In the FANTOM5 project, transcription initiation events across the human and mouse genomes were mapped at a single base-pair resolution and their frequencies were monitored by CAGE (Cap Analysis of Gene Expression) coupled with single-molecule sequencing. Approximately three thousands of samples, consisting of a variety of primary cells, tissues, cell lines, and time series samples during cell activation and development, were subjected to a uniform pipeline of CAGE data production. The analysis pipeline started by measuring RNA extracts to assess their quality, and continued to CAGE library production by using a robotic or a manual workflow, single molecule sequencing, and computational processing to generate frequencies of transcription initiation. Resulting data represents the consequence of transcriptional regulation in each analyzed state of mammalian cells. Non-overlapping peaks over the CAGE profiles, approximately 200,000 and 150,000 peaks for the human and mouse genomes, were identified and annotated to provide precise location of known promoters as well as novel ones, and to quantify their activities.

This article presents a system for tracking the position of objects within a smart home to support a robot assistant in pick-and-place tasks. The current system is capable of estimating the position of an object using the signal strength received by a mobile device in a ZigBee sensor network. Received strength signal indication measurements were done in laboratory for applying a estimation method. Two models were utilized (a) log-distance path loss - model in which signal lost has a random influence with log-normal distribution, and (b) free space decay law - based on the decay law for a signal on a open space. Experiments with satisfactory results were done with a public dataset to benchmark our data.

A step-based tutoring system for linear circuit analysis is being developed with the capabilities to automatically generate circuit problems with specified characteristics, including randomly generated topologies and element values. The system further generates fully-worked, error-free solutions using the methods typically taught in such classes, and accepts a rich variety of student input such as equations, matrix equations, numerical and multiple-choice answers, re-drawn circuit diagrams, and sketches of waveforms. A randomized, controlled study was conducted using paid student volunteers to compare the effectiveness of two of our tutorials in comparison to working conventional textbook-based problems. The average learning gain was only 3/100 points for the textbook users, but 29/100 points, about 10 times higher, for the tutorial users. The effect size on the post-test scores was 1.21 pooled standard deviations (Cohen d-value) and was statistically significant. A motivational survey administered to these students yielded a 0.53 point higher rating for the software than for the textbook (on a 1-5 scale). The system is being used in Spring 2013 by over 340 students in EEE 202 at Arizona State and two community colleges. About 99% of these students rated the system as “very helpful” or “somewhat helpful”.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications are currently an appealing concept for organizations with a small budget for IT infrastructure investment. By definition, in a SaaS setup, companies subscribe software applications on a pay-per-use system from external service providers over the internet. However, managers are looking for a decision framework that can be used to prioritize business software applications for migration into a SaaS environment. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by proposing a hybrid methodology which is composed of a total system life cycle (SLC) cost analysis for cost estimation and the analytic network process (ANP) for prioritization. Real test case data is used to validate the decision making capability of the framework. Sensitivity analysis was done to determine the robustness of the recommendations using Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the proposed methodology could aid managers prioritizes software application projects for SaaS migration.

In response to our nation's cry for more engineers, this paper describes how a major university has leveraged four NSF program grants to produce a highly successful program focused on retention, graduation, and graduate degrees. One of the programs is for lower division students, one is for upper division transfer students, one is for non-transfer upper division students and graduate students that have come up through the system, and one is for upper division students who come from five selected non-metropolitan community colleges in Arizona. The last program ties everything all together with a Transfer Student Center, a place for the S-STEM Academic Scholarship Success Class to meet, a place to host potential transfer students, and a place for transfer students to study and network. An emphasis of all of these programs is the encouragement and support of female and underrepresented minority students and students with unmet financial need. These programs have attained a 90-95% retention rate. For upper division transfer students not in the program, the graduation rate is about 70% for males and 64% for females. The transfer GPA shock was shown to be negligent for new program transfer students, compared with a half grade point drop for new upper division transfer students not in the program. Most importantly, during the past three years over 50% of the graduated scholarship students have gone right on to graduate school full-time. Seventy percent of the transfer students who did not intend to go to graduate school when they matriculated to Arizona State University, but who have now chosen to go on to graduate school, have reported that this program was a major influence in this decision change. Several of the students are now in PhD programs preparing to become professors. Even though parts of this program have been in existence for nearly 10 years, this is a continual work in progress as we strive for more excellence. This paper highlights the successes of being abl
