This paper provides a novel algorithm for automatically extracting social hierarchy data from electronic communication behavior. The algorithm is based on data mining user behaviors to automatically analyze and catalog patterns of communications between entities in a email collection to extract social standing. The advantage to such automatic methods is that they extract relevancy between hierarchy levels and are dynamic over time. We illustrate the algorithms over real world data using the Enron corporation's email archive. The results show great promise when compared to the corporations work chart and judicial proceeding analyzing the major players. Copyright 2007 ACM.

We describe an improved implementation of a segmentation method for retinal blood vessels based on a multi- scale approach and region growing employing modules from the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK). We present the results of segmentation of retinal blood vessels using this improved method and compare these with results obtained using the original implementation in Matlab, as well as with expert manual segmentations obtained from a public database. We show that the ITK implementation achieves high quality segmentations with markedly improved computational efficiency. The ITK version has greater segmentation accuracy, from 0.94 to 0.96, than the Matlab version due to a decrease in FPR values and it is between 8 and 12 times faster than the original version. Furthermore, the ITK implementation is able to segment high-resolution images in an acceptable timescale.

There is a group of communication services that use resources from multiple domains in order to deliver their service. Authorization of the end-user is important for such services, because several domains are involved. There are no current solutions for delivering authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) to multi-domain services. In our study we present two architectures for the delivery of AAA to such services. The architectures are analyzed on their qualitative aspects. A result of this analysis is that direct interconnection of AAA servers is an effective architectural solution. In current multi-domain IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures, direct interconnection of AAA servers, such as the Home Subscriber Servers (HSS), is not yet possible. In this paper we argue and recommend to extend the IMS specification by adding a new interface to HSS in order to support the direct interconnection of HSS/AAA servers located in different IMS administrative domains.

The largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a network plays an important role in several network processes (e.g., synchronization of oscillators, percolation on directed networks, and linear stability of equilibria of network coupled systems). In this paper we develop approximations to the largest eigenvalue of adjacency matrices and discuss the relationships between these approximations. Numerical experiments on simulated networks are used to test our results.

It has been a long-time dream in electronic structure theory in physical chemistry/chemical physics to compute ground state energies of atomic and molecular systems by employing a variational approach in which the two-body reduced density matrix (RDM) is the unknown variable. Realization of the RDM approach has benefited greatly from recent developments in semidefinite programming (SDP). We present the actual state of this new application of SDP as well as the formulation of these SDPs, which can be arbitrarily large. Numerical results using parallel computation on high performance computers are given. The RDM method has several advantages including robustness and provision of high accuracy compared to traditional electronic structure methods, although its computational time and memory consumption are still extremely large. © Springer-Verlag 2007.

The UNICORE grid system provides a seamless, secure and intuitive access to distributed grid resources. In recent years, UNICORE 5 is used as a well-tested grid middleware system in production grids (e.g. DEISA, D-Grid) and at many supercomputer centers world-wide. Beyond this production usage, UNICORE serves as a solid basis in many European and International research projects and business scenarios from T-systems, Philips Research, Intel, Fujitsu and others. To foster ongoing developments in multiple projects, UNICORE is open source under BSD license at SourceForge. More recently, the new Web services-based UNICORE 6 has become available that is based on open standards such as the Web services addressing (WS-A) and the Web services resource framework (WS-RF) and thus conforms to the open grid services architecture (OGSA) of the open grid forum (OGF). In this paper we present the evolution from production UNICORE 5 to the open standards-based UNICORE 6 and its various Web services-based interfaces. It describes the interface integration of emerging open standards such as OGSA-BES and OGSA-RUS and thus provides an overview of UNICORE 6.

Evaluation of a computer-Based System for Plus Disease Diagnosis in Retinopathy of Prematurity

Objective: To measure accuracy and reliability of the computer-based Retinal Image Multiscale Analysis (RISA) system compared with those of recognized retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) experts, for plus disease diagnosis. Design: Evaluation of diagnostic test or technology. Participants: Eleven recognized ROP experts and the RISA image analysis system interpreted a set of 20 wide-angle retinal photographs for presence of plus disease. Methods: All experts used a secure Web site to review independently 20 images for presence of plus disease. Images were also analyzed by measuring individual computer-based system parameters (integrated curvature [IC], diameter, and tortuosity index) for arterioles and venules and by computing linear combinations and logical combinations of those parameters. Performance was compared with a reference standard, defined as the majority vote of experts. Main Outcome Measures: Diagnostic accuracy was measured by calculating sensitivity, specificity, and receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (AUC) for plus disease diagnosis by each expert, and by each computer-based system parameter, compared with the reference standard. Diagnostic agreement was measured by calculating the mean κ value of each expert compared with all other experts and the mean κ value of each computer-based system parameter compared with all experts. Results: Among the 11 experts, sensitivity ranged from 0.167 to 1.000, specificity ranged from 0.714 to 1.000, AUC ranged from 0.798 to 1.000, and mean κ compared with all other experts ranged from 0.288 to 0.689. Among individual computer system parameters, arteriolar IC had the highest diagnostic accuracy, with sensitivity of 1.000;specificity, 0.846;and AUC, 0.962. Arteriolar IC had the highest diagnostic agreement with experts, with a mean κ value of 0.578. Conclusions: A computer-based image analysis system has the potential to perform comparably to recognized ROP experts for plus disease diagnosis. © 2007

Dependency-aware unequal erasure protection codes

Classical unequal erasure protection schemes split data to be protected into classes which are encoded independently. The unequal protection scheme presented in this paper is based on an erasure code which encodes all the data together according to the existing dependencies. A simple algorithm generates dynamically the generator matrix of the erasure code according to the packets streams structure, i.e., the dependencies between the packets, and the rate of the code. This proposed erasure code was applied to a packetized MPEG4 stream transmitted over a packet erasure channel and compared with other classical protection schemes in terms of PSNR and MOS. It is shown that the proposed code allows keeping a high video quality-level in a larger packet loss rate range than the other protection schemes.

In this paper, the authors considered a single-species model with stage-structure in a polluted ecological environment. Subject to the outside toxin input quantity being stable, the authors established the sufficient conditions under which the species will be permanent using Lyapunov method. At the same time biological implications briefly of these results are discussed.
