We report results of the study of the low-frequency noise in thin films of bismuth selenide topological insulators, which were mechanically exfoliated from bulk crystals via "graphene-like" procedures. From the resistance dependence on the film thickness, it was established that the surface conduction contributions to electron transport were dominant. It was found that the current fluctuations have the noise spectral density S1 ∞ l/f (where f is the frequency) for the frequency range up to 10 kHz. The obtained noise data are important for transport experiments with topological insulators and for any proposed device applications of these materials. © 2011 Materials Research Society.

Complexity and dynamism of day-to-day activities in organizations are inextricably linked, one impacting the other, increasing the challenges for constant adaptation on the way to organize work to address emerging demands. Market is demanding systems that are aware of organizations processes and able to evolve and adapt to new situations in everyday working activities. We argue that flexibility in processes could be managed in real time, by PAIS (Process-aware Information systems), using context information collected in the work environment. This paper proposes CGAdapt, a context management architecture approach that aims to improve and automate dynamic process adaptation. We explain how process adaptation may occur in real time through an existent scenario using this proposal and discuss the value of context-awareness to reason about process alternative adaptations in a goal oriented approach.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Numerical simulations using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity. Additionally, synthesis results point outs that the HPOABC architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2012 IEEE.

BPMN 2.0 is a widely used notation to model business process that has associated tools and techniques to facilitate process management, execution and monitoring. As a result using BPMN to model Software Development Process (SDP) can leverage on the BPMN's infrastructure to improve SDP quality. Nevertheless, when using BPMN to model Software Processes one can observe the lack of an important feature: means to represent process tailoring. This article introduces the BPMNt, a conservative extension to BPMN that aims at aggregating a tailoring representation mechanism as the one found at SPEM 2.0. BPMNt uses the extensibility classes already present in the BPMN meta-model. Our work also presents an example to illustrate the approach.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

The low-frequency 1/f noise in graphene transistors has been studied extensively owing to the proposed graphene applications in analog devices and communication systems [1-5]. The studies were motivated by the fact that the low-frequency noise can be up-converted by device nonlinearity and contribute to the phase noise of the system. Similarly, the sensor sensitivity is often limited by the electronic low-frequency noise. Therefore, noise is usually considered as one of the main limiting factors for the device or overall system operation. However, the electronic noise spectrum itself can be used as a sensing parameter increasing the sensor sensitivity and selectivity. Here, we show that vapors of different chemicals produce distinguishably different effects on the low-frequency noise spectra of the graphene-on-Si transistor. Our study showed that some gases change the electrical resistance of pristine graphene devices without changing their low-frequency noise spectra while other gases modify the noise spectra by inducing Lorentzian components with distinctive features. The characteristic corner frequency fC of the Lorentzian noise bulges in graphene devices is different for different chemicals and varies from fC=10 - 20 Hz for tetrahydrofuran to f C=1300 - 1600 Hz for chloroform. We tested the selected set of chemicals vapors on different graphene device samples and alternated different vapors for the same samples. The obtained results indicate that 1/f noise in combination with other sensing parameters can allow one to achieve the selective gas sensing with a single pristine graphene transistor. Our method of gas sensing with graphene does not require graphene surface functionalization or fabrication of an array of the devices with each tuned to a certain chemical. The observation of the Lorentzian components in the vapor-exposed graphene can also help in developing an accurate theoretical description of the noise mechanism in graphene. © 2012 IEEE.

Neurons in the medial entorhinal cortex of rats have been found to respond in a two-dimensional hexagonal "grid" pattern anchored to the environment. "Grid cells" with different spatial frequencies are thought to contribute to the creation of unimodal "place" cell responses useful for spatial navigation. In this paper we present results from an analog VLSI circuit that generates a hexagonal grid of activity using continuous attractor dynamics and transmits this pattern via neuron-like spikes. This circuit is a component of a larger system for modeling the neural circuits underlying mammalian spatial navigation.

The creation of tools, techniques and methodologies to support the manipulation of large data sets has been receiving special attention of both scientific and industrial communities, in order to discover new ways of dealing with the underlying information, including learning purposes, identification of patterns, decision making support, amongst others. However, making use of computing resources to enhance awareness and understanding of software information and the software itself is still a challenge in software/systems engineering, since it involves the identification of suitable mechanisms, adequate abstractions, and studies on stimulation of the human perceptive and cognitive abilities. This paper presents some of the challenges in this context, based on current trends of software development lifecycle, program comprehension, and software engineering education. At the end, a special focus is given on ongoing research on using and improving current mechanisms for supporting software reuse practices and software comprehension in general.

Due to tightening spectral criteria, joint optimization of radar transmitter waveform and circuit is considered to minimize the nonlinearity and waveform induced spectral spreading of radar transmitters. This work demonstrates the ACPR load-pull measurement of a power amplifier under excitation from two chirp waveforms. The results are compared to allow selection of the optimum chirp and transmitter load impedance. This work represents a beginning effort toward the real-time, computationally intelligent transmitter optimization in future reconfigurable radar systems.
