Hidden Markov models of chaotic signals have been used in numerical detection experiments. For broadband deterministic chaotic signals masked with noise having identical spectra at an SNR of -15 db, the experiments found flawless receiver operating characteristics. In noisy environments the performance of models trained on noise-free signals can be improved by training on signals contaminated by noise typical of the test environment. Continuous valued scalar outputs at each discrete hidden state are modeled as Gaussians with means that depend autoregressively on previous outputs.< >

He also serves as Coordinator of the University's Master's program in Instructional Technology. His educational background includes a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University an M Ed. in Mathematics Education from the same institution and a BS in Mathematics from Albright College. He is the author of several books on microcomputer applications and has received the Distinguished Teaching Award at the university. During the past seven years Dr. Bailey has been actively involved with the design development production and evaluation of interactive videodisc projects. He has managed many interactive video projects and conducts interactive video workshops for interested professionals. As a frequent speaker at national and international conferences Dr. Bailey possesses broad practical experience in the teaching and development of interactive video instructional systems. Dr. Nancy E. Thornton:is Assistant Director for Research and Development of the Institute for Interactive Technologies at Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg Pennsylvania. Her educational background includes a PhD in Educational Psychology from Arizona State University an MS in Speech and Hearing from Washington University and a BA in Psychology and Speech from the College of St. Catherine. She teaches introductory and advanced instructional design and authoring systems in the Master of Science program in Instructional Technology. Her specialty areas include instructional design learning theory and classroom applications of interactive technologies.

This article provides information about the actual and potential uses of interactive video in instruction in an effort to motivate educators to consider using this technology to improve teaching. The authors (1) describe the continuing evolution of computer-based educational tools; (2) examine instances when an interactive videodisc provides viable instructional solutions to otherwise very difficult or impossible tasks; (3) discuss several models for delivering instruction to accommodate different learning styles and teaching methods; and (4) provide a framework for designing lessons systematically based on proven methods.

Multiple perspectives: Concept, applications, and user guidelines

The evolution of the multiple perspective approach and its range of applications over the past decade are reviewed. The traditional technical perspective of systems analysis is augmented with organizational and personal perspectives. The three types of perspectives have inherently different characteristics and properties. The applications show that each perspective yields insights on a system that are not attainable with the others. The organizational and personal perspectives also focus more attention on problems of implementation. The concept is serving as an effective and practical vehicle to overcome the limitations of systems analysis in dealing with complex real-world situations. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Exact isomorphisms with formal systems which employ the standard linguistic notations are established for Spencer-Brown's primary algebra and F. J. Varela's calculus for self-reference. The primary algebra is “essentially isomorphic” with classical propositional calculus, and the calculus for self-reference translates isomorphically into an axiomal-ization of S. C. Kleene's three-valued logic of partial recursion. This correlates Varela's “autonomy” with “total recursive undecidability”, and it suggests the use of Kleene-Varela type systems for discussing “mechanically unknowable” or empirically untestable system properties. © 1981, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Certain general principles of regulation and control are developed and substantiated by means of evidence from a variety of fields. First, success in regulation is a function of several variables including adaptability, use of heuristic devices, system structure and characteristics of its constituent parts. Second, both internal specialization of a system and the variety of its dependencies on the environment are important. However, while the variety is important only in the short‐run, system structure is important both in the short‐run and the long‐run. Third, according to the contemporary cybernetic paradigm, a self‐regulatory system must be an open system. This is concluded to be a myth. The theory is developed and illustrated.

The relevance of the logic theory machine to modelling of evolutionary systems

Based on the postulates underlying the Logic Theory Machine, an attempt is made to develop a stochastic model of the process of problem solving in non-laboratory situations. To determine the adequacy of the proposed model it is applied to the illustrative case of improvement in the design of digital computers over the course of time. The results of this study do not refute the claim that the scope of the information theory of problem solving may be broader than the tasks it has been applied hitherto. In particular, the relevance of the postulates underlying the Logic Theory Machine to modelling of evolutionary systems is pointed out. © 1977, MCB UP Limited
