This study introduces three novel dynamic interval-valued principal component analysis (DIPCA) methods: dynamic centers PCA (D-CPCA), dynamic vertices PCA (D-VPCA), and dynamic complete information PCA (D-CIPCA). These methods advance traditional interval-valued PCA (IPCA) by integrating dynamic aspects of industrial processes, thus addressing both data uncertainties and temporal correlations. The DIPCA methods were validated using real-world data from the Ain El Kebira cement plant. Results indicate significant improvements in fault detection accuracy, achieving lower false alarm rates and higher reliability compared to classical IPCA methods. Furthermore, an enhanced combined index for interval-valued data was developed, providing a single, comprehensive statistical measure for streamlined process monitoring.

The interval-valued kernel PCA (UQ-KPCA) is a variation of the kernel PCA (KPCA) designed for interval-valued data, designed to handle data uncertainty by defining specific similarity measures and kernel functions for interval data. This paper introduces Uncertainty Quantification KPCA (UQ-KPCA) as a novel method to address uncertainties in data. UQ-KPCA converts the traditional KPCA model from single-valued to interval-valued representations, allowing for accurate error and uncertainty quantification. The process modeling using KPCA is then performed on data based on the interval model, followed by the computation of fault detection statistics such as T

, Q, and Φ. The method’s effectiveness is evaluated in the context of the cement rotary kiln process, and compared with the KPCA demonstrating superior performance in accurately identifying faults within a stochastic setting with unknown uncertainties.

Cortical visual prostheses are designed to treat blindness by restoring visual perceptions through artificial electrical stimulation of the primary visual cortex (V1). Intracortical microelectrodes produce the smallest visual percepts and thus higher resolution vision - like a higher density of pixels on a monitor. However, intracortical microelectrodes must maintain a minimum spacing to preserve tissue integrity. One solution to increase the density of percepts is to implant and stimulate multiple visual areas, such as V1 and V2, although the properties of microstimulation in V2 remain largely unexplored. We provide a direct comparison of V1 and V2 microstimulation in two common marmoset monkeys. We find similarities in response trends between V1 and V2 but differences in threshold, neural activity duration, and spread of activity at the threshold current. This has implications for using multi-area stimulation to increase the resolution of cortical visual prostheses.

Cobalt titanate, CoTiO3, is a honeycomb antiferromagnet recently confirmed experimentally to host Dirac magnons, topological spin-orbit excitons, and chiral phonons. Here, we investigate a magnon gap at the zone center which calls for a refined spin Hamiltonian. We propose a microscopic model for the magnon gap and attribute it to a lattice-distortion (phonon)-induced higher-order spin interaction. Strong magnetoelastic coupling in CoTiO3 is also evident in Raman spectra, in which the magnetic order exerts a stronger influence on phonons corresponding to in-plane ionic motions than those with out-of-plane motions. We further examine the evolution of the zone-center magnons in a high magnetic field up to 18.5 T via THz absorption spectroscopy measurements. Based on this field dependence, we propose a spin Hamiltonian that not only agrees with magnon dispersion measured by inelastic neutron scattering but also includes fewer exchange constants and a realistic anisotropy term. Our work highlights the broad implications of magnetoelastic coupling in the study of topologically protected bosonic excitations.
