This paper illustrates specific challenges encountered in attempting to follow standardized principles and methods, established during the earlier eras of design of experiments (DOE), when the task is the design and analysis of simulation experiments (DASE). These problems are accentuated when DASE is used to develop and improve software-centric systems, such as guided missiles, which manifest a new level of dynamic complexity. An analysis of the current issues paves the way for successful DASE, and a companion paper (Part 2) describes how DOE is being modified and expanded to increase likelihood success in this emerging era. © 2011 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. This paper presents a numerical study of particle-fluid flow in complex three-dimensional (3D) systems by means of Combined Continuum and Discrete Method (CCDM). In the CCDM, the motion of discrete particles phase is obtained by Discrete Particle Method (DPM) which applies Newton's laws of motion to every particle and the flow of continuum fluid is described by the local averaged Navier-Stokes equations that can be solved by the traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This method has been increasingly used worldwide, but so far its application is limited to relatively simple flow systems. In this work, the simulation is achieved by incorporating a DPM code into the commercial CFD software package Fluent that can be readily used for complex CFD problems. The applicability of this development is demonstrated in the study of the particle-fluid flow in various 3D systems including pneumatic conveying bend, cyclone separator and circulating fluidized bed. It is shown that the numerical results are qualitatively in good agreement with those measured, and can generate information leading to better understanding of the internal flow structure of these systems.

Tightening budgets and greater competition for funding are increasing the need to more completely, persuasively, and transparently value and market complex, and often exotic, Space Programs. This is driving an expanding view of what's required in an engineering, economic, and political language of discourse. Words and phrases like holistic, future generations, new frontiers, vision, inspiring, and sustainable are increasingly important to encompass the full range of stakeholders, the full spectrum of societal needs and values, and the vastly differing awareness, sophistication, and priorities among stakeholders. There's a well-known saying in Sales, that "you sell the sizzle, not the steak". This is increasingly necessary to achieve widespread understanding, public buy-in, and sustainability. We consider how the components of a "value proposition" may be mapped to corresponding parts of the final report for a kind of "Meta - Trade Study" with respect to allocation of Society's resources among alternative objectives and programs. We investigate how that viewpoint helps us to understand, quantify and communicate a "Value Proposition for Space". We also point out limitations of this perspective, hence areas that must be extended, and suggest how this may be done. When engineers and scientists encounter the mixing of powders, they enter a subject where it is often difficult to find bearings. This perspective seeks to address this need by setting out the state of prac- tice. It then considers the growing momentum in the area following advances in computation and in measurement that became significant in the 1990s. The mixing of powders and granular materials is of central importance for the quality and performance of a wide range of products. However, process design and operation are very difficult, being largely based on judgement rather than science. There are not even tabulated data to tell how the quality of mixtures depends on mixer selection. Design depends on experience and insight, not science. There are no sound scale-up laws for a given equipment type, largely because particle size needs to be included in any dimensional analysis. Design is not possible by applying physical principles. There is no reliable equation to describe the flow of single component powders, let alone multi-component mixtures. In most cases, measurement has been difficult because the materials are optically opaque. Work in the research literature has been questionable because the results obtained for mixture sampling are affected by sample size. Recently, modern experimental techniques and modelling work have provided a good deal of infor- mation on the behaviour of many of the pieces of equipment, though these have been small in size and often confined to materials of a single size. However, the studies have enhanced knowledge of physical behaviour. For example, for a wide range of equipment when operating at lower velocities, mixing is determined by the number of revolutions of the mixer, not the time. Observations of flow structure have led to a few specific models that should scale with equipment size. Defense-related simulation efforts are increasingly focused on component-based simulation development. This focus is reflected in efforts to design new simulation software in terms of interacting components that can be understood and reused in isolation or collectively and to modify legacy simulators to incorporate new component-based simulation technology. A strong, new capability to modify simulation software is necessary to make component-based simulation development a reality. Such a capability can only be realized by incorporating sound modeling and simulation principles and a clear separation of concerns between models, simulators, and distributed computing. This paper presents a design pattern that supports the construction of adaptable simulation software via an extension of the Model/View/Control design pattern. The resulting Model/Simulator/View/Control pattern incorporates key concepts from the DEVS modeling and simulation methodology in order to promote a separation of modeling, simulation, and distributed computing issues. The advantage of this approach to simulation software design is considered in the context of other documented attempts to promote component based simulation development. The new design pattern is demonstrated through its application in a simulation based test signal generator used to support the Single Integrated Air Picture (SIAP) systems engineering effort. © 2004, The Society for modeling and simulation International. Evaluation and selection of green sustainable development (GSD) strategies is a critical but difficult process involving many uncertain factors and affected by dynamic conditions. The decision problem is essentially multi-objective. This research proposed a simulation based method that uses simulation to capture the complicated process flow and decision logic involved, and interface the simulation with a search procedure to improve solutions. The design of simulation model emphasized a robust structure that represents adequately the process flow and decision logic of typical applications of GSD improvement. A process/activity based cost structure was built into the simulation to capture essential trade-offs contributed by different cost drivers during the process of GSD implementation. Experiments were designed and implemented via simulation to verify and validate proposed concepts. An analysis of response surface method (RSM) was conducted to illustrate the search for optimal solutions under relaxed conditions, which showed the potential of developed research. © 2011 IEEE.

