Connecting the Unconnected or under-connected (CTU) is the holy grail of transforming the lives of over 3 billion people around the globe with wireless Internet who are yet to experience its value in multiple ways. If this could be accomplished, its impact on the society would be enormous. This white paper from the IEEE Future Networks CTU Working Group endeavors to highlight the need to consider the CTU requirements in 5G and B5G networks in the standardization process, in the development of the use cases, and affordable solutions. In its Vision 2030 SDG (Sustainability Development Goals) the United Nations has proclaimed access to Internet as basic human right and has said that these goals cannot be achieved without affordable access to Internet by everyone on this planet. While there are numerous projects and initiatives ongoing around the world, these are fragmented and lack the critical mass and coordination to be able to impact the future standards, product development, and cost of deployment otherwise achievable by volume. Although difficult to pin down, to define a threshold for basic connectivity for all is important. But it would need to be flexible to adapt to changing times. It is the goal of the CTU group to create an open platform where the experts can bring their ideas, solutions, and potentially collaborate to create large global projects and influence the network service providers, manufacturers and their governments. This white paper defines the CTU working group's charter, scope, and provides a brief overview of the relevant stakeholders and linkages between them. Then the paper goes into the current status of the CTU landscape and where we want to reach to accomplish the vision of connecting everybody, especially those living in rural and remote areas. We present the various standards and industry fora and how they are interlinked. While technologies are available today, they need to be customized and optimized at the systems level to bring down

Sizing storage for reliable renewable integration: A large deviations approach

The inherent intermittency of wind and solar generation presents a significant challenge as we seek to increase the penetration of renewable generation in the power grid. Increasingly, energy storage is being deployed alongside renewable generation to counter this intermittency. However, a formal characterization of the reliability of renewable generators bundled with storage is lacking in the literature. The present paper seeks to fill this gap. We use a Markov modulated fluid queue to model the loss of load probability (LOLP) associated with a renewable generator bundled with a battery, serving an uncertain demand process. Further, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of the LOLP as the battery size scales to infinity. Our results shed light on the fundamental limits of reliability achievable, and also guide the sizing of the storage required in order to meet a given reliability target. Mobile base with omnidirectional wheels have the advantage of unrestricted maneuverability. We investigate the use of spherical robots as omnidirectional wheels. A three link assembly with snap joint for each robot is designed. Each robot is independently actuated. In order for the three robots to coordinate for mobile robot, the kinematic model for orienting and commanding the velocities of these actuation is developed. Experiments are performed with PI controller for demonstrating the applications of developed mobile base with three spherical robots. With the experimental results on waypoint navigation and circular path following, the mobile base is shown to have unrestricted maneuverability in all the directions.

We consider the stabilization problem for PDEODE cascade interconnections in which the input is applied to the PDE system, whose output drives the ODE system. The PDE system is stable, while the ODE system is unstable. In the literature, this problem has been solved for specific nontrivial examples of such interconnections using the backstepping approach. In contrast, in the present work we consider this problem in a unified abstract setting for all PDEs that are regular linear systems. In our approach, using a state transformation obtained by solving a Sylvester equation with unbounded operators, we first diagonalize the interconnection. Then by solving a finite-dimensional stabilization problem, we get a stabilizing controller for the interconnection. We illustrate our approach using an example in which the ODE is an unstable scalar system and the PDE is the 1D diffusion equation.

The Efficiency of Generalized Nash and Variational Equilibria

Shared-constraint games are noncooperative N -player games where players are coupled through a common coupling constraint. It is known that such games admit two kinds of equilibria – generalized Nash equilibria (GNE) and variational equilibria (VE) – with two different economic interpretations. We consider such games in the context of resource allocation, where players move simultaneously to decide portions of the resource they can consume under a coupling constraint that the sum of the portions they demand be no more than the capacity of the resource. We clarify the worst case and best case efficiency of these kinds of equilibria over all games in a class. We find that the worst case efficiency of both solution concepts in zero and the best case efficiency is unity. Moreover, we characterize the subclass of games where all VE are efficient and show that even in this subclass but the worst case efficiency of GNE is zero. In this article we present the discrete-Time isoholonomic problem of the planar Purcell s swimmer and solve it using the Discrete-Time Pontryagin maximum principle. The 3-link Purcell s swimmer is a locomotion system moving in a low Reynolds number environment. The kinematics of the system evolves on a principal fiber bundle. A structure preserving discrete-Time kinematic model of the system is obtained in terms of the local form of a discrete connection. An adapted version of the Discrete Maximum Principle on matrix Lie groups is then employed to come up with the necessary optimality conditions for an optimal state transfer while minimizing the control effort. These necessary conditions appear as a two-point boundary value problem and are solved using a numerical technique. Results from numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the algorithm. In this paper, we focus on the problem of compositional synthesis of controllers enforcing signal temporal logic (STL) tasks over a class of continuous-time nonlinear interconnected systems. By leveraging the idea of funnel-based control, we show that a fragment of STL specifications can be formulated as assume-guarantee contracts. A new concept of contract satisfaction is then defined to establish our compositionality result, which allows us to guarantee the satisfaction of a global contract by the interconnected system when all subsystems satisfy their local contracts. Based on this compositional framework, we then design closed-form continuous-time feedback controllers to enforce local contracts over subsystems in a decentralized manner. This article treats optimal sparse control problems with multiple constraints defined at intermediate points of the time domain. For such problems with intermediate constraints, we first establish a new Pontryagin maximum principle that provides first order necessary conditions for optimality in such problems. Then we announce and employ a new numerical algorithm to arrive at, in a computationally tractable fashion, optimal state-action trajectories from the necessary conditions given by our maximum principle. Most of the power sources of mechanical systems can only deliver limited amount of power. Due to this insufficiency of power, often the system fails to achieve a smooth passage through resonance. For example, a non-ideal DC motor driven vibrating system with viscous damping often gets stuck near resonance speed of the system as a large amount of supplied power is utilized to oscillate the system which causes a scarcity of power for the motor speed to go past the resonance condition. However, most of the available power can be used to rotate the motor shaft if somehow the oscillating motion is arrested or minimized. In this paper, a study of a non-ideal DC motor driven mechanical system with dry friction is presented. The response of the system under stick phase, as given by the Karnopp model of friction is found and subsequently, a nonslip operating condition is obtained analytically. With the help of numerical results, the obtained nonslip condition is verified for different voltage inputs. A smooth variation of rotational speed of the motor shaft is numerically achieved without being affected by the Sommerfeld Effect. Copyright © 2019 ASME.
