Online social media users react to content in them based on context. Emotions or mood play a significant part of these reactions, which has filled these platforms with opinionated content. Different approaches and applications to make better use of this data are continuously being developed. However, due to the nature of the data, the variety of platforms, and dynamic online user behavior, there are still many issues to be dealt with. It remains a challenge to properly obtain a reliable emotional status from a user prior to posting a comment. This work introduces a methodology that explores semi-supervised multilingual emotion detection based on the overlap of Facebook reactions and textual data. With the resulting emotion detection system we evaluate the possibility of using emotions and user behavior features for the task of sarcasm detection. More than 1 million English and Chinese comments from over 62,000 public Facebook pages posts have been collected and processed, conducted experiments show acceptable performance metrics. This article presents a parameter study on the applied game theory in Genetic Algorithm (GA), performing an analysis of the game Prisoner's Dilemma applied in the solution of four constrained Engineering problems. Simulations were applied in four different variations of the game, in order to find the best configuration for the analyzed problems. Then, after obtaining the best configuration of the game, we performed an analysis of the incidence of Alpha and Beta weights, present in GA fitness with Social Interaction, using the game that best suited each problem, employing sixteen different weight configurations. At end, the results obtained authenticated the influence of the Social Interaction process in the essence of GA.

This special issue of Practicing Anthropology presents multidisciplinary and multisectoral views of a community engaged health disparities project titled "Health Disparities in Jail Populations: Converging Epidemics of Infectious Disease, Chronic Illness, Behavioral Health, and Substance Abuse." The overall project incorporated traditional anthropological mixed-methods approaches with theory and methods from informatics, epidemiology, genomics, evolutionary and computational biology, community engagement, and applied/translational science.

Education professionals are always searching for new ways of promoting learning, either by modifying the pedagogical project of courses or by the adoption of new learning strategies. In particular, this paper presents the results of an effort in order to bridge the knowledge acquired by students within classroom in face-to-face classes with technical skills required in real life situations. The contribution presented in this paper is the result of an assignment applied within an undergraduate Data Network Infrastructure Design course in a Brazilian university using an adapted Problem-Based Learning methodology (PBL), as a motivational tool. This paper also presents and discusses the resulting data related to the learning assessment.

Despite over a decade of research and development in fall detection systems, accurate and reliable systems in use are few. The existing fall detection approaches leave three major challenges unsolved: (1) insufficient fall data for model training process, (2) unreliable labeling of ground truth, and (3) resorting to artificial falls to model falls. In this paper we highlight these challenges in a clinical study with community-dwelling adults. The data collected from the real world reveal significant differences between artificial falls and actual falls, and also to illuminate the limitations of existing algorithms. We further make recommendations for future work, based on the challenges, experience, and lessons we learned from this study.

The use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is considerably increasing, mainly due to their inherent low cost and wide range of applications. The formation of a WSN is driven by a request-based procedure that associates sensor nodes to a PAN (Personal Area Network) coordinator. In the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the communication exchanges between a node willing to join the network and the PAN coordinator follows a CSMA/CA protocol. In this paper, we propose a set of specific improvements for the enhancement of the nodes joining procedure. The goal is to reduce the time spent in the association process, minimizing the time spent to deploy the network. A simulation assessment of the proposed set of improvements was performed using the OMNeT++/Castalia simulator, comparing their usage with the default mechanism defined by the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The achieved results demonstrate that an adequate definition of the parameters of the CSMA/CA protocol significantly reduces the duration of the association procedure.
