Water-drum boilers (i.e., steam generators) are commonly used in power plants and other related industries. In the coming years, these boilers are expected to be operated over a broad range of operational scenarios, such as when the steam-to-boiler load changes due to variations in the electrical power as a result of renewable integration. The boiler system is multivariable in nature, and its behaviour changes considerably over a wide range of operational scenarios. However, exploring advanced control solutions to improve boiler operability is challenging due to the lack of experiments conducted on industrial boilers. Hence, a lab-scale experimental boiler is designed for control system research and education. This setup has a multivariable structure and exhibits a similar dynamic to the industrial boiler. Moreover, it is relatively simple to experiment on, in comparison with the real-world boiler. Thus, students and researchers are able to connect theory with practice and develop control solutions for practice. This paper presents the results of the experiments conducted on the lab boiler to develop a linear transfer function matrix model with parameter variations targeting robust control research.

The classical definition of network delay has been recently augmented by the concept of information timeliness, or Age of Information (AoI). We analyze the network delay and the AoI in a multi-hop satellite network that relays status updates from satellite 1, receiving uplink traffic from ground devices, to satellite K, using K-2 intermediate satellite nodes. The last node, K, is the closest satellite with connectivity to a ground station. The satellite formation is modeled as a queue network of M/M/1 systems connected in series. The scenario is then generalized for the case in which all satellites receive uplink traffic from ground, and work at the same time as relays of the packets from the previous nodes. The results show that the minimum average AoI is experienced at a decreasing system utilization when the number of nodes is increased. Furthermore, unloading the first nodes of the chain reduces the queueing time and therefore the average AoI. These findings provide insights for designing multihop satellite networks for latency-sensitive applications.

With the global consumption of fish outpacing population growth, aquaculture sector is facing challenges to address the rising demand of food and nutritional security. Integrative omics research provides a strong platform to understand the basic biology and translate this knowledge into sustainable solutions in tackling disease outbreak, increasing productivity thus ensuring food security. To further understand the complex biology of host-pathogen response and support the aquaculture effort, genome and proteome reference maps moving beyond simple sequence information of cultivated fish species will accelerate research and translation of quality products for food industries. Towards this end, we have performed an extensive proteomics-based investigation of Labeo rohita, one of the economically important fish species produced in world aquaculture. Deep proteomic profiling of 17 histologically normal tissues, plasma and embryo provided mass-spectrometric evidence for 6015 high confident canonical proteins at 1% false discovery rate. Tissue enriched expression of several biologically important proteins was validated using targeted proteomics with high quantitative accuracy. We characterised the global post translational modifications (PTMs) in terms of acetylation (n-terminus and lysine), methylation (n-terminus, lysine and arginine) and phosphorylation (serine, threonine and tyrosine) to present a comprehensive proteome resource. An interactive web-based portal was developed to support the Labeo rohita PeptideAtlas, (***), a unique community resource for mass spectrometry-based peptide/protein evidence in fish. This draft proteome map of Labeo rohita would advance basic and applied research in aquaculture to meet the most critical challenge of providing food and nutritional security to an increasing world population. © 2021, CC BY.

Integral Sliding Mode Based Composite Nonlinear Feedback control For Descriptor systems

This paper introduces an Integral Sliding Mode (ISM) based Composite Nonlinear Feedback (CNF) controller for linear descriptor systems. CNF controllers are well known for guaranteeing good transient performance, while tracking. But, the CNF controllers developed so far for the descriptor systems are not robust to disturbances. Sliding mode controllers, on the other hand, are well known for its matched disturbance rejection capabilities. Hence, to improve the robustness of the CNF controllers for descriptor systems an ISM based approach is been used here so that robustness in presence of matched disturbances is guaranteed but at the same time inherent good transient performance capability of CNF controlled system is retained. Simulation results are also shown at the end to ascertain the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2018

Many electric utilities offer peak rebate programs, which allow them to call for load curtailment from participating consumers but the actual curtailment is voluntary. In this case, consumers may be tempted to “free-ride” on the compliance of other participants. Care should be taken in designing an appropriate incentive structure that is both, attractive enough to induce the desired curtailment, but not too attractive to induce excessive participation. This paper casts the consumer participation problem in DR as a game and analyzes its equilibrium to ascertain the nature of consumer response. We provide insights on the role of incentives and number of consumers called for curtailment, in inducing the desired curtailment.

