This paper presents a neurobiology and cognitive psychology inspired model, implemented using a neural-network-like parallel computational strategy. The goal of the model is to show how a visual cortex inspired system can control camera alignment using a given camera hardware setup, in a similar way to the brain's controlling eye movements. The system (computational model and camera hardware) are integrated into an experimental environment, the Intelligent Space, a room of ubiquitous computing. The intelligent space is based on several Distributed Intelligent Network Devices (DIND). A DIND has a sensor input, integrated intelligence and a communication interface. The model presented in this paper serves as the integrated intelligence component of a particular DIND. The proposed model implemented in a parallel hardware performs real time operation.

This paper addresses the problem of designing the steady-state behavior of a system composed of a set of repetitive processes competing for access to shared resources. Its objective is to provide a framework allowing to prototype a robust distributed control policy as a function of the characteristics of the component processes and dispatching rules involved. The considered problem resolution consists in finding a schedule with no process waiting for access to the shared resources and wherefore leading to controls not requiring resource conflict resolution. The problem is formulated as a task of prototyping of conditions sufficient for existence of a waiting-free n-process execution. This paper studies the relation between conservation laws and symmetries from the point of view of port-representation. First, the formal structure of conservation laws is defined by the field port-Lagrangian system for such symmetries. Next, it is shown that a variational complex notation naturally defines the system decomposition that extracts a self-adjoint subsystem from a non-self-adjoint system. Then, the above discussion is extended to one of non-trivial symmetries, a variational symmetry. Since the necessary and sufficient condition of the variational symmetry is a self-adjointness, we apply the decomposition given by the previous section to non-self-adjoint systems. The paper focuses on a selected class of decision problems related with the production flow planning in SMEs, particularly in new production orders. Verification of orders gives a possibility to evaluate whether resources capacity of a manufacturer is balanced with the orderer's requirements. The class of decision problems under analysis is included in the scope of organizational production preparation and can be naturally determined by available CLP (constraint logic programming) tools. The approach proposed in the paper is based on establishment of an interface which facilitates its task oriented use. The system has been presented on the basis of a sample order execution in a manufacturer's company (Archimedes S.A.).

In this paper, we present a real-time stereo vision based pose and motion estimation system that will be used for landing an unmanned helicopter on a moving target such as a ship deck. The vision algorithm mainly consists of a feature extraction task and a pose and motion estimation task. The 2D planer target with regular features defined can significantly simplify the feature extraction task such as corner detection and feature points matching. To effectively estimate the distance between the camera carrier and target a stereo camera system is applied. By means of sub-pixel corner location the precisions of pose estimation and relative motion detection can be improved. We present results from semi-physical simulation which show that our vision algorithm is accurate and robust. The methodology provides an effective subsystem for the development of autonomous robot helicopter that will land on a given target under the guide of vision.

While current studies on complex networks focus on systems that change relatively slowly in time, the structure of the most visited regions of the web is altered at the time scale from hours to days. Here we investigate the dynamics of visitation of a major news portal, representing the prototype for such a rapidly evolving network. The nodes of the network can be classified into stable nodes, which form the time-independent skeleton of the portal, and news documents. The visitations of the two node classes are markedly different, the skeleton acquiring visits at a constant rate, while a news document’s visitation peaks after a few hours. We find that the visitation pattern of a news document decays as a power law, in contrast with the exponential prediction provided by simple models of site visitation. This is rooted in the inhomogeneous nature of the browsing pattern characterizing individual users: the time interval between consecutive visits by the same user to the site follows a power-law distribution, in contrast to the exponential expected for Poisson processes. We show that the exponent characterizing the individual user’s browsing patterns determines the power-law decay in a document’s visitation. Finally, our results document the fleeting quality of news and events: while fifteen minutes of fame is still an exaggeration in the online media, we find that access to most news items significantly decays after 36hours of posting.
