficiently, obtaining optimal parameters accurately without human supervision. Actual results of comparison experiments based on the Kafka system show that the DMGA algorithm significantly improves the data throughput performance of Kafka, and its optimization speed is more efficient than the basic GA, highlighting its potential to quickly optimize Kafka's operational efficiency in different scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

We address the fine-grained image recognition problem using user click data, wherein each image is represented as a semantical query-click feature vector. Usually, the query set obtained from search engines is large-scale and redundant. We propose a novel query modeling approach to merge semantically similar queries and construct a compact click feature. We represent each query as a click feature, and design a graph based propagation approach to predict the zero-clicks, ensuring similar images have similar clicks. Afterwards, using this feature, we formulate the problem as a sparse coding based recognition task, wherein the dictionary is discriminatively trained. We evaluate our method for fine-grained image recognition on the public Clickture-Dog dataset. It is shown that, the propagated click feature performs much better than the original one. Also, sparse coding performs better than K-means in query merging. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

This paper discusses a cost-effective system for virtual collaborative simulation of prototypes, tests, and production for integrated product/process development. The virtual prototypes perform three-dimensional modeling of the physical operation of equipment and weapon systems. Realistic qualification tests are modeled to allow assessment via simulation without building hardware. The risk of transition to full production manufacturing is mitigated by virtual testing integrated with production simulation. A virtual collaborative interface is utilized to allow the simulations to be distributed and exchanged over a network (including the Internet). The feasibility of the collaborative virtual prototype and test environment has been shown with simulations hosted on a server and accessed by desktop computers over the Internet.

The presence of inverter based renewable resources has introducing new challenges on transmission systems due sudden loss of several MW after voltage and frequency excursions. These sudden disconnections have been related with a fault ride through control in voltage and frequency excursions following PRC-024 standard. The NERC Inverter-Based Resource Performance Task Force has expressed the necessity for a full ride-through standard with clear requirements as to how the resource can behave in terms on control and protection aspects. In consequence, this article addresses the problem to define the control and protection that can be taken under frequency and voltage excursions to avoid disconnections. For this purpose, this article proposes a new magnitude and frequency computation with computations delays under 16 ms and the use of new detection techniques to add new control and protection functions to the inverter based renewable resources.

Update summarization can be a daunting task in automatic text summarization. It aims to distill evolved messages from a collection of new articles, under the assumption that the reader has already browsed the previous articles. In this paper, a number of state-of-the-art approaches were reviewed for extracting update summarization and then a method called DPC-TS was proposed. This approach is derived from the DPC-based multi-documents summarization method, which was developed in 2015. In our study, a model was established by using the topic signature algorithm, to evaluate the novelty of sentences in update documents set. In addition, the scheme of calculating similarities between sentences and sentence selection approach was improved to ensure there are diversity topics in the summary. DPC-TS update documents summarization method is a simple and effective approach, which can be reproduced and deployed in real environment. © 2016 IEEE.

City traffic often exhibits regional characteristics, such as large trucks frequently appearing in the suburbs, and the paths to playgrounds on weekends generally being congested. Discovering and visualizing these hidden traffic regions inside which roads share similar characteristics of traffic conditions simplifies the modeling complexities of whole city traffic conditions and therefore contributes significantly toward city planning. Unfortunately, such traffic regions always have irregular shapes and are time varying, which makes their discovery extremely complicated. In addition, establishing a method to visualize and explore the traffic regions interactively still remains challenging. In this article, the authors propose a latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA)-based approach to the discovery of underlying traffic regions (or region topics) from vehicle trajectories captured by surveillance devices installed along roadsides. They treat vehicle trajectories as documents and the values of different traffic features, such as locations, directions, speeds and vehicle types, as the corresponding words. After applying the LDA model, they obtain a list of region topics with combined feature values, in which the different feature values are clustered with probabilistic assignments. Meanwhile, they build a prototype system to explore the surveillance-device-based vehicle trajectories according to the discovered region topics. The prototype system, which consists of map view, cloud view, treemap view and matrix-table view, visualizes the feature values of hidden traffic regions. The authors finally research a real case based on the traffic data in Wenzhou City, a large city in eastern China with a population of more than nine million. They investigate approximately 157 surveillance devices and 750,000 moving vehicles. The case demonstrates the effectiveness of both their proposed approach and the prototype system. © 2016 Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

Industrial mixers for powders and granular materials operate with no effective control of mixture quality and lack scientific design. The last twenty years have seen growth in understanding of mixing and mixers. However, research falls far short of what is needed for on-line characterisation of mixture quality. Secondly, although theoretical descriptions of a few mixer types have been reported, these fall far short of what is needed for equipment design. Two thrusts could revolutionise this situation. One is a scientific characterisation of mixer structure applicable to industrial scale as well as laboratory scale equipment; this is now within our grasp using digital imaging. The other is the development of ideas to overcome the restricted number of particles that can be used in the Distinct Element Method （DEM） for mixers. The goal should be to take the designer through a sequence of steps to the most appropriate mixer size, configuration and operating conditions for a given process duty.

Egocentric activity recognition using two-stage decision fusion

The widespread adoption of wearable devices equipped with advanced sensor technologies has fueled the rapid growth of egocentric video capture, known as First Person Vision (FPV). Unlike traditional third-person videos, FPV exhibits distinct characteristics such as significant ego-motions and frequent scene changes, rendering conventional vision-based methods ineffective. This paper introduces a novel audio-visual decision fusion framework for egocentric activity recognition (EAR) that addresses these challenges. The proposed framework employs a two-stage decision fusion pipeline with explicit weight learning, integrating both audio and visual cues to enhance overall recognition performance. Additionally, a new publicly available dataset, the Egocentric Outdoor Activity Dataset, comprising 1392 video clips featuring 30 diverse outdoor activities, is also introduced to facilitate comparative evaluations of EAR algorithms and spur further research in the field. Experimental results demonstrate that the integration of audio and visual information significantly improves activity recognition performance, outperforming single modality approaches and equally weighted decisions from multiple modalities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
