This paper attempts to look at the fundamental problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in nonlinear systems. Using the idea of input reconstruction by means of dynamic inversion the authors first discuss the properties of input (or fault) observability in linear systems. The extension of the results to nonlinear systems as well as the mathematical conditions of the calculation of the inverse system, which provides the inverse in finite algorithmic steps, are given. The applicability of the inversion process to fault reconstruction in nonlinear systems is demonstrated.

A simple nonlinear controller for a low-power gas turbine based on direct passivation is proposed in this paper. It uses a nonlinear state space model of the gas turbine in input-affine form based on first engineering principles. It is found by standard nonlinear analysis that the developed model is reachable and observable in the whole application domain and stable in a small neighborhood of an operating point. Accordingly, the control aim is to guarantee the asymptotic stability of every operating points in the whole application domain and to provide suitable disturbance rejection. The proposed nonlinear controller is based on a prescribed quadratic Lyapunov-function and it is able to solve the protection of the gas turbine. The robustness of the closed-loop system with respect to the time-varying parameters is also investigated.

The emulated digital architecture (CASTLE) is accurate but slower than the analog CNN-UMs. It is generally disadvantageous especially if transient computing is critical. The operation speed of the emulated digital implementations, namely CASTLE, can be increased significantly using the pipeline technique. This solution is analyzed with respect to area, time, etc. These arithmetic cores were tested and simulated using a VIRTEX FPGA development system.

A lumped parameter dynamic model of a single protection valve with electronic actuation in a brake system based on first engineering principles is presented in this paper for control design purposes. The model is developed in an index-1 differential-algebraic equation (DAE) form, and it is capable of describing the hybrid behaviour of the protection valve. The DAE model is transformed into its standard nonlinear input-affine state-space model form, which will be used for control design purposes. The developed model has been verified by simulation studies, where it is shown that it is capable to describe the dynamic behavior of the examined protection valve.

Newly emerging problems require high speed decision making based on visual perception of the environment. A project was set up to construct an intelligent agent like self-contained device that is capable to act in real-time and show collaborative behavior. Giving the hardware basis for decisions to be made a cellular nonlinear network CNN (Chua and Yang, 1988) chip implementation's optical input is used in combination with the cooperative devices' information that is received via binary ports and serial ports. The proposed design is a self-contained compact device that is prepared to operate stand-alone for up to 10 hours running on medium sized batteries while doing measurements, logging and collaborating with its environment via parallel port (for image transfer), RS-232 port (using modbus, profibus, PPP protocols) and binary I/O-s. Intelligent power module, optical isolation, watch dog capability is also considered.

Given an expansion of a dynamical system in terms of a generalized orthonormal (Hambo) basis, the problem of realizing a state-space model of minimal McMillan degree such that its first N expansion coefficients match the given ones is addressed and solved. For the solution use is made of the properties of the Hambo operator transform theory. The resulting realization algorithms can be applied in an exact and approximative sense and can also be applied to solve a related interpolation problem.

Maintenance categories differ too much in order to be covered by one and the same generic process model. Too general process models do not give enough guidance when building process models and when measuring processes. They often invite subjectivity and imprecision. The authors suggest a detailed taxonomy of the activities for one of the processes essential within corrective maintenance: Problem Management Process. Together with other taxonomies of the processes inherent within corrective maintenance, this taxonomy should constitute a platform for defining corrective maintenance process models and an interim reference model for future measurements of corrective software maintenance.
