The widespread adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has introduced an era of unparalleled connectivity and data-driven innovation. Nevertheless, this rapid proliferation introduced significant security challenges. The limited computational capabilities of IoT devices impose constraints on the implementation of robust security mechanisms, rendering them susceptible to malicious attacks. Additionally, the dynamic nature of IoT systems which allows multiple administrators to add or remove IoT devices, necessitates the establishment of an identity management system. This system is crucial for managing both devices and system users, ensuring the traceability of device registration activities, and maintaining accountability of system users. Furthermore, traditional centralized authentication systems encounter scalability issues and high costs associated with centralized servers. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a Dual Identity Management and Authentication (DIMA) framework, leveraging blockchain technology. The proposed framework addresses two primary issues. Firstly, it assigns dual identities to each IoT node, facilitating a secure authentication process and regulating network access. Secondly, it supports the traceability of system device registration activities, enabling accountability for system users and ensuring a secure administrator-in-the-loop device identification process. Moreover, experimental testing and security analysis are undertaken to validate the usability and ascertain the critical security strengths of the DIMA framework. © 2024 IEEE.

In the rapidly advancing field of autonomous technologies, particularly in transportation and surveillance, there is a critical need for accurate and reliable pedestrian detection systems. While deep learning models have achieved remarkable success in this area, their 'black box' nature often concerns their trustworthiness and practical applicability. Our study introduces a modified YOLOv5s model, augmented with a Global Attention Mechanism and enhanced with Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) for improved explainability. This approach maintains the high accuracy typical of deep learning models while significantly increasing their transparency. Our modified YOLOv5s architecture is tailored for real-time applications, achieving an inference speed of 9.4 milliseconds on a single NVIDIA A100 GPU. Incorporating Grad-CAM provides a more intuitive interpretation of the model's decisions, potentially increasing user confidence in its predictions. We evaluate our enhanced framework on the CityPersons dataset, demonstrating improvements in precision, recall, and mAP@0.5 compared to the baseline YOLOv5s model. Our results indicate a promising advancement in pedestrian detection, balancing high performance with improved explainability. © 2024 IEEE.

High-resolution images offer more information about scenes that can improve model accuracy. However, the dominant model architecture in computer vision, the vision transformer (ViT), cannot effectively leverage larger images without finetuning - ViTs poorly extrapolate to more patches at test time, although transformers offer sequence length flexibility. We attribute this shortcoming to the current patch position encoding methods, which create a distribution shift when extrapolating. We propose a drop-in replacement for the position encoding of plain ViTs that restricts attention heads to fixed fields of view, pointed in different directions, using 2D attention masks. Our novel method, called LookHere, provides translation-equivariance, ensures attention head diversity, and limits the distribution shift that attention heads face when extrapolating. We demonstrate that LookHere improves performance on classification (avg.↑ 1.6%), against adversarial attack (avg.↑ 5.4%), and decreases calibration error (avg.↓ 1.5%) - on ImageNet without extrapolation. With extrapolation, LookHere outperforms the current SoTA position encoding method, 2D-RoPE, by 21.7% on ImageNet when trained at 2242 px and tested at 10242 px. Additionally, we release a high-resolution test set to improve the evaluation of high-resolution image classifiers, called ImageNet-HR. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Time-frequency representations such as short-time Fourier transform and wavelet transform of the radar returns capture macro and micro motions of the individuals that facilitate human activity recognition using radars. However, the choice of windows in these transforms constrains the time-frequency resolution and may negatively impact the recognition of human activities. Synchro-squeezed Fourier and synchrosqueezed wavelet transforms are known to provide improved time-frequency resolution and therefore may provide better human activity recognition. This work uses the histogram of gradients (HOG) of the synchro-squeezed transforms as hand-crafted features for radar-based human activity recognition. Two types of synchro-squeezed time-frequency representations, namely, synchro-squeezed Fourier transform (SSFT) and synchro-squeezed wavelet transform (SSWT) are considered in this work. HOG features obtained from the synchrosqueezed transforms, the traditional short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and continuous time wavelet transform (CWT) are used with four well-known machine-learning classifiers, namely stochastic gradient descent (SGD), random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and support vector machine (SVM). A publicly available dataset consisting of radar signatures of human activities recorded at three different locations is used in this study and a location-wise training/testing strategy is utilized. The performance of radar-based activity recognition is significantly improved with the use of synchro-squeezed time-frequency representations as compared to time-frequency representations without synchro-squeezing. © 2024 IEEE.

