Future space structures like the proposed Lunar Gateway may benefit from autonomous inspection and maintenance, especially during extended uncrewed periods. Small satellites (SmallSats) offer a low-cost alternative to human extravehicular activities (EVAs) for performing these tasks. However, SmallSats have a high failure rate, particularly with propulsion systems, often causing mission failures. This work is motivated by this failure rate and considers a multi-agent approach to SmallSat inspection as a way of increasing mission success through redundancy. The added risk of the multi-agent approach, namely collision risk during thruster or other system failures, is addressed. We propose a collision-aware path-planning strategy based on the Anytime Dynamic A* (AD*) algorithm, enabling efficient initial path generation and dynamic replanning in response to failures. Implementation considerations like collisionchecking in a high-fidelity simulation environment are discussed. The proposed strategy is demonstrated in a case study multi-agent inspection scenario around simulated Lunar Gateway geometry, where one SmallSat experiences a thruster failure, prompting other agents to replan their paths. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. This paper introduces a novel approach to model and stabilize a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) by employing Oscillating Water Columns (OWC) as an active structural control system. The innovative concept involves designing a new floating barge-like platform with integrated OWCs on opposite sides of the platform to mitigate undesired oscillations of the system. These OWCs counteract the bending forces caused by wind on the tower and waves on the barge platform. To synchronize the opposing forces with the system’s tilting, a proposed Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System-based airflow control strategy is employed. Through manipulation of the barge platform’s pitch angle, the ANFIS airflow control system adjusts the valves on either side, opening one and closing the other accordingly. Simulation results, compared with a standard FOWT demonstrate the effectiveness of the ANFIS airflow control. It is shown to be superior in reducing platform pitching and the fore-aft translation of the tower top. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Magnetohydrodynamics is a phenomenon that can be harnessed during planetary entry to augment aerodynamic drag and may enable higher mass payloads to safely reach the surface. The magnetohydrodynamic force is quantified over a wide range of freestream conditions using computational fluid dynamics results from a previous study. The force is calculated for an array of small electromagnets, a large non-superconducting magnet, a large superconducting magnet, and a uniform field. The superconducting magnet produces a magnetohydrodynamic force within an order of magnitude of aerodynamic drag for velocities higher than 10 km/s, indicating that it may have a reasonable impact on the trajectory for some cases. The array of small magnets and non-superconducting magnet produced a magnetohydrodynamic force that is less than 1% of the aerodynamic drag, so their magnetic fields are not strong enough to affect an entry trajectory. Additionally, the magnet placement plays an important role in magnetohydrodynamic force magnitude, with a magnet located near the shoulder producing approximately eight times more force than a magnet placed on the axis of symmetry. A mass and power budget for each magnet configuration is given assuming current state-of-the-art magnet technology. Convergence of energy-based learning in linear resistive networks

Energy-based learning algorithms are alternatives to backpropagation and are well-suited to distributed implementations in analog electronic devices. However, a rigorous theory of convergence is lacking. We make a first step in this direction by analysing a particular energy-based learning algorithm, Contrastive Learning, applied to a network of linear adjustable resistors. Game Theory in Formula 1: Multi-agent Physical and Strategical Interactions

This paper presents an optimization framework for Formula 1 racing that integrates multi-agent interactions, aerodynamic wake effects, trajectory optimization, and energy management. By employing game-theoretic methods, we formulate the minimum lap time problem as either a Nash or a Stackelberg game. Exploiting their structural similarities, we compare symmetric and hierarchical strategies to analyze competitive racing dynamics and strategic dominance. Additionally, we introduce an algorithm to refine local Stackelberg solutions. Our findings underscore the importance of jointly optimizing physical interactions, energy management, and trajectory, highlighting their strong interdependence. We examine the impact of slipstreaming on trajectory selection in corners, straights, and high-speed sections, while also identifying optimal overtaking locations based on energy allocation strategies. By incorporating a physically accurate interaction model and accounting for the optimal responses of competing agents, our approach reveals characteristic strategic behaviors observed in real-world racing. The proposed methodology contributes towards realistic Formula 1 race strategy optimizations, with potential applications in motorsport engineering and autonomous racing. Towards explainable data-driven predictive control with regularizations

Data-driven predictive control (DPC), using linear combinations of recorded trajectory data, has recently emerged as a popular alternative to traditional model predictive control (MPC). Without an explicitly enforced prediction model, the effects of commonly used regularization terms—and the resulting predictions—can be opaque. This opacity may lead to practical challenges, such as reliance on empirical tuning of regularization parameters based on closed-loop performance, and potentially misleading heuristic interpretations of norm-based regularizations. However, by examining the structure of the underlying optimal control problem (OCP), more precise and insightful interpretations of regularization effects can be derived. In this paper, we demonstrate how to analyze the predictive behavior of DPC through implicit predictors and the trajectory-specific effects of quadratic regularization. We further extend these results to cover typical DPC modifications, including DPC for affine systems, offset regularizations, slack variables, and terminal constraints. Additionally, we provide a simple but general result on (recursive) feasibility in DPC. This work aims to enhance the explainability and reliability of DPC by providing a deeper understanding of these regularization mechanisms. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Nonlinear Bandwidth and Bode Diagrams based on Scaled Relative Graphs

Scaled Relative Graphs (SRGs) provide a novel graphical frequency domain method for the analysis of nonlinear systems. In this paper, we use the restriction of the SRG to particular input spaces to compute frequency-dependent gain bounds for incrementally stable nonlinear systems. This leads to a nonlinear (NL) generalization of the Bode diagram, where the sinusoidal, harmonic, and subharmonic inputs are considered separately. When applied to the analysis of the NL loop transfer and sensitivity, we define a notion of bandwidth for both the open-loop and closed-loop, compatible with the LTI definitions. We illustrate the power of our method on the analysis of a DC motor with a parasitic nonlinearity, verifying our results in simulations. © 2025, CC BY.

Automated synthesis of fixed structure QFT prefilter using piecewise linear approximation based linear programming optimization techniques

Prefilter synthesis is one of the important design steps of Horowitz's quantitative feedback theory (QFT) to robust feedback system synthesis. The prefilter is designed to achieve tracking specifications. In this paper, a new, computationally efficient approach for automation of the prefilter design step is proposed. A linear programming based algorithm is proposed for the automatic synthesis of fixed structure QFT prefilter. In present work, prefilter synthesis problem is posed as a piecewise linear approximation based linear programming problem and solved with GUROBI optimizer *** proposed method is validated using a benchmark problem and a simple, low order prefilter is obtained in quick time. © 2016, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. A moving horizon estimator for aquifer thermal energy storages

Aquifer thermal energy storages (ATES) represent groundwater saturated aquifers that store thermal energy in the form of heated or cooled groundwater. Combining two ATES, one can harness excess thermal energy from summer (heat) and winter (cold) to support the building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technology. In general, a dynamic operation of ATES throughout the year is beneficial to avoid using fossil fuel-based HVAC technology and maximize the "green use" of ATES. Model predictive control (MPC) with an appropriate system model may become a crucial control approach for ATES systems. Consequently, the MPC model should reflect spatial temperature profiles around ATES’ boreholes to predict extracted groundwater temperatures accurately. However, meaningful predictions require the estimation of the current state of the system, as measurements are usually only at the borehole of the ATES. In control, this is often realized by model-based observers. Still, observing the state of an ATES system is non-trivial, since the model is typically hybrid. We show how to exploit the specific structure of the hybrid ATES model and design an easy-to-solve moving horizon estimator based on a quadratic program. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.
