Due to global and political influence, resilient and versatile production systems are unavoidable. Based on existing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems there is a growing need for a consistent communication between machines and product design to enable integrated product and production process design. Core aspects are integrating the product design information directly into the production equipment and their feedback into the product design as well as into other phases of the product creation and usage. Therefore, a generalized production description language as well as an architecture for the digital integrated product design and production need to be developed. This paper presents the first results of a use case in the automotive industry. The approach of developing the functional architecture is shown. Several feedback to X approaches were researched in literature and analyzed regarding functional requirements for integration in the developed architecture. The results are the main basis for further implementation within the automotive production. Moreover, the main challenges and next steps are discussed. © 2024 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Gaia-X is an initiative to develop the next generation of a secure and federated European data infrastructure to promote digital sovereignty for data exchange to fuel innovations. This paper introduces the basics of Gaia-X, in particular the mobility domain, followed by the federated system and its standards. In addition, a research methodology is presented to help conceptualize and derive requirements for service offerings on a Gaia-X-based data space. This is elaborated with a use case from the project "GAIA-X4 AMS" (Gaia-X4-Advanced Mobility Services), which reflects implementation in Gaia-X ecosystems and its added value. © 2023 29th Annual Americas Conference on Information systems, AMCIS 2023. Using traditional benchmarking methods on the environmental impact of enterprises, carbon benchmarking aims to enable organizations to compare their individual carbon footprint with their peers. The insights gathered during that process allows enterprises to identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions about their carbon emissions using best practices from their industry section. This paper presents a systematic study of carbon benchmarking approaches and methodologies for the assessment, performance comparison and improvement of corporate greenhouse gas emissions. In a first step, a series of robust criteria are defined in order to respond to the specific requirements of effective carbon benchmarking, aiming for comparable and reliable results. Secondly, existing frameworks and methodologies for the assessment and performance comparison of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are explored through a systematic literature review. In a last step, the approaches identified are compared and evaluated by comparison group and scope. In this context, potential gaps are identified and further need for research in the field of corporate GHG reduction methods and approaches revealed. © 2023 IEEE.

In automated production industries, qualified maintenance is important. Planning and executing complex practical maintenance training scenarios on real machines can be expensive. To reduce cost, virtual training simulations in Virtual Reality (VR) are slowly being established in the virtual commissioning sector, but implementation times can be long and costly when each new training scenario needs to be implemented manually. This paper describes the outcome of a three-year research project, which addressed an automated generation of gamified maintenance training in VR based on existing virtual commissioning scenarios instead of manually configuring the machine logic on an example in the automotive industry. With the project partners from the automotive and gaming industry, a demonstrator was created. The result is a transdisciplinary setup guide for three different user types: the commissioner, the trainer, and the trainee. The users are supported with a combination of automated functions and included descriptions to utilize VR without being VR experts. The first user, the commissioner, can generate a VR scene from virtual commissioning and connects them so that the real machine behavior of the virtual Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Numerical Control (NC) can be used in VR over the virtual Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) like touchscreens, buttons, and other machine parts. The trainer can configure training in this virtual commissioning scene for the maintenance trainee to use for virtual machine training. The demonstrator received positive feedback from key users of the automotive industry and should be tested for their training in the next steps. © 2023 The Authors.

Product and service creation requires the interdisciplinary collaboration of different stakeholders. In virtual product and service creation these stakeholders generate models and data to describe the product or service over their entire life cycle. For a reliant product creation and optimization, these models and data need to be consistent through all disciplines and life cycle phases. In this publication, a solution-independent functional architecture to foster the digital continuity across the involved disciplines and life cycle phases is described. To achieve it, existing approaches in literature are evaluated and requirements and desired capabilities extracted. An reduced form of the Architecture Analysis & design Integrated Approach (ARCADIA) is used to describe a functional architecture. Consecutively, existing solutions are mapped to the architecture and evaluated for compliance. © 2023 IEEE.

