The Level 1 Muon Trigger subsystem for BTeV will be implemented using the same architectural building blocks as the BTeV Level 1 Pixel Trigger: pipelined field programmable gate arrays feeding a farm of dedicated processing elements. The muon trigger algorithm identifies candidate tracks, and is sensitive to the muon charge (sign);candidate dimuon events are identified by complementary charge track-pairs. To insure that the trigger is operating effectively, the trigger development team is actively collaborating in an independent multi-university research program for reliable, self-aware, fault adaptive behavior in real-time embedded systems (RTES). Key elements of the architecture, algorithm, performance, and engineered reliability are presented.

Not only have self-organizing maps (SOMs), such as the WEBSOM, been shown to scale up to very large datasets, these maps also allow for a novel mode of navigating through a large collection of text documents. The entire text collection is presented to a user as a regular map, where each point in the map is associated to a group of documents that are likely to be composed of similar terms and phrases. In addition, the closer two points are in the map, the more similar are their respective associated documents. Thus, once an interesting document is found in the map, the user just has to click around the vicinity of that document to retrieve other similar documents. A major drawback of SOMs, however, is the long training time required, especially for document collections where both the volume and the dimensionality are huge. We demonstrate how the size of the initial text collection is progressively and drastically reduced from the raw document collection to the final SOM-based text archive. We demonstrate this using a widely studied Reuters collection.

We present new simulation results, in which a computational model of interacting visual neurons simultaneously predicts the modulation of spatial vision thresholds by focal visual attention, for five dual-task human psychophysics experiments. This new study complements our previous findings that attention activates a winner-take-all competition among early visual neurons within one cortical hypercolumn. This "intensified competition" hypothesis assumed that attention equally affects all neurons, and yielded two single-unit predictions: an increase in gain and a sharpening of tuning with attention. While both effects have been separately observed in electrophysiology, no single-unit study has yet shown them simultaneously. Hence, we here explore whether our model could still predict our data if attention might only modulate neuronal gain, but do so non-uniformly across neurons and tasks. Specifically, we investigate whether modulating the gain of only the neurons that are loudest, best-tuned, or most informative about the stimulus, or of all neurons equally but in a task-dependent manner, may account for the data. We find that none of these hypotheses yields predictions as plausible as the intensified competition hypothesis, hence providing additional support for our original findings.

Deals with Lyapunov equations for continuous-time Markov jump linear systems (MJLS). We focus on the case in which the Markov chain has a countably infinite state space. It is shown that the infinite MJLS is stochastically stabilizable (SS) if and only if the associated countably infinite coupled Lyapunov equations have a unique norm bounded strictly positive solution. This result does not hold for mean square stabilizability (MSS), since SS and MSS are no longer equivalent in our set up. To some extent, tools from operator theory in Banach space and, in particular, from semigroup theory are the technical underpinning of the paper.