It is useful to model the interactions between the water and energy models separately. A coupled water and energy model using an interaction model lends itself to developing flexible, yet rigorous predictive simulation studies. A WEAP-LEAP interaction model is developed based on the Knowledge Interchange Broker modeling approach. A RESTful simulation framework is developed for coupling the Componentized-WEAP and Componentized-LEAP systems. Every interaction model is defined to have a set of modules where each module has its input and output ports with data transformation schemes. The input and output ports of the Componentized-WEAP and Componentized-LEAP models are coupled with those of the interaction model. A cyclic, synchronous execution protocol is defined for concurrent, bidirectional data transformations. The computational efficiency of this loosely coupled water-energy framework is acceptable compared with the tightly WEAP-LEAP system. This proposed framework shows understanding the water-energy system nexus is advantageous using interaction modeling. © 2020 SCS.

Cellular Automata (CA) models are represented as a collection of independent dynamical cells having some specific spatial relationship to each other. These tessellation automata can have simple to complex behaviors due to both individual cell behaviors as well as their interactions. Code debugging, supported by advanced software development tools, is needed for developing CAs owing their complex dynamics to cells that have non-trivial event handling and timing. As such, it is useful to debug models during simulation through step-by-step examination of any number of cells using rich control and visualization means. In this paper, we show the CA-DEVS framework where cell and Cellular Automata models are derived from atomic and coupled Parallel DEVS models. This framework uniquely supports visualizations using run-time generation of input, output, and state linear and superdense time trajectories as well as run-time spatial animation with playback. Multi-modal visualization capabilities allow examining behavior of any number of cells independent of any other cell. We describe some key parts of the architectural design of the CA-DEVS and highlight some ongoing and future research. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In recent years, researches on vocational skills are very extensive, most of them concentrated on vocational skills training, effect of vocational skill competition, vocational education and vocational skill identification and so on. But, there is very little research on the inner relationship among vocational skill based on big data. To address the issue, from LinkedIn we first collect tens of thousands of member profiles with vocational skills as empirical data. And then, we dig out high-frequency vocational skills and apply correlation analysis method to explore correlation characteristics of vocational skills. According to our studying, we figure out that there exist a large number of association rules, some of which have very high degrees of confidence, lift, and support. This research reveals the intrinsic association among different vocational skills. These relationships can reflect the general behavior and cognitive rules of human beings. We hope that our research results can provide a theoretical base for other research areas of vocational skills, such as vocational skill training, vocational skill mining, and identification of vocational skills. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

Many scientific and engineering applications generate data that are well-suited to be studied using time series charts. Two types of time series that define input, output, and state dynamics of DEVS models are piecewise constant and event charts. In this paper, time series capable of displaying both linear and superdense time segments and trajectories are conceptualized and formulated. These lend themselves for visualizing behavior of parallel atomic and coupled DEVS models. The concept of superdense time segments is realized as plug-ins as part of the Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tool) framework. They can receive timebased alphanumerical data sets from external static and dynamic sources, including the DEVS-Suite simulator. As standalone plug-ins, time series can be used to create static plots and used in BIRT reports. These plug-ins are also integrated into the DEVS-Suite simulator where each model component's behavior can be customized and dynamically plotted. Time series charts simplify and complement tabular logging of data sets for developing simulation models that exhibit zero-time transitory state transitions. © 2015 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).
