Increasingly stringent spectral spreading constraints are motivating a paradigm shift in the spectrum engineering of radar systems. Future spectrum requirements will likely dictate narrower spectral masks that will change based on geography. The desire to operate radar systems efficiently with waveforms that will provide desired detection capabilities must mesh with the need to meet spectral mask criteria. To this end, a collaborative research effort between Baylor University and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has resulted in the design of reconfigurable circuit and waveform approaches to optimize spectral confinement, power efficiency, and detection capabilities. This paper surveys the joint optimization approach and describes innovations by the authors in circuit and waveform reconfiguration that will be useful in future flexible radar transmitters. © 2013 IEEE.

Spectral spreading in radar systems is a concern that is related to the radar waveform. This paper describes a procedure to optimize a linear frequency-modulated chirp waveform for a desired ambiguity function while meeting spectral requirements. The minimax approach used for the optimization is described, and some example results for the optimization are presented. The integration of bench-top spectrum analyzer measurements into the optimization is presented, and the way forward in terms of measurement-based optimization is discussed. © 2013 IEEE.

In this abstract, we describe provenance traces generated from executions of scientific workflows managed by the Swift parallel scripting system. They follow a provenance data model, used by MTCProv, the provenance management component of Swift. It is similar to PROV, representing most of its core concepts and including additional information about the scientific domain, computational resource consumption, and prospective provenance. We describe provenance queries that follow patterns commonly found in high performance computing and that are straightforward to support with MTCProv's built-in procedures. These queries often involve costly relational join operations and recursion, providing a relevant case for benchmarking. © 2013 Authors.

The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2013 IEEE.

Dynamic adaptation is the customization of a business process to make it applicable to a particular situation at any time of its life cycle. Adapting requires experience, and involves knowledge about various, internal and external, aspects of business. Thus, we argue for the application of adaptation rules, considering the context of a particular process instance. Furthermore, we state that a context-based adaptation environment should go beyond, and learn from decisions, as well as continuously identify new unforeseen situations (context definitions). The aim of this paper is to present a computational engine that infers the need to update situations and adaptation rules, suggesting changes to them. An application scenario is presented to discuss the usage of the proposal.

With the increased worldwide popularity of social networking services (SNSs), the leakage of a user's private information is becoming a serious problem. An increased number of users now have multiple accounts on various social networks and they tend to use each account to write different user experiments. Aggregating information from different accounts leads to the unintended leakage of personal information. Therefore, we argue that SNS users should be vigilant in protecting the relationship between multiple accounts. In this paper, we propose the use of Account Reachability, a measure of privacy risk which demonstrates the possibility of a stranger finding a user's private account based on information in their public account. In addition, we present ARChecker, a tool to calculate the value of account reachability. ARChecker also provides advice on how to modify the user's profiles and messages to decrease the privacy risk. By checking the privacy measure and modifying the profiles and messages of their SNS accounts, users can protect their multiple accounts from the risk of an unintended leakage of personal information. © 2013 ACM.

This paper is concerned with the problem of identifying a discrete-time dynamical system model for a gene regulatory network with unknown topology using time series gene expression data. The topology of such a network can be characterized by a set of regulation hypotheses, one for each gene. In our earlier work, we formulated a convex optimization method to select the regulation hypotheses (and hence the network topology). In this paper, we further optimize the dynamics of the inferred network. Specifically, for a given topology, we minimize the l_2 distance between the experimental data and the model prediction. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm by identifying models for gene networks with known topology.

We identified and organized a number of statements about technical debt (TD Folklore list) expressed by practitioners in online websites, blogs and published papers. We chose 14 statements and we evaluated them through two surveys (37 practitioners answered the questionnaires), ranking them by agreement and consensus. The statements most agreed with show that TD is an important factor in software project management and not simply another term for “bad code”. This study will help the research community in identifying folklore that can be translated into research questions to be investigated, thus targeting attempts to provide a scientific basis for TD management.
