Mathematical models are often used in system identification applications. The dynamics of most systems, however, change over time and the sources of these changes cannot always be directly determined or measured. To m...

The Plasma Arc Waste Destruction System (PAWDS) uses plasma energy, with temperatures over 5,000 degrees C, to rapidly and efficiently destroy combustible waste aboard ships. PAWDS has proven itself to be a viable alternative to traditional incinerators. >> In September 2003, Carnival Cruise Lines were the first to install a PAWDS aboard their 2,056 passenger (plus 1,000 crew members) capacity, M/S Fantasy cruise ship, to treat ship waste including paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles, wood, and food. As of June 2004, it is being operated and maintained solely by Carnival Cruise Lines personnel and has been permitted to operate in port by the Bahamian port authorities. >> The Navy's next generation aircraft carrier, CVN 21, will be equipped with two FAWDS to process all of the non-food combustible solid waste generated with sufficient system redundancy. The US Navy has been jointly developing the PAWDS with PyroGenesis Inc. over the last 6 years. The development efforts in 2004 and 2005 coupled with lessons learned from operation aboard Carnival's cruise ship have resulted in the identification of additional process and design improvements. Source emission testing by an independent laboratory has also demonstrated that the PAWDS easily meets IMO MARPOL requirements for the destruction of solid waste.

Reciprocal altruism and inclusive fitness are generally considered alternative mechanisms by which cooperative, altruistic traits may evolve. Here we demonstrate that very general versions of Hamilton's inclusive fitness rule (developed by Queller) can be applied to traditional reciprocal altruism models such as the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma. In this way we show that both mechanisms rely fundamentally on the same principle - the positive assortment of helping behaviors. We discuss barriers to this unified view, including phenotype/genotype differences and non-additive fitness (or utility) functions that are typical of reciprocal altruism models. We then demonstrate how Queller's versions of Hamilton's rule remove these obstacles.

In this paper we demonstrate the use of Linguistic Adaptive Critics (LACs) for the design of fuzzy control systems. This technique is related to Adaptive Critic based Approximate Dynamic programming as developed and applied in the neurocontrol context. We have previously shown how such techniques can be convieniently generalized to fuzzy controllers or neuro-fuzzy hybrids. We demonstrate LACs by designing a temperature controller for a simple water bath system.

We propose a method for process monitoring of a semiconductor manufacturing process. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is applied to characterize E-test parameter data. We calculate angular confidence intervals for the model, eliminate marginally significant components, and implement control charts for significant components of interest. Alarms are generated off of deviations in the charted components. Alarms are easily used in process diagnosis based on the interpretation of the independent components.

Adaptive Critic methods for reinforcement learning are known to provide consistent solutions to optimal control problems, and are also considered plausible models for cognitive learning processes. This paper discusses binary reinforcement in the context of three Adaptive Critic methods: Heuristic Dynamic programming (HDP), Dual Heuristic programming (DHP), and Globalized Dual Heuristic programming (GDHP). Binary reinforcement arises when the qualitative measure of success is simply "pass" or "fail". We implement binary reinforcement with Adaptive Critic methods for the pole-cart benchmark problem. Results demonstrate two qualitatively dissimilar classes of controllers: those that replicate the system stabilization achieved with quadratic utility, and those that merely succeed at not dropping the pole. It is found that the GDHP method is effective for learning an approximately optimal solution, with results comparable to those obtained via DHP that uses a more informative, quadratic utility function.
