Context awareness perspectives for mobile personal media

Dr. Lehikoinen's current research interests include human– computer interaction especially from the interaction and collaboration point of view and mobile augmented reality.

This article reviews the ongoing evolution of context awareness technologies in mobile devices using personal media as an illustrative application domain. Augmented with metadata, files containing personal media can include significant information about the contexts they describe. The article discusses personal media applications from two different perspectives: (1) through an example that describes the use of context data in a personal media diary application, and (2) with a classification of context architectures that includes three classes of context-aware mobile systems (inbound, shared, and network assisted). These systems are classified on the basis of such factors as their architecture, data flow types, privacy, and interoperability requirements. The article concludes by discussing implications for research and practice.

This paper presents MODENA, an architecture for scientific models management using Computational Grid platform. This architecture is comprised of two systems: ModManager and ModRunner. ModManager deals with knowledge management about scientific models, acting as a scientific models library allowing for cataloguing, searching, reutilization and generation of new models. To achieve this, a metamodel is proposed to classify models, in order to support the organization, searching and retrieving of models. ModRunner manages the execution of models in a Grid environment allowing for model composition to generate a scientific Grid Workflow to be executed by distributed services offered by Grid Services. An initial prototype of ModManager is presented.

The Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada has been offering a Master's degree program in Internetworking since 1997. The program also provides comprehensive "hands-on" laboratory experience in configuring, maintaining, troubleshooting and simulating networks. The university intends to increase its student base through online education retaining the same quality of interactions as the onsite program. In the online context, the design and the implementation of an effective remote interactive laboratory (RIL) environment is highly challenging on account of the special hardware, simulation and computing needs of the Internetworking courses. This paper focuses on translating the onsite laboratory elements into the online RIL environment by allowing students at geographically remote sites to access and interact with internetworking devices located at Halifax. The RIL is devised using de-facto networking standards, free software and commercial Internet browser. Real-time interaction and information transfer with the Halifax site are achieved independent of the technology available to the remote student. The RIL design and delivery mechanism are tailored to i) provide a constructivist pedagogical approach ii) model a collaborative learning environment for group interaction iii) match the characteristics of the delivery media to specific learning processes (media-synchronicity theory) including the provision of unambiguous feedback and guidance iv) assign appropriate instructional roles and v) determine desirable student competency outcomes;all in a remote learning context. A 4-tier role architecture consisting of faculty, facilitators at both local and remote sites and students, has been determined appropriate and adapted to maintain academic integrity and offer the same quality of interaction as the onsite program.

The Hopfield and bi-directional associative memory (TJAM) models are well developed and carefully studied models tor associative memory that are patterned after the memory structure of the animal brain. Their basic limitation is that they can only perform associations between at most two sets of patterns. Several different models for generalized associative memory are proposed. These models are all extensions or generalizations of the Hopfield and RAM models that can perform multiple associations. Extensive software simulations are conducted to evaluate the different models, using the memory capacity as basis tor comparing their performance. Lastly, potential application of these models as data fusion systems is explored. © 2004 Fuji Technology Press. All rights reserved.

At 70 miles per hour, overcoming aerodynamic drag represents about 65% of the total energy expenditure for a typical heavy truck vehicle. The goal of this US Department of Energy supported consortium is to establish a clear understanding of the drag producing flow phenomena. This is being accomplished through joint experiments and computations, leading to the 'smart' design of drag reducing devices. This paper will describe our objective and approach, provide an overview of our efforts and accomplishments, and discuss our future direction. © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

An active research experience for undergraduates (REU) was discussed. Research experience for undergraduate students provides educational experience through specially designed active research projects. A quasi-experimental design was applied to analyze the impact of REU on academic achievements. Retention rates, cummulative grade point average (GPA) and overall academic persistence measured by ratio of earned and attempted credit hours were also analyzed. Educational outcomes such as obtaining graduate education and employment were measured.

We explore the idea of creating a subjectivity classifier that uses lists of subjective nouns learned by bootstrapping algorithms. The goal of our research is to develop a system that can distinguish subjective sentences from objective sentences. First, we use two bootstrapping algorithms that exploit extraction patterns to learn sets of subjective nouns. Then we train a Naive Bayes classifier using the subjective nouns, discourse features, and subjectivity clues identified in prior research. The bootstrapping algorithms learned over 1000 subjective nouns, and the subjectivity classifier performed well, achieving 77% recall with 81% precision. © 2003 Proceedings of the 7th Conference on Natural Language Learning, CoNLL 2003 at HLT-NAACL 2003.
