The problem of scheduling a shared control channel between several systems controlled from a remote location is studied in this work. control scheduling and design is addressed via an approach based on optimally sparse control design. Specifically, for a linear control system we propose a sparse Mayer problem with a special action set to codify controls that are active for the least duration and multiplex between the control systems. The ensuing problem requires a non-smooth cost function, necessitating the application of a non-smooth Pontryagin maximum principle and shooting methods based on Newton's root finding technique to arrive at the optimal control trajectories. Our results are illustrated on a test example to verify their efficacy.

Consensus analysis of systems with time-varying interactions : An event-triggered approach

We present consensus analysis of systems with single integrator dynamics interacting via time-varying graphs under the event-triggered control paradigm. Event-triggered control sparsifies the control applied, thus reducing the control effort expended. Initially, we consider a multi-agent system with persistently exciting interactions and study the behaviour under the application of event-triggered control with two types of trigger functions- static and dynamic trigger. We show that while in the case of static trigger, the edge-states converge to a ball around the origin, the dynamic trigger function forces the states to reach consensus exponentially. Finally, we extend these results to a more general setting where we consider switching topologies. We show that similar results can be obtained for agents interacting via switching topologies and validate our results by means of simulations. © 2017

Natural circulation steam boilers are extensively used in process and power plant industries. Availability and performance of these boilers are critical for respective process/power plants and hence are typically designed and controlled conservatively. Currently with increased focus on flexibility and cost efficient performance, advance control and optimization methods and algorithms are explored both in academia and industrial research. However, majority of these studies are limited to simulation-based, with almost zero operational data to validate the improvement based on the advancement in controls technology. Goal of our work is to bridge this gap by providing a unique innovative laboratory scale boiler setup for controls research and education. This setup is designed in such a way to mimic real-world boiler dynamics from a system and controls perspective. This setup is also expected to improve overall process control education process because of the hands-on experience on modeling, system identification, control design and implementation on an equipment which is close to real world application. © 2017

Generic instruction based testing methods do not always give good fault coverage for the complex units like Forwarding unit. Hence it becomes important to carefully craft the test which are best for different parts of these units. In this paper we have identified two different test generation methods for different sections of the forwarding unit, namely muxes and comparators which offers better coverage independently: template based test instruction generation and test instruction generation from constrained test vectors. A wrapper designed using the functional constraints of the forwarding unit, is used for test generation. Both methods combined delivers fault coverage of 97.33%. A detailed analysis of the non-detected faults revealed the fact that they cannot be tested using the instruction set of the processor (MIPS 5-stage pipelined processor). This proves that the proposed method achieved 100% functional coverage for stuck-at faults in the forwarding unit. © 2017 IEEE.

Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. High-speed motors rotating at speeds above 10,000 rpm are finding many applications nowadays. High efficiency and reliability are demanded by the applications like centrifugal compressors, pumps, machine tools, centrifuges, drills and aerospace. This paper presents the analysis and comparison of a radial-and axial-flux permanent magnet synchronous motors for high-speed, low-power applications. Two radial flux configurations and one axial flux motor are considered for the study. Various challenges in the electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal analysis of these motors are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of each topology are identified. 3-D finite element analysis is performed for the multiphysics study of the motors and the simulation results are presented.

A novel algorithm to use line of sight (LOS) measurements for relative position, attitude and angular rate estimation for autonomous spacecraft navigation is developed. Traditional relative attitude navigation is based on gyro measurements from the spacecrafts in formation for estimating angular rates. But it requires information exchange between the two spacecrafts and continuous availability of gyro data. The loss of gyro data can result in high propagation errors. The approach presented here can determine relative angular velocity in the event of gyro failures or communication delays. Previously, an algorithm for spacecraft angular rate estimation for star tracker based attitude determination had been proposed. In this paper, this algorithm is extended to estimate relative angular rates from the LOS measurements without assuming any on-board star tracker or gyros. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used here to estimate the relative motion. The state of the EKF consists of relative quaternion, angular velocity, position and velocity. The dynamic model of the relative motion is based on generalized Clohessy and Wiltshire equations. The angular acceleration of the follower spacecraft is modeled by Gaussian white noise. This is done for estimating relative angular rates. Numerical simulations are carried out to analyze the performance of this algorithm.

We present a device to continuously focus microparticles in a liquid-filled open channel subjected to lateral vibration at frequencies of the order of 10 Hz. The vibration generates a capillary wave at the liquid-air interface. This capillary wave leads to a net motion of microparticles over multiple cycles, causing collection under the displacement nodes of the capillary wave. These accumulated particles are observed as a concentrated stream in the presence of a continuous flow along the open channel, which means that the channel can be designed such that the focused particle stream exits through one outlet, while the filtrate is removed via interspaced outlets on each side of the particle stream. A numerical model is proposed, which superimposes the periodic flow field due to the capillary wave and the inlet-induced transverse flow field between the inlet and the outlet. The model is utilized to predict the smallest distance from the inlet at which the focused stream of particles is obtained, termed here the collection length. In addition, experiments are performed for different channel and inlet sizes, vibration actuation amplitudes, flow rates, and particle sizes. By considering the design factors extracted from the modeling data, we demonstrate that the resulting device is capable of continuous particle collection down to 1μm diameter, at flow rates of up to 1.2 ml/min.

Hilbert’s Space-filling Curve for Regions with Holes

— The paper presents a systematic strategy for implementing Hilbert’s space filling curve for use in online exploration tasks and addresses its application in scenarios wherein the space to be searched obstacles (or holes) whose locations are not known a priori. Using the self-similarity and locality preserving properties of Hilbert’s space filling curve, a set of evasive maneuvers are prescribed and characterized for online implementation. Application of these maneuvers in the case of non-uniform coverage of spaces and for obstacles of varying sizes is also presented. Geometric tracking control for a nonholonomic system: a spherical robot

This paper presents tracking control laws for two different objectives of a nonholonomic system - a spherical robot - using a geometric approach. The first control law addresses orientation tracking using a modified trace potential function. The second law addresses contact position tracking using a right transport map for the angular velocity error. A special case of this is position and reduced orientation stabilization. Both control laws are coordinate free. The performance of the feedback control laws are demonstrated through simulations. © 2016