Energy Sustainability in Dense Radio Access Networks via High Altitude Platform Stations

The growing demand for radio access networks (RANs) driven by advanced wireless technology and the ever-increasing mobile traffic, faces significant energy consumption challenges that threaten sustainability. To address this, an architecture referring to the vertical heterogeneous network (vHetNet) has recently been proposed. Our study seeks to enhance network operations in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability by examining a vHetNet configuration, comprising a high altitude platform station (HAPS) acting as a super macro base station (SMBS), along with a macro base station (MBS) and a set of small base stations (SBSs) in a densely populated area. By intelligently managing SBSs' sleep mode and employing HAPS's potentials and additional capacity, our approach aims to minimize vHetNet energy consumption. The proposed method dynamically determines which SBSs to switch off based on the traffic load of SBSs, MBS, and HAPS. This innovative approach offers a flexible and promising solution to enhance network sustainability, energy efficiency, and capacity utilization without compromising the user quality-of-service (QoS). We show that our proposed method offers a scalable solution with comparable performance to exhaustive search (ES) as the optimal solution in terms of energy efficiency. Furthermore, incorporating HAPS, significantly improves grid power consumption, compared to having no offloading, reducing it by 30% for a large number of SBSs. © 2019 IEEE.

In recent years, increasing concerns about the security of critical infrastructure have led to the development of various security standards, policies, and regulations. Consequently, it has become essential for any organization responsible for such infrastructure to ensure that their system software architecture complies with these security guidelines. As a result, in this paper we propose a methodology to enhance the security of software systems by incorporating compliance verification from the early stages of design, thereby proactively addressing potential flaws. Furthermore, we present a novel method for modeling a security compliance baseline based on the specification and reuse of analysis models targeting standards, policies, and regulations. This approach streamlines the compliance process, facilitating adherence to multiple security standards while promoting the reuse of security compliance analysis models. To demonstrate the practicality of the suggested framework and technique, we illustrate representative architecture compliance checks on a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. © 2023 IEEE.

The IEEE 802.1Qbv (80.21Qbv) standard is designed for traffic requiring deterministic and bounded latencies through strict periodic time synchronization, as specified by IEEE 802.1AS standard. However, internal clock drift in devices causes timing misalignment, introducing further challenges to 802.1Qbv scheduling. Existing solutions, using either complex optimization approaches or non-trivial scheduling heuristics, address this by scheduling frame transmissions only once they are guaranteed to have been fully received, even in the presence of clock drifts. However, this approach introduces additional delays that can impact deadline requirements. This letter analytically derives tight end-to-end latency bounds, allowing us to determine if stream deadlines for a given network will be violated without the need to solve for any scheduling algorithms. It also proposes an approach that results in tighter bounds based on information collected from the synchronization process. The analytical results are compared with simulation results, confirming their validity. © 2019 IEEE.

Ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous nephrolithotomy is a surgical procedure for large kidney stone removal through an incision in the patient's back. To gain kidney access, the surgeon steers a needle towards the kidney while simultaneously controlling the position and orientation of a US probe to keep the needle in the image plane. To successfully reach the kidney while avoiding delicate structures, a significant level of skill and precision is required. To alleviate the surgeon's cognitive workload, robot-assisted needle tracking can be implemented to autonomously track the needle in the US images and adjust the US probe's position and orientation such that the same portion of the needle is visible in the images. This paper presents a US-guided visual servoing (VS) algorithm to track the translation and rotation of a needle in a plane. Image features representing the desired pose of the needle in the image are defined, through which an interaction matrix is devised to relate the rate of the change of the image features in US images to the required position and orientation of the US probe connected to a robotic manipulator. Experimental results in 4 experimental scenarios in a water tank demonstrate the capability of the proposed method in tracking the needle in real-time with an accuracy of 2.6 mm with a control rate of 20 Hz. Although VS has been used to track surgical targets in the past, this paper proposes the first implementation of VS for needle tracking in longitudinal US images subjected to 3-DOF motion in a plane without any prior knowledge of needle trajectory or additional position sensors. © 2023 IEEE.

Industrial wastewater systems represent critical infrastructure involved in a non-profit societal objective. In such systems, the negative consequences (i.e., impact) resulting from cyberattacks often differ from for-profit systems and remain unseen unless investigated in detail. In this work, we use a four-stage impact analysis approach to explore the potential impact of attacks on a wastewater dechlorination system. More specifically, we use system and attacker models built and executed in UPPAAL-SMC to visualize the causes and propagation of impact. Furthermore, we use classical and statistical model checking to assess the existence and degree of potential impact. Our results reveal that combined data tampering and message spoofing attacks can often lead to different and more pronounced impacts than the attacks performed in isolation. Additionally, we highlight the physical, economic, and environmental aspects of impact on industrial wastewater systems and how to characterize them. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a high speed implementation of a recently developed quantum-safe multivariate polynomial digital signature algorithm on the ARM Cortex-M4 processor. The structure of the algorithm and its different security levels are demonstrated, with a focus on its layered implementation architecture and optimization techniques. The results demonstrate the superior performance of the new algorithm on resources-constrained devices compared to the three standardized NIST PQC digital signature algorithms in terms of processing speed, key and signature size, flash and RAM memory usage. Overall, the performance metrics presented in this study demonstrate the promising potential of that algorithm for securing digital communications in a post-quantum era. © 2023 IEEE.
