The University of Oklahoma has developed a Telecommunications Interoperability Laboratory to enhance the educational and research experience of students in the Telecommunications systemsprogram. The Interoperability Lab is a collection of five interconnected technology islands: the Internet Protocol (IP), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Optical, Wireless, and Legacy. Each island is designed as an entity in its own right, but also provides the interconnection capability with any combination of other islands to create a fully functional end-to-end networking environment. This paper describes the architecture of the Interoperability Lab, as well as how it will impact the education of our students.
The development of a CIM (computer Integrated Manufacturing) environment requires that inspection processes be linked to databases containing the design data. Increased emphasis on flexibility must not be bought at th...

In this paper we present the architecture for the Personal Autonomic Desktop Manager, a self managing application designed to act on behalf of the user in several aspects: protection, healing, optimization and configuration. The overall goal of this research is to improve the correlation of the autonomic self* properties and doing so also enhance the overall self-management capacity of the desktop (autonomicity). We introduce the Circulatory Computing (CC) model, a self-managing system initiative based on the biological metaphor of the cardiovascular system, and use its concepts in the design and implementation of the architecture.

This paper presents a hybrid integration approach for heterogeneous heavy tailed traffic from multiple classes over a channel of known capacity, where the service times follow lognormal distribution. Using our hybrid integration approach, we formulate a procedure that can minimize delay while improving the channel utilization. We show that this approach yields lower delays than either the integrated or segregated approach described in published literature.
In modern software engineering the task of migration from one system environment to another may arise very often (e.g. software migrating from Windows to Linux or from desktop PC to some mobile platform). This task ma...

A revision of Union College's Introduction to engineering and computer Science course is presented. The change include the introduction of a design project and competition, the presentation of engineering and computer science concepts under a unifying theme, and the introduction of weekly talks from outside speakers. The course instruction also changed from a series of modules taught by different faculty to a structure in which all the faculty taught all the topics in the course. If this approach is used with a group of cooperative faculty, the benefits of the exposure to different teaching styles and understanding of other disciplines can be positive.
