The operation of a radar system requires a trade-off between detection capabilities, power efficiency, and adjacent channel power minimization. Specifically, wide signal bandwidth is important for range detection. This paper presents how load-pull data taken for multiple linear frequency-modulated chirp waveforms with different bandwidths can be used to select the chirp waveform with the largest bandwidth possible, while meeting adjacent-channel power ratio and power-added efficiency requirements. This approach utilizes plots of adjacent-channel power ratio and power-added efficiency surfaces within a Smith tube, a three-dimensional, cylindrical extrapolation of the traditional Smith chart. A measurement example is given to illustrate the design approach. This approach will be useful in the design of range radars, and also is likely to find use in enabling real-time reconfiguration of future radars for varying spectral environments and efficiency requirements. © 2014 IEEE.

Future Internet of Things (IoT) devices will need to maintain high power efficiency while being able to reconfigure for changing performance requirements and operating frequencies. The design of quickly reconfigurable power amplifiers able to maintain high efficiency and meet spectral requirements will be critical to success. This paper discusses fast optimization techniques that will be useful in real-time optimization of transmitter power amplifiers: (1) a vector-based algorithm to find the load impedance giving the highest power-added efficiency (PAE) while keeping the adjacent-channel power ratio (ACPR) below a prespecified minimum, (2) the use of a spectral mask directly in the load-pull optimization in place of the ACPR, and (3) the extension of the Smith Chart to a three-dimensional, cylindrical "Smith Tube" for optimization involving an additional parameter: the waveform bandwidth. This paper builds a framework for design and the real-time optimization of reconfigurable, efficient, and spectrally compliant IoT power amplifiers. © 2014 IEEE.

Transcriptomic imputation approaches combine eQTL reference panels with large-scale genotype data in order to test associations between disease and gene expression. These genic associations could elucidate signals in complex genome-wide association study (GWAS) loci and may disentangle the role of different tissues in disease development. We used the largest eQTL reference panel for the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to create a set of gene expression predictors and demonstrate their utility. We applied DLPFC and 12 GTEx-brain predictors to 40,299 schizophrenia cases and 65,264 matched controls for a large transcriptomic imputation study of schizophrenia. We identified 413 genic associations across 13 brain regions. Stepwise conditioning identified 67 non-MHC genes, of which 14 did not fall within previous GWAS loci. We identified 36 significantly enriched pathways, including hexosaminidase-A deficiency, and multiple porphyric disorder pathways. We investigated developmental expression patterns among the 67 non-MHC genes and identified specific groups of pre- and postnatal expression.

The design and assessment of development initiatives is increasingly participatory, where decision makers consider feedback from affected populations. While digital data collection facilitates faster and more reliable analysis, existing data collection tools are not optimized for unstructured qualitative (textual) data and peer-to-peer participant collaboration. In this paper, we propose a system called the Development Collaborative Assessment and Feedback Engine version 1.0 (DevCAFE), a customizable participatory assessment platform that collects and integrates quantitative assessment, qualitative feedback and peer-to-peer collaborative filtering. DevCAFE incorporates a library of statistical analyses for researchers to quickly identify quantitative and qualitative trends while collecting field data. DevCAFE can run on any mobile device with a Web-browser and can work with or without Internet connectivity. We present results from two pilot projects: (1) 137 participants evaluating family planning education trainings at three Nutrition Education Centers in rural Uganda, and (2) 4,518 participants evaluating policy priorities for elected leaders in the June 2015 Mexico mid-term elections. DevCAFE collected over 19,000 peer-to-peer ratings of 336 submitted ideas. Feedback gathered through DevCAFE enabled targeted reforms to the family planning efforts in Uganda and the need for increased government attention to public safety in Mexico. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). This work proposes itself through mathematical modeling, simulating the electrical interactions between two electrical generators, an induction generator and a synchronous generator connected to a common bus in steady state, subject to non-linear load. By comparing the modeling of the two machines, we can see that the induction generator will present best way for the harmonic currents flowing in common bus. Experimental tests have confirmed the results of comparative modeling of the electric generators. It was evident that the induction generator, in addition to increasing the active power to the electrical system, could reduce current harmonics components present at the connection point improving the voltage profile in the network.
