The current state of the world economy has made Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) an appealing concept for organizations with a small budget for IT infrastructure investment. In a SaaS setup, companies subscribe software applications on a pay-per-use system from external service providers over the internet. However, these companies are looking for a decision framework that can be used to prioritize business software applications for SaaS migration. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by proposing a hybrid methodology which is composed of a total system life cycle (SLC) cost analysis for cost estimation and the analytic network process (ANP) for prioritization. Real test case data is used to validate the decision making capability of the framework. Sensitivity analysis was done to determine the robustness of the recommendations using Monte Carlo simulation. Teaching Software Engineering (SE) based on “real-world” projects engages students with practical application of software engineering concepts-students develop a deeper interest in the project deliverables while they acquire the skills of critically analyzing the problem and determining the best course of action. It can be challenging to find and maintain a reliable stream of suitable software projects that match learning outcomes, technical scope, and academic calendar of an SE class. On the other hand, a typical university campus has many nonComputer Science (CS) technology classes that require their students to study, understand, and evaluate existing software applications in specific areas. With purposeful coordination, these non-CS technology classes can serve as effective source of real projects for SE classes. This paper describes our experience of collaborating with the Education program in their Technology in Education course. While we encountered some challenges, our experience has demonstrated that it is indeed mutually beneficial and rewarding for students in both courses. We offer recommendations on choosing non-CS technology classes and logistical guidelines to ensure the success of such collaborations.

In response to our nation's cry for more engineers, this paper describes how a major university has leveraged four NSF program grants to produce a highly successful program focused on retention, graduation, and graduate degrees. One of the programs is for lower division students, one is for upper division transfer students, one is for non-transfer upper division students and graduate students that have come up through the system, and one is for upper division students who come from five selected non-metropolitan community colleges in Arizona. The last program ties everything all together with a Transfer Student Center, a place for the S-STEM Academic Scholarship Success Class to meet, a place to host potential transfer students, and a place for transfer students to study and network. An emphasis of all of these programs is the encouragement and support of female and underrepresented minority students and students with unmet financial need. These programs have attained a 90-95% retention rate. For upper division transfer students not in the program, the graduation rate is about 70% for males and 64% for females. The transfer GPA shock was shown to be negligent for new program transfer students, compared with a half grade point drop for new upper division transfer students not in the program. Most importantly, during the past three years over 50% of the graduated scholarship students have gone right on to graduate school full-time. Seventy percent of the transfer students who did not intend to go to graduate school when they matriculated to Arizona State University, but who have now chosen to go on to graduate school, have reported that this program was a major influence in this decision change. Several of the students are now in PhD programs preparing to become professors. Weighted graphs obtained from co-occurrence in user-item relations lead to non-metric topologies. We use this semi-metric behavior to issue recommendations, and discuss its relationship to transitive closure on fuzzy graphs. Finally, we test the performance of this method against other item- and user-based recommender systems on the Movie lens benchmark. We show that including highly semi-metric edges in our recommendation algorithms leads to better recommendations.

The creation of tools, techniques and methodologies to support the manipulation of large data sets has been receiving special attention of both scientific and industrial communities, in order to discover new ways of dealing with the underlying information, including learning purposes, identification of patterns, decision making support, amongst others. However, making use of computing resources to enhance awareness and understanding of software information and the software itself is still a challenge in software/systems engineering, since it involves the identification of suitable mechanisms, adequate abstractions, and studies on stimulation of the human perceptive and cognitive abilities. This paper presents some of the challenges in this context, based on current trends of software development lifecycle, program comprehension, and software engineering education. At the end, a special focus is given on ongoing research on using and improving current mechanisms for supporting software reuse practices and software comprehension in general.

An interest in the fluorescent protein asFP595 is due to unexplained puzzles in its photophysical behavior. We report the results of calculations of structures, absorption, and emission bands in asFP595 by considering model molecular clusters in the coordinate-locking scheme. Both trans and cis conformations of the anionic chromophore are considered. Equilibrium geometry coordinates on the ground potential energy surface were optimized in the density functional theory approaches by considering both large- and reduced-size clusters. The cluster size was reduced to locate positions of the minimum energy points on the excited-state potential surface by using the configuration interaction singles approach. Vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths were computed by using the ZINDO method. We show that consideration of large clusters mimicking the protein-containing pocket is an essential issue to calculate positions of absorption and emission bands with the accuracy compatible to experiments.
