Linear controller design of differential algebraic equations (DAE) systems developed by is extended to nonlinear systems. This methodology is applied to an index-2 two phase reactor to arrive at a 2 /spl times/ 2 transfer function matrix. A PI controller derived using Ziegler-Nichols and BLT methods is found to work well. Considering the advantages, this method should belong to the toolkit of control engineers.

In this paper we present a new algorithm for discrete sliding mode control of linear multivariable systems using fast output sampling feedback. Here we make use of a single switching surface regardless of the number of inputs. The main contribution of this work is that instead of using the system states, the output samples are used for designing the controller. Numerical example demonstrates the design technique.

We demonstrate CHISEL programming operation of fully scaled high-density flash EEPROMs. Single cell program and erase characteristics show reliable operation in terms of programming disturbs and cycling induced degradation. Program and erase operation of high-density arrays show a unique post-erase operation, tight threshold voltage distribution and over 10 years of data retention even after 105 program/erase cycles. Results are presented showing the feasibility of CHISEL programming operation for deeply scaled high-density flash EEPROMs.

In this paper we consider the synthesis of a point-to-point control law for a three degrees of freedom planar PPR underactuated manipulator moving in a horizontal plane. We apply the results of [1] where a discontinuous feedback controller construction for a special class of underactuated systems is presented. By using a coordinate transformation provided by [2] we transform the system into chained form which makes it suitable for the application of the discontinuous control law. Simulation results are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller.

We consider a variant of the time-optimal control of the acrobot and term it sub time-optimal. By exploiting the partially linearized structure obtained through a feedback linearization technique, we swing up the first link to the vertically upright position in optimal time and then stabilize the second link around its vertical equilibrium position. Rate constraints are imposed on the actuator and certain interesting facts of such an approach are illustrated. Along the way we also prove the “normal” property of the time-optimal control problem for the acrobot.
