A collaborative course called Global Awareness for Technology Implementation was conducted by the Faculty of engineering, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. The objective of this course was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, perspectives, and experiences between Thai and Japanese students through project work, using an engineering design approach and the design thinking process to create innovation relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the class, experts shared their knowledge and experiences with the students. The students then worked on their respective projects to develop solution concepts using the design thinking process. The proposed ideas include the application for English class, smart water quality checker, hydrogen-based energy system for rural area, reduced wasted fashion solution, and auto waste sorting machine. Finally, this study concluded with a summary of the results and findings on the empathy process in the chosen SDGs, and of the commonalities and differences between Thailand and Japan in terms of ideation. © 2023 IEEE.

Beyond Distribution Shift: Spurious Features Through the Lens of Training Dynamics

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are prone to learning spurious features that correlate with the label during training but are irrelevant to the learning problem. This hurts model generalization and poses problems when deploying them in safety-critical applications. This paper aims to better understand the effects of spurious features through the lens of the learning dynamics of the internal neurons during the training process. We make the following observations: (1) While previous works highlight the harmful effects of spurious features on the generalization ability of DNNs, we emphasize that not all spurious features are harmful. Spurious features can be "benign" or "harmful" depending on whether they are "harder" or "easier" to learn than the core features for a given model. This definition is model and dataset dependent. (2) We build upon this premise and use instance difficulty methods (like Prediction Depth (Baldock et al., 2021)) to quantify "easiness" for a given model and to identify this behavior during the training phase. (3) We empirically show that the harmful spurious features can be detected by observing the learning dynamics of the DNN’s early layers. In other words, easy features learned by the initial layers of a DNN early during the training can (potentially) hurt model generalization. We verify our claims on medical and vision datasets, both simulated and real, and justify the empirical success of our hypothesis by showing the theoretical connections between Prediction Depth and information-theoretic concepts like V-usable information (Ethayarajh et al., 2021). Lastly, our experiments show that monitoring only accuracy during training (as is common in machine learning pipelines) is insufficient to detect spurious features. Multi-robot belief space planning (MR-BSP) is essential for reliable and safe autonomy. While planning, each robot maintains a belief over the state of the environment and reasons how the belief would evolve in the future for different candidate actions. Yet, existing MR-BSP works have a common assumption that the beliefs of different robots are consistent at planning time. Such an assumption is often highly unrealistic, as it requires prohibitively extensive and frequent communication capabilities. In practice, each robot may have a different belief about the state of the environment. Crucially, when the beliefs of different robots are inconsistent, state-of-the-art MR-BSP approaches could result in a lack of coordination between the robots, and in general, could yield dangerous, unsafe and suboptimal decisions. In this paper, we tackle this crucial gap. We develop a novel decentralized algorithm that is guaranteed to find a consistent joint action. For a given robot, our algorithm reasons for action preferences about 1) its local information, 2) what it perceives about the reasoning of the other robot, and 3) what it perceives about the reasoning of itself perceived by the other robot. This algorithm finds a consistent joint action whenever these steps yield the same best joint action obtained by reasoning about action preferences; otherwise, it self-triggers communication between the robots. Experimental results show efficacy of our algorithm in comparison with two baseline algorithms.

The aquaculture industry faces significant challenges related to sustainability, productivity, and fish welfare. Key issues include managing environmental conditions, disease, pests, and data integration from various sensors and monitoring systems. The BigFish project aims to address these challenges through advanced analytics and machine learning, focusing on three case studies in Atlantic salmon farms: predicting oxygen levels, reducing sea lice infestations, and improving data interaction and visualization. Predictive models for oxygen levels and sea lice infestation, as well as natural language interfaces for data visualization, demonstrate the potential for improved decision-making and management practices in aquaculture. Early results indicate the effectiveness of these approaches, highlighting the importance of data-driven solutions in enhancing industry sustainability and productivity. © 2024 IEEE.

