Smart cities promise a lot of well-being to their users in all areas of life through millions of applications and services. Smart services rely heavily on collecting data and the preferences of users. But on the dark side, the users' information is posed to threat and penetration during transmission or stored far in the clouds. Depending on encryption only is not sufficient if the attacker has strong resources or if the attacker is the service provider (SP) itself. In addition, changing data before sending is not a practical solution in many systems because of the adverse impact on the quality of a main service. This research presented a new idea to address the issue of protection. The proposed method enhanced the privacy and security of users' data without affecting the accuracy of service. The core of the suggested solution relies on a knowledge base of services that are managed by experts. Also, the solution depends on fog nodes to measure the level of security and privacy of users' queries without delay. Moreover, the fog nodes manage contact with SPs. Finally, the proposed method divided the SP into two, one for user queries and the other for user data. The simulation and analytical discussion on a practical case in smart cities demonstrated the superiority of the proposed approach over previous methods in the level of protection by maintaining the quality of services, and the resistance to attacks. © 2023 Bharati Vidyapeeth, New Delhi.

Most operating systems implement their own power management techniques, but it is hard to modify or hack their power policies without the source code. Many dynamic power management architectures have been proposed in the literature, but they are not integrated with the underlying OS power manager. In this work, we propose a software framework for user-level power management, with a flexible architecture to be adapted to different policies and integrated with OS power managers.

This paper presents an ontology modeling and engineering approach to semantic description and integration of product development processes. Using OWL and OWL-S, the proposed method formalizes the underlying semantic representations of the product development process in domain object ontologies and the generic problem solving structures in domain task ontologies. Both the domain object and task ontologies are incorporated in the OWL-S based application service ontologies to facilitate the semantic process description and semantic service discovery, composition in the integration of product development processes. The approach has been applied to the development of ontological models for the consumer product development process in a pilot project of a national research program in Singapore namely the Integrated Manufacturing and Service systems (IMSS).

This paper applies two-phase time aggregation to solve discounted Markov decision processes (MDP). This procedure, recently proposed for average cost MDPs, is extended here discounted MDPs with a view at easing the computational burden associated to finding a quality solution within a reasonable time frame. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results.

We investigate the use of animal videos (observations) to improve Reinforcement Learning (RL) efficiency and performance in navigation tasks with sparse rewards. Motivated by theoretical considerations, we make use of weighted policy optimization for off-policy RL and describe the main challenges when learning from animal videos. We propose solutions and test our ideas on a series of 2D navigation tasks. We show how our methods can leverage animal videos to improve performance over RL algorithms that do not leverage such observations. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper deals with the optimization of grounding grids geometry. The goal is to reduce the amount of material to deploy a grounding grid, while keeping the system security. The touch voltages, step voltages, GPR and ground resistance are parameters of grounding grids and are related to safety aspect. Also discussed is a genetic algorithm used for optimizing ground grids, which can assume any form in a limited space of the project. The simulation is based in images method. The results are presented and discussed.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

In an attempt to assist proctors to prevent test takers from academic dishonesty in remotely administrated exams, this study investigated the ability of test takers' behaviors during online assessments to predict their cheating decisions. Specifically, this experimental study focused on the role of students' time delay and certainty rating during lab based online testing sessions. The analysis of hierarchical logistic regression indicated that not only time delay but also certainty rating had significantly statistical relation to test takers' cheating decisions. The importance of the two proposed factors during online assessments was discussed and the prospects of the improvements of online proctoring systems were addressed. © Cognitive Science Society, CogSci *** rights reserved.

A step-based tutoring system for linear circuit analysis is being developed with the capabilities to automatically generate circuit problems with specified characteristics, including randomly generated topologies and element values. The system further generates fully-worked, error-free solutions using the methods typically taught in such classes, and accepts a rich variety of student input such as equations, matrix equations, numerical and multiple-choice answers, re-drawn circuit diagrams, and sketches of waveforms. A randomized, controlled study was conducted using paid student volunteers to compare the effectiveness of two of our tutorials in comparison to working conventional textbook-based problems. The average learning gain was only 3/100 points for the textbook users, but 29/100 points, about 10 times higher, for the tutorial users. The effect size on the post-test scores was 1.21 pooled standard deviations (Cohen d-value) and was statistically significant. A motivational survey administered to these students yielded a 0.53 point higher rating for the software than for the textbook (on a 1-5 scale). The system is being used in Spring 2013 by over 340 students in EEE 202 at Arizona State and two community colleges. About 99% of these students rated the system as “very helpful” or “somewhat helpful”.

Deals with Lyapunov equations for continuous-time Markov jump linear systems (MJLS). We focus on the case in which the Markov chain has a countably infinite state space. It is shown that the infinite MJLS is stochastically stabilizable (SS) if and only if the associated countably infinite coupled Lyapunov equations have a unique norm bounded strictly positive solution. This result does not hold for mean square stabilizability (MSS), since SS and MSS are no longer equivalent in our set up. To some extent, tools from operator theory in Banach space and, in particular, from semigroup theory are the technical underpinning of the paper.