Current trends in autonomous vehicles and their applications indicates an increasing need in positioning at low battery and compute cost. Lidars provide accurate localization at the cost of high compute and power consumption which could be detrimental for drones. Modern requirements for autonomous drones such as No-Permit-No-Takeoff (NPNT) and applications restricting drones to a corridor require the infrastructure to constantly determine the location of the drone. Ultra Wide Band Radios (UWB) fulfill such requirements and offer high precision localization and fast position update rates at a fraction of the cost and battery consumption as compared to lidars and also have greater network availability than GPS in a dense forested campus or an indoor setting. We present in this paper a novel protocol and technique to localize a drone for such applications using a Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) approach. This further increases the position update rates without sacrificing on accuracy and compare it to traditional methods. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Statistical economies of scale in battery sharing

The goal of this paper is to shed light on the statistical economies of scale achievable from sharing of storage between renewable generators. We conduct an extensive study using real world wind data from a grid of equispaced wind generators sharing a common battery. We assume each generator is contracted to meet a certain demand profile to a prescribed level of reliability. We find that the statistical diversity in wind generation across different locations yields useful economies of scale once the grid spacing exceeds 200 km. When the grid spacing exceeds 500 km, we find that the economies grow dramatically: The shared battery size becomes insensitive to the number of participating generators. This means that the generators can access a common, shared battery and collectively achieve the same reliability they would have, had each of them had the entire battery to themselves. To provide a rigourous foundation for this remarkable observation, we propose a mathematical model that demonstrates this phenomenon, assuming that the net generation (generation minus demand) processes associated with the generators are statistically independent. The result is derived by characterizing the large deviations exponent of the loss of load probability with increasing battery size, and showing that this exponent is invariant with the number of generators. Lyapunov-like functions for attitude control via feedback integrators

The notion of feedback integrators permits Euclidean integration schemes for dynamical systems evolving on manifolds. Here, a constructive Lyapunov function for the attitude dynamics embedded in an ambient Euclidean space has been proposed. We then combine the notion of feedback integrators with the proposed Lyapunov function to obtain a feedback law for the attitude control system. The combination of the two techniques yields a domain of attraction for the closed loop dynamics, where earlier contributions were based on linearization ideas. Further, the analysis and synthesis of the feedback scheme is carried out entirely in Euclidean space. The proposed scheme is also shown to be robust to numerical errors. Integral control of stable nonlinear systems based on singular perturbations ⁎

One of the main issues related to integral control is windup, which occurs when, possibly due to a fault, the input signal u of the plant reaches a value outside the allowed input range U. This paper presents an integral controller with anti-windup, called saturating integrator, for a single-input single-output nonlinear plant having a curve of locally exponentially stable equilibrium points that correspond to constant inputs in U. A closed-loop system is formed by connecting the saturating integrator in feedback with the plant. The control objective is to make the output signal y of the plant track a constant reference r, while not allowing its input signal u to leave U. Using singular perturbation methods, we prove that, under reasonable assumptions, the equilibrium point of the closed-loop system is exponentially stable, with a “large” region of attraction. Moreover, when the state of the closed-loop system converges to this equilibrium point, then the tracking error tends to zero. A step-by-step procedure is presented to perform the closed-loop stability analysis, by finding separately a Lyapunov function for the reduced (slow) model and a Lyapunov function for the boundary-layer (fast) system. Afterwards, a Lyapunov function for the closed-loop system is built as a convex combination of the two previous ones, and an upper bound on the controller gain is found such that closed-loop stability is guaranteed. Finally, we show that if certain stronger conditions hold, then the domain of attraction of the stable equilibrium point of the closed-loop system can be made large by choosing a small controller gain.