A Digital Twin (DT) is a virtual replica of a product or product-service system, which can be used to provide transparency of a product's sustainability and to positively influence the ecological impact throughout its lifecycle by means of intelligent data analytics. This paper identifies current sustainability-focused application scenarios of DTs in the manufacturing industry and outlines the results of a systematic literature review (SLR). The identification of the state-of-the-art and the assessment of current DT concepts with regard to the addressed product lifecycle phases, technological maturity and sustainability scope point towards key directions to guide future research. © 2023 The Authors. Considering the concept of a Circular Economy, which entails several life cycles of, e.g., vehicles, their components, and materials, it is important to investigate how the respective Digital Twins are managed over the lifecycle of their physical assets. This publication presents and compares three approaches for managing Digital Twins in industrial use cases. For the aggregation of these approaches, a user-centered design approach has been used in the research project Catena-X which focuses on the automotive industry. The results are analyzed qualitatively based on aspects such as data ownership and data sovereignty. It was identified, that all three approaches have limitations and benefits which make them useful in different scenarios. An overview of their strengths and weaknesses is presented to select an appropriate approach In similar setups. The results described in this publication can be used to select the best update approach in data spaces where multiple stakeholders are able to update information on a single asset. © 2025 The Authors.

The application of ultrasonic superposition is utilized in industrial manufacturing to enhance the chip formation mechanisms, particularly when machining hard-to-machine materials. The Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Management (IWF) systematically investigates the interactions between tool and workpiece during ultrasonic-assisted grinding of high-performance ceramics. To gain an in-depth understanding of the microscopic engagement conditions, these conditions are analyzed by simulation. For this purpose, a Python simulation tool based on a geometrical-kinematic modeling approach was developed to analyze the ultrasonic-assisted circumferential longitudinal grinding process. It was demonstrated that ultrasonic assistance leads to smaller and more uniform chip thicknesses which reduce grinding forces and minimizes tool wear. Also, it promotes brittle chip formation mechanisms and improves the efficiency of the grinding process compared to conventional machining. For further investigation, the simulation model was adapted to the transverse face grinding process. In this context, not only the circumferential surface but also the face surface of the grinding tool is engaged with the workpiece. Additionally, the penetration of the workpiece is no longer tangential with the rotational movement but perpendicular to the tool movement. Analogous to the results of the analysis of the circumferential longitudinal grinding process, the influences of ultrasonic excitation on the engagement conditions, particularly the resulting chip thickness and surface topography for the adapted process kinematics were determined and are presented in this paper. © 2025 The Author(s).

The phenomenon of solidification cracking has been the subject of numerous research projects over the years. Great efforts have been made to understand the fundamentals of hot cracking. It is generally agreed that solidification cracks form in the solidification range between the liquidus and solidus temperatures under the combination of thermal, metallurgical and mechanical factors. There is still a need to determine the time-resolved strain distribution in the crack-sensitive region in order to analyse the local critical conditions for solidification cracking phenomena. This was a strong motivation for the development of a measurement system used in this study to estimate the local strains and strain rates in the zone where the solidification crack is expected to occur. The laser beam welding experiments were conducted using the Controlled-Tensile-Weldability test (CTW test) to apply an external strain condition during welding to generate solidification cracks. The CTW test is a test method for investigating the susceptibility of laser-welded joints to solidification cracking, in which the sample can be subjected to a defined strain at a defined strain rate during welding. In combination with experimental investigations, numerical simulations provide spatially detailed and time-dependent information about the strain development during the welding process, especially regarding the critical conditions for solidification cracking. Therefore, this tool was also used in the present study to evaluate the accuracy of measurement methods and to estimate experimentally derived values and their concrete influence on the formation of solidification cracks. By integrating experimental methods and numerical simulations, this study investigates the spatially resolved and temporally changing development of strain during welding, with a particular focus on the critical conditions that lead to the formation of solidification cracks. Brushing with bonded abrasives is a finishing process mainly used for deburring, edge rounding, and surface roughness reduction. The brushing tools consist of flexible polymer filaments embedded with abrasive grains, allowing them to adapt to complex workpiece shapes. However, interactions between filaments lead to complex motion, chipping, and wear behaviors, making it difficult to predict work results. The discrete element method (DEM) has been shown to be effective in simulating process forces, contact areas, and filament interactions on flat workpieces. Consequently, this article focuses on processing geometrically complex workpieces, particularly additively manufactured turbine fan blades (Ni-Cr-Co), using round brushes with bonded silicon carbide. First, a vectorized iterative method is introduced to generate artificial filament patterns, enhancing DEM simulation accuracy compared to state-of-the-art filament pattern models. Subsequently, dry brushing experiments are carried out on a fan blade feature demonstrator, aiming to achieve homogeneous roughness reduction. The qualitative analysis of the contact surface suggests that results from DEM simulations can reduce the need for costly technological investigations and prototypes. © 2025 The Author(s).
