Nonlocal-means (NL-means) is an image denoising method that replaces each pixel by a weighted average of all the pixels in the image. Unfortunately, the method requires the computation of the weighting terms for all possible pairs of pixels, making it computationally expensive. Some short-cuts assign a weight of zero to any pixel pairs whose neighbourhood averages are too dissimilar. In this paper, we propose an alternative strategy that uses the SVD to more efficiently eliminate pixel pairs that are dissimilar. Experiments comparing this method against other NL-means speed-up strategies show that its refined discrimination between similar and dissimilar pixel neighbourhoods significantly improves the denoising effect.

Electronics densification is continuing at an unrelenting pace at the server, rack, and facility level. With increasing facility density levels, airflow management has become a major challenge and concern. In an effort to deal with the resulting thermal management challenges, manufacturers are increasingly turning to liquid cooling as a practical solution. The majority of manufacturers have turned to liquid-cooled enclosed racks or rear-door heat exchangers, in which chilled water is delivered to the racks. Some manufacturers are now looking to cold plate cooling solutions that take the heat directly off problem components, such as the CPUs, to get it directly out of the facility. This paper describes work done at the Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL) under a Department of Energy-funded program titled "Energy Smart Data Center." An 8.2 kW (27,980 Btu/h) rack of HP rx2600 2U servers has been converted from air-cooling to liquid spray cooling (CPUs only). The rack has been integrated into PNNL's main cluster and subjected to a suite of acceptance tests. Under the testing, the spray-cooled CPUs ran an average of 10°C (18°F) cooler than the air-cooled CPUs. Other peripheral devices, such as the memory D1MMs, ran an average of 8°C (14.4°F) cooler, and the power pod board was measured at 15°C(27°F) cooler. Since installation in July 2005, the rack has been undergoing a one-year uptime and reliability investigation. As part of the investigation, the rack has been subjected to monthly robustness testing and ongoing performance evaluation while running applications such as High Performance Linpack, parts of the NASA NPB-2 Benchmark Suite, and NW Chem. The rack has undergone three months' worth of robustness testing with no major events. Including the robustness testing, the rack uptime is at 95.54% over 299 days. This paper provides a novel algorithm for automatically extracting social hierarchy data from electronic communication behavior. The algorithm is based on data mining user behaviors to automatically analyze and catalog patterns of communications between entities in a email collection to extract social standing. The advantage to such automatic methods is that they extract relevancy between hierarchy levels and are dynamic over time. We illustrate the algorithms over real world data using the Enron corporation's email archive. The results show great promise when compared to the corporations work chart and judicial proceeding analyzing the major players. Copyright 2007 ACM.

We describe an improved implementation of a segmentation method for retinal blood vessels based on a multi- scale approach and region growing employing modules from the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK). We present the results of segmentation of retinal blood vessels using this improved method and compare these with results obtained using the original implementation in Matlab, as well as with expert manual segmentations obtained from a public database. We show that the ITK implementation achieves high quality segmentations with markedly improved computational efficiency. The ITK version has greater segmentation accuracy, from 0.94 to 0.96, than the Matlab version due to a decrease in FPR values and it is between 8 and 12 times faster than the original version. Furthermore, the ITK implementation is able to segment high-resolution images in an acceptable timescale.

There is a group of communication services that use resources from multiple domains in order to deliver their service. Authorization of the end-user is important for such services, because several domains are involved. There are no current solutions for delivering authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) to multi-domain services. In our study we present two architectures for the delivery of AAA to such services. The architectures are analyzed on their qualitative aspects. A result of this analysis is that direct interconnection of AAA servers is an effective architectural solution. In current multi-domain IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures, direct interconnection of AAA servers, such as the Home Subscriber Servers (HSS), is not yet possible. In this paper we argue and recommend to extend the IMS specification by adding a new interface to HSS in order to support the direct interconnection of HSS/AAA servers located in different IMS administrative domains.

The largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a network plays an important role in several network processes (e.g., synchronization of oscillators, percolation on directed networks, and linear stability of equilibria of network coupled systems). In this paper we develop approximations to the largest eigenvalue of adjacency matrices and discuss the relationships between these approximations. Numerical experiments on simulated networks are used to test our results.