Skin cancer's increasing incidence rates necessitate advanced diagnostic tools. This research uses MobileNet architecture to develop an enhanced system for skin cancer detection. MobileNet's efficient CNN architecture, combined with Keras for model lifecycle management and TensorFlow for real-time inference, forms the foundation of this study. Using 10,015 dermatoscopic pictures from seven different classifications of skin cancer in the HAM10000 dataset, the methodology includes several key stages: image preprocessing to correct illumination and adjust resolution, data augmentation to balance the dataset, and model training using Transfer Learning. The MobileNet model was trained over 50 epochs with a comprehensive architecture incorporating multiple specialized layers. By combining large-scale data analysis and adaptive learning, this methodology demonstrates The revolutionary possibilities of AI and ML in improving skin cancer diagnostics and public health outcomes. The uniform capacitated vertex k-center problem is an -hard combinatorial optimization problem that models real situations where k centers can only attend a maximum number of customers, and the travel time or distance from the customers to their assigned center has to be minimized. This article introduces a polynomial-time constructive heuristic algorithm that exploits the relationship between this problem and the minimum capacitated dominating set problem. The proposed heuristic is based on the one-hop farthest-first heuristic that has proven effective for the uncapacitated version of the problem. We carried out different empirical evaluations of the proposed heuristic, including an analysis of the effect of a parallel implementation of the algorithm, which significantly improved the running time for relatively large instances. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Distilling BlackBox to Interpretable models for Efficient Transfer Learning

Building generalizable AI models is one of the primary challenges in the healthcare domain. While radiologists rely on generalizable descriptive rules of abnormality, Neural Network (NN) models suffer even with a slight shift in input distribution (e.g., scanner type). Fine-tuning a model to transfer knowledge from one domain to another requires a significant amount of labeled data in the target domain. In this paper, we develop an interpretable model that can be efficiently fine-tuned to an unseen target domain with minimal computational cost. We assume the interpretable component of NN to be approximately domain-invariant. However, interpretable models typically underperform compared to their Blackbox (BB) variants. We start with a BB in the source domain and distill it into a mixture of shallow interpretable models using human-understandable concepts. As each interpretable model covers a subset of data, a mixture of interpretable models achieves comparable performance as BB. Further, we use the pseudo-labeling technique from semi-supervised learning (SSL) to learn the concept classifier in the target domain, followed by fine-tuning the interpretable models in the target domain. We evaluate our model using a real-life large-scale chest-X-ray (CXR) classification dataset. This study introduces three novel dynamic interval-valued principal component analysis (DIPCA) methods: dynamic centers PCA (D-CPCA), dynamic vertices PCA (D-VPCA), and dynamic complete information PCA (D-CIPCA). These methods advance traditional interval-valued PCA (IPCA) by integrating dynamic aspects of industrial processes, thus addressing both data uncertainties and temporal correlations. The DIPCA methods were validated using real-world data from the Ain El Kebira cement plant. Results indicate significant improvements in fault detection accuracy, achieving lower false alarm rates and higher reliability compared to classical IPCA methods. Furthermore, an enhanced combined index for interval-valued data was developed, providing a single, comprehensive statistical measure for streamlined process monitoring.

computer simulations are an important tool for studying the mechanics of biological evolution. In particular, agent-based approaches provide an opportunity to collect high-quality records of ancestry relationships. Such phylogenies can provide insight into evolutionary dynamics within these simulations. Previous work generally tracks lineages directly, yielding an exact phylogenetic record of evolutionary history. However, challenges exist in scaling direct ancestrytracking approaches to highly-distributed, many-processor evolution in silico. An alternative approach is to estimate phylogenetic history via noncoding annotations on digital genomes, akin to how bioinformaticians build phylogenies by assessing genetic similarities between organisms. Recent work has extended this 'hereditary stratigraphy' approach to support powerful hardware accelerator platforms, such as the Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine. Although these second-generation 'surface'-based hereditary stratigraphy algorithms have demonstrated order-ofmagnitude speedups over first-generation 'column'-based algorithms, it remains unknown how they impact the accuracy of reconstructed phylogenies. To address this question, we assessed reconstruction accuracy under alternative configurations across a matrix of evolutionary conditions varying in selection pressure, spatial structure, and ecological dynamics. Encouragingly, we find that the second-generation approaches provide higher reconstruction quality across most surveyed conditions. © 2025 IEEE.
