This paper describes the efforts towards the design of a robust controller for the IRS-P2 (indian Remote Sensing Satellite) satellite. The IRS-P2 is used for the purpose of imaging the earth. Uncertainties in the dynamics and severe constraints on the allowable rates of attitude angles, motivated a multivariable robust control approach to the problem. © 1998 AACC.

Presents the solution to an industrial challenge problem using neural networks. The control problem statement is authored by Chylla and Haase (1993). The objective is to maintain reaction temperature of a semibatch polymerization reactor at a set point inspite of a variety of conditions ranging from raw material impurity, product variety, repeated batching and varying ambient temperature. Although the reactor configuration and control requirements appear simple, the realities of the problem make it a challenging problem to tackle. The controller design methodology is based on process inverse dynamics modelling. The learning database for the controller training is generated in an open loop fashion and training of the network is carried out off-line by considering the future plant outputs as the reference set points. The learning procedure is not goal directed in that an explicit goal is not defined. This paper follows the design of the controller.

We consider design of stabilizing controller for linear structured uncertain discrete two-time-scale system which can be represented by the interval matrix representation. The slow and fast uncertain subsystems are obtained using interval arithmetic. It is shown that a state feedback and output feedback control law designed to stabilize the slow uncertain subsystem will stabilize the original full order system, provided that fast uncertain subsystem is asymptotically stable. The results obtained are illustrated by a numerical example.

In this paper, the problem of control design for discrete two-time-scale systems using piecewise constant periodic output feedback is considered. The discrete two-time-scale system is decomposed into a slow and fast subsystem and then a composite controller is designed which provides an output injection gain. The output injection gain has been used to compute periodic output feedback. The method is illustrated by a numerical example.

The paper presents the design of a linear observer for estimation of concentrations of xenon, iodine, and delayed neutron precursors in different regions of a large pressurized heavy water reactor, from measurement of zonal power levels. The nuclear reactor is described by a 56/sup th/ order nonlinear model. The model is linearized around the rated reactor power. The control law requires the feedback of 56 states while only 14 are measured, thereby necessitating a 42/sup nd/ order observer. By redefining the state and control variables, the problem of designing the observer of order 42 is decomposed into design problems of fourteen observers of order 3 each, which is a comparatively much simpler task. The performance of the observer has been investigated by simulation.

The problem of controller design for higher order system via reduced model is investigated. The paper describes a technique for designing a stabilizing controller for the stable higher order system via its reduced order model. The method uses the parametrization of all compensators that stabilize a given plant. It is shown that the compensator which is obtained from reduced model not only stabilizes the reduced model but also the higher order system. The developed method is illustrated with a numerical example.

Robust feedback synthesis for nonlinear integrodifferential equation models using generalized describing functions

We propose a technique for synthesizing robust feedback systems for plants described by nonlinear integro-differential equations (NIDE) with considerable coefficient uncertainties. The technique is based on the concept of generalized frequency response functions (GFRF), and exploits recent results that enable ready derivation of these from the NIDE description of the plant. A powerful synthesis procedure that combines the GFRF and quantitative feedback theory (QFT) technique is given. The proposed procedure has several advantages over the existing nonlinear QFT methods. A nonlinear chemical reactor example is solved using the procedure, and is found to yield satisfactory results. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

The problem of finding a unit in H/sub /spl infin// i.e., an H/sub /spl infin// function the inverse of which is also H/sub /spl infin//, which interpolates to given points in the right-half plane has important applications in a number of feedback stabilization problems, i.e., strong stabilization (stabilization by a stable compensator) and simultaneous stabilization (finding a common fixed compensator which stabilizes a finite set of possible plants). The present paper gives an overview of the interpolation theory and some remarks observed with different mappings used in literature to find a unit in H/sub /spl infin//. A new algorithm is also presented to construct a unit in H/sub /spl infin//.
