The n-player prisoner's dilemma (Pd) is a useful model of multilevel selection for altruistic traits. It highlights the non zero-sum interactions necessary for the evolution of altruism as well as the tension between individual and group-level selection. The parameters of the n-player Pd can be directly related to the Price equation as well as to a useful alternative selection decomposition. Finally, the n-player Pd emphasizes the expected equilibrium condition of mutual defection in the absence of higher levels of organization and selection.

The concept of value templates and perceptual learning are introduced as refinements to the reinforcement learning (RL) paradigm. We demonstrate a method for accelerating dual Heuristic programming (dHP) critic training using value templates and perceptual learning. Both faster and more stable learning are achieved by using the value template and utilizing its inherent constraints to regularize the perceptual learning task. The method is demonstrated by tuning a neurofuzzy control system for a highly nonlinear 2nd order plant proposed by Sanner and Slotine. We take advantage of the TSK model framework throughout to keep the controller, critic, and model components used in dHP highly interpretable.

I report on numerical experiments in which a detector reliably found chaotic signals at signal to noise ratios as low as - 15 dB. The detector was based on a variant of the hidden Markov models used in speech research. The task was particularly difficult because the Fourier power spectrum of the noise was constructed to match the spectrum of the signal. I review likelihood ratio detectors, limitations on the performance of linear models implied by the broad Fourier power spectra of chaotic signals, and the upper limit that the Kolmogorov-Sinai (KS) entropy of a chaotic system places on the expected log likelihood attainable by any model. I find that KS entropy estimates indicate that even better detection performance is possible.

dynamic programming (dP) is a principled way to design optimal controllers for certain classes of nonlinear systems;unfortunately, dP is computationally very expensive. The Reinforcement Learning methods known as Adaptive Critics (AC) provide computationally feasible means for performing approximate dynamic programming (AdP). The term 'adaptive ' in A C refers to the critic 's improved estimations of the Value Function used by dP. To apply dP, the user must craft a Utility function that embodies all the problem-specific design specifications/criteria. Model Reference Adaptive Control methods have been successfully used in the control community to effect on-line redesign of a controller in response to variations in plant parameters, with the idea that the resulting closed loop system dynamics will mimic those of a Reference Model. The work reported here 1) uses a reference model in AdP as the key information input to the Utility function, and 2) uses AdP off-line to design the desired controller. Future work will extend this to on-line application. This method is demonstrated for a hypersonic shaped airplane called LoFL YTE®;its handling characteristics are natively a little "hotter" than a pilot woulddesire. A control augmentation subsystem is designed using AdP to make the plane "feel like " a better behaved one, as specified by a Reference Model. The number of inputs to the successfully designed controller are among the largest seen in the literature to date.
